Dr. Acula

This article says that he started 53 games so he must have been the starter all 4 years.  Never knew.  You learn something new everyday!

SI's Pete Thamel listed Jason Candle as 1 of his 20 guys to watch for job openings after this season:

Jason Candle, Toledo
Candle showed impressive maturity in his coaching debut last year by remaining in the press box to call plays during Toledo's upset of Temple in the Boca Raton Bowl. (Most coaches would have gone to the sideline, but Candle didn't want to disrupt the team.) The Rockets return so much talent on offense that Candle is poised for a strong debut season. Athletic directors have come to appreciate the Mount Union lineage.

I love the end of the article:

"There's no telling how long Mount Union can extend this legacy. The streak will end someday, some way, somewhere. Then again. . . "Maybe," Kehres says with a grin, "it won't happen."

The article was written in 1999...and here we are 17 years later....the streak continues. Roll Raiders~Roll!

Maybe he did?  I have no idea who started in '94.  I just knew he started '95-'97.

The Mount website lists Ballard in 93 with Sinning also as a QB. The stats in 94 are for rushing and all purpose but no passing stats or players listed. 1995 has Borchert as does 96 and 97. I aint a math guy but if Bill played 4 years at Mount and graduated after 97 season (since Smeck started in 98) then I would say he may have played as a true Freshman in 94 (he certainly would have been on the roster). Where's Raider68?

desertraider,

Hope you are well. Bill B. played in 1994. I look for B-W to win big at home for this night game. JCU will have its hands full
with UWO tonight. :)

Borchert started as a true frosh in 94 with a very young team around him.   Was in a QB battle thru camp, got the start with the other guy supposedly going to play too, but he lit up Defiance and never left the field.

Beat Allegheny on the road in round 1 and lost at eventual national champion Albion in round 2 on two missed extra points 34-33.   It was right then that we realized the 93 championship was not an aberration and that LK had something special brewing.   No one anticipated it would be the dynasty it became, but we thought another trip to Salem was possible after seeing what that 94 team did.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

BW is up 14-0 at half.  Don't be misled, Defiance is not good.  Their D is scrappy, but their offense is awful.  And their starting QB limped off after wrenching his knee on a scramble.

Kira & Jaxon's Dad

A friend of mine's son scored a TD for BW tonight.  Jake Hudson.

Just returned from BW game. Defiance is terrible. Bad mistakes kept Defiance in the game early. BW is going to have to play a lot better then they showed tonight. I don't care what the final score was, that was ugly.

Dr. Acula

I watched the entire game online.  My thought was that Wilm would beat Defiance fairly easily.  Wilm is obviously not good, but they always have a handful of kids that you think "Man, that kid is a pretty nice player."  I saw none of that from Defiance.  They could not run the ball at all.  Their passing game seemed limited to 5 yard passes which were poorly executed most of the time.  The only thing I could guess was that both of things are the result of poor line play.

Moral of the story is that 42-0 looks good in the box score, but watching that game I was left completely unimpressed with BW.

Sherburne

I've been a bit surprised at the wondering about Bill Borchert's tenure at Mount, from several that I consider Raider guru's. With my declining neuron inventory I was hesitant to speak up.
Thank Coach and one or two others for clarifying before I called on Ric.
I do go back to the days of Larry QB and 'lonesome end' Bruce Cartwright. The height of my thrills in Mount Union Stadium began with Jim Ballard/Bill Borchert (the gunslingers) and continue to this day.

Im watching NC Wesleyan vs Stevenson on the net. Wesleyan is turnover prone. Qb throws picks with only light pressure. Its 20-7 first half. I perdict that Mount will empty the bench against them. Does anyone know of a game feed for the game?

Small but Slow

I saw many of the '94 & '95 games. Those were "young" teams with a lot of juniors and seniors starting for the first time. Both were a play or two away from making it to the Stagg Bowl. I believe it was LaCrosse in '94 and Adrian or Albion (a Michigan school) in '95 that ended Mount's season and won the Stagg Bowl. As a freshman, Borchert lacked the arm strength and command of the offense of Ballard, but by mid season his sophomore year he was slinging it pretty well.

Weslyan up by one at the half. They are not afraid to throw it. Stevenson gettin burned on the one on one coverage.

UW-LaX won the Stagg in '95.  Albion beat Mount Union in the quarterfinals in '94 by 1, beat St.John's in the semis by 3, then beat Washington & Jefferson by 23 in the Stagg.  No MIAA team has even made the semis before or since - Albion was definitely a streaking meteor!
