And, for a small-school conference, they draw tremendous crowds.  Last year's Coldwater/Marion Local game had a 50/50 drawing where the winner received over $14,700.  Yep, that was 50% of the total.....they gave it to the winner in a pillowcase.

I travelled to Lima for an away game vs Massillon and they had a "progressive" 50-50 field goal contest. Evidently the prize had not been claimed in a long time. They drew a ticket and the contestant had one try to kick a field goal from 40 yards. This evening a mid thirtyish gent was escorted to the field and they announced his name and the grand prize total. The guy stood there arms crossed and evidently not at all excited or worried. He took 2 steps and kicked a winner. The crowd went crazy. The announcer congratulated him and asked what he was going to do with his winnings. "Donate it back" he said, crossed his arms again and walked back to his seat. I can't remember the exact prize amount but I remember my buddy saying that he woulda bought a car with it. After we all said what a nice guy he was, a lady leaned over to us and said he was local kid that was the kicker in high school back in the day. Its amazing how fast we all started to call it a big setup. If so, it worked great for the school. Nobody bitched. We all went home happy.

What a great and uplifting story, section13raiderfan.  It is encouraging and proof that not all young people today (including, I am sorry to say, some of our student-athlete college football players) have the selfish, entitlement attitude.  From your description, I can (almost) experience the same very neat feeling you and those around you felt as if I had been sitting next to you.

Your relating of this story reminds me of a somewhat similar one  that I witnessed about 15 years ago (or perhaps a bit longer, I can't right off hand recall the exact year-you know, one of those "senior moments" ::) ;D ;)).  My brother and I (and our very close friend and his dad) were playing in our "annual" golf foursome in the annual Alma College football golf fundraiser outing.  The owner of one of the local car dealerships always sponsored a "hole in one" for that annual outing on one of the course's par three holes.  For many years prior, no one at the football outing ever made a hole-in-one until that year, when one of my brother's former Alma football teammates (a huge lineman guy) accomplished the feat.  It was a substantial prize and he, without hesitating, donated it all back to the college for the football program.  I was impressed and for a younger guy like that (he was probably about the age of the young man in your story), I'm sure it took some courage. However, it was also obvious that he unhesitatingly exercised his unselfishness, which I absolutely believe he learned (and had exhibited according to my brother as to the type of person his teammate was) from his experience in being an Alma team football player.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the story.  Those kinds of uplifting true tales that you and others periodically share here on the boards, IMO, is  another reason that helps contribute to making this website worthwhile, in addition to its main purpose of providing a venue for promoting  DIII football, thanks to Pat (and his staff). +k for you.

2 of the 6 picked JCU to beat UWW in Quick Hits.  I was a little surprised at that.  Pat picked UWW 26-13.  That's more what I was thinking myself.  Something like UWW is up 21-14, JCU gets a couple possessions with a chance to tie, but UWW stops them and then UWW puts together one of those UWW drives and punches in the insurance score in the 4th and rides their D the rest of the way.  I think it'll be a good game.

The game I'm picturing is very much like this. JCU misses a PAT opportunity early and is chasing a point for a while. Whitewater can move the ball a bit between the 20s and puts a TD in early but has to settle for field goals on three possessions to make it something like 16-6. Whitewater gets a turnover and scores on a relatively short field to go up 23-6, JCU plays a little more desperate and scores a TD and UWW caps the scoring with a field goal.
Nice specific take. Definitely plausible. It's kind of how UW-W often rolls when playing a good team. It should be a fun game!

Great start.

Nice scoring to drive to answer the pick 6.  Let's see how the D looks.

D forces a fumble in Alfred territory.  O turns it into another TD.  14-7.

I wonder if the Mount Union players plan on doing the "shush" motion to the crowd after every touchdown.  They are 2 for 2 thus far.

Unfortunately for Alfred, I think the crowd will be plenty quiet eventually.  This matchup really favors Mount Union.

It doesn't seem like Alfred Dbs can keep up with Mount Union WRs. They will have to make some adjustments.

Agreed.  Had a feeling Mount would roll today and it's certainly looking the part early.

This one is going to get ugly.  How was Alfred given the #2 seed in this bracket?

Dr. Acula

I believe they're actually the 1 seed.

Just looking at the bracket, usually the #1 is at the very bottom (JHU) on the lower half of the bracket.  Alfred is at the same place JCU is in the bracket, and we know JCU is the #2.

What receiver tosses the football in the defender's face down two touchdowns?   ???  Stupid penalty!

Don never finished the song ... Alfred scored so quickly.

I was just going by them calling it the Alfred region.
