Short and Sweet

Good luck to our OAC teams Saturday. They have made a pretty good showing so far.
Keep in mind, they come from a lousy conference. John Carroll only made the playoffs because they got the automatic qualifier. Mount Union shouldn't even be in because they had a loss!
Go get 'em Purple Raiders and Blue Streaks.

Ah yes, short and sweet.

I don't disagree with the folks who say the conference is weak...because it is.  The bottom 8 teams are below average at best to horrific at worst.  With that said, I think the top two are better than folks realize, myself included.

Toph:   I agree 100%.   JCU and Mount are solid, very good teams.  The rest of the OAC is horrid.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

And think about this...as horrid as it is BW still went 2-8.  Ouch.

I understand a little bit why you say this as I've seen some folks picking against Mt or making the ol "this isn't a regular Mt team" post.  And of course lots of negatives about the conference, diminishing JCU's accomplishment.
That said, JCU is #6 and Mt is #7 in the country per D3 rankings.
I think there is a general respect for these two OAC teams and understanding that Mt, even at less than 100% of former self, is still better than nearly every D3 team, and as such, the team that beat them is also better than nearly every D3 team.

Now, Mt and JCU have beaten #'s 19 and #10, and unranked and #18 so far.  This is where both teams should be.

Cool moment from last Saturday's Wesley-JCU game. Someone snapped a pic of Wesley OC Chip Knapp and backup JCU QB Riley Larkin. They both played quarterback at Kent Roosevelt High School in Kent, Ohio. Division 3 football is cool in that way. There's always some kind of connection between programs, coaches and players.

Larkin's parents attended JCU and his father was on the team that tied Mount in the early 90s.

Leave it to the Patriots. Here is the formation I would like to see the Raiders use with Morris and Mitchell:

Putting them wide in the set would leave the option for a toss sweep to either side, and they are closer to the edge, or blocking and have one as receiver in check down. It limits the Ds ability to adjust because moving outside with LBs opens the middle for a quick between the tackle run. The DBs can't really cheat in given the WRs Mount has on the outside. Given the inability to just run inside with the 1 back set I would like to see something like this. Thoughts?

Edit- I would have just put the pic in the post, but for some reason I can't figure out how! And I went to an NCAC school (granted it was OAC then). ;D

Looks exactly like the splitback sets from the 49ers back in the Bill Walsh days.

And yes, this would be a good idea for Mount.

We ran our unbalanced veer offense in high school out of wide split backs all the time.   Made misdirection and inside traps very hard to defend while helping the slow white kids make it to the corner on sweeps and speed options.

Would it be realistic to throw this at Dom Davis right now and expect success?

section13raiderfan

Kids who have no idea about tactics use that set and the pitch in backyards all over town. Davis is more than qualified to run it. Its to benefit the smallish backs, not the QB. I would be more worried about someone shooting the gap and no blockers close enough to pick up the rush. Please Santa bring us a pounder.
