I'm not sure about in D3, but I believe it was Northwestern that I just read had endowed its men's hoops HC position thanks to alumni donors.

Wanted to post earlier but just didn't get around to it. Huge congrats to LK on his HoF enshrinement. With all of his accomplishments (and we Mounties know them all by heart) it was long overdue. I would still like to see his name on a trophy, or a field or a stadium, or a wing at the HoF - even though I also know he would personally lead the effort to prevent any of these from happening (and that is simply another reason why he is so deserving). In his first 10 years the raiders were 30-10-2: an outstanding record for most any school....but in his last 23 he did the unimaginable and went 302-14-1. Heck, I witnessed, in some regard, those last 23 years....and even I can't believe the numbers. Amazing.

QuoteMount Union (D-III – OH): Mason HS (MI) head coach Jerry VanHavel is leaving to join Mount Union as a program assistant, according to the Lansing State Journal. VanHavel was 169-88 leading the program, including a 9-2 record this past fall.

Here's an article about it:  http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/sports/high-school/2017/01/12/longtime-mason-football-coach-jerry-vanhavel-steps-down/96517178/

A little more on that from WLIX:
"Jerry Van Havel has stepped aside after 26 years as head football coach at Mason High School. He likely will step down in June from his middle school teaching post. Van Havel has accepted a part time job as recruiting coordinator for division three Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Van Havel's son, Jarrett, is a safety on the current Mount Union team. Mason has just begun the process of searching for a replacement. Mason made the state playoffs this past season before losing to DeWitt in the district final game."

Now, I need to inform WLIX it it "University of Mount Union"

This is interesting.  It seems to jive with what's been a ramped up recruiting of MI the last several years.  VK must see that as a place they have an advantage in recruiting.  I would have thought the opposite with all the D2's up there.  Hopefully VanHavel can find us another good RB after Nemeth and Mitchell panned out well from MI.

On a high school football message board, someone is claiming that BW is down to three finalists -- the current LaSalle High School head coach (Hilvert), Adam Howard, the Berea-Midpark AD who was the head coach at Notre Dame College from 20019-2015 and a former coach at Blufton.

I am not sure who that third person would be.  Perhaps, it is referring to Tyson Veidt.  He left Bluffton and got on the Matt Campbell Train at Toledo and followed him to Iowa State.  That just does not make sense to me though as he is the Assistant HC/LB Coach at Iowa State.  Not be a broken record, but that is a major step back in pay unless he wants to get back to D3 athletics/environs. I cannot think of or find any other former Bluffton coaches that would be young enough to take over.

Disclaimer:  The credibility of high school message board posters make us look Edward R Murrow-trained journalists.

That message board is wrong.

There's no way on earth the JCU admins end. Up with two finalists who coached at Bluffton during the really lean years.  If they did, they missed an opportunity.
AMC Champs: 1991-1992-1993-1994-1995

Bridge Bowl Champs:  1990-1991-1992-1993-1994-1995-2002-2003-2006-2008-2009-2010-2011-2012-2013 (SERIES OVER)
Undefeated: 1991, 1995, 2001, 2009, 2010, 2015
Instances where MSJ quit the Bridge Bowl:  2

Dr. Acula

That's the supposed finalists for BW not JCU.

Hilvert is legit.  Howard makes sense because he's a former BW assistant and has HC experience.  Who the Bluffton assistant would be is a mystery.

Dr. A:
For sure, VH has had the past connection with Mount Union and I can't see that doing anything but helping them recruit in MI even more.  Yet, you are correct that with all the DII schools, and now the influx of NAIA scholarship programs here in MI, that has certainly had some impact on recruiting for the MIAA schools the past several years.

I would assume that being at the point in his career where he can "retire"-actually, I don't call those type of situations as retiring because those are, in reality, just making a career job change-that VH can afford to take a position like that.  It would be interesting to know how much Mount Union is going to pay him as salary for a part time position such as that.  Good move on their part, though, without question.

Don't worry. I screamed at the TV last night when the sports reporter on the 6 o'clock news said Mount Union College. A different sports report went the safe way on the 11 o'clock news and just said Mount Union.

Unless you've got a special two-way TV or a REALLY loud voice, desertraider probably still needs to inform them of the error! ;D

In fairness to those newscasters (who probably don't know D3 from a hole in the ground), even here on these boards I still see posters sometimes using MUC, though it is almost always posters with very low post counts, so either newbies or very part-timers. ;)  I use UMU, but more often just The Machine. :P

I send WILX stuff all the time on Olivet athletics, and they have been at Olivet for an athletic event only a couple times in my almost 15 years.

Looks like the block RAIDERS on the jersey is coming back.  I'm a big fan of that little nod to tradition.

New purple jersey

I doubt they will come with that Large Font.  When you use NIKE's Uniform Builder Online that is the only way it show's up.  I bet it will be smaller like the current Black/White/Gray Jerseys.

Not having a coach is nerve racking for JCU fans.  I would assume we are missing out on some key recruiting time without a coach in place.  What would be a reasonable timeframe for getting a new coach?
