Shark, yes really!  ;D

And possibly what is worse than getting beat by 98 is completely whiffing on a punt. Of course there could have been a strong wind that redirected the ball once it was dropped to kick.

My comment was not in reference to the St. John's score but to the outward rejoicing over JCU and others losing. I should have quoted your earlier comment to make that clear. Nevertheless, I am not sure why you felt it was necessary to gloat over JCU and UWW losses on this board.

I guess I look at things like an SEC fan.  I dislike every single one of the other OAC schools (some much more than others) when we play them.  But the moment they step outside of the conference I'm standing behind them waving my OAC flag.  I want 10-0 in OOC and OAC teams winning every playoff game until they face each other.  The better the OAC is the better for all of us.  That's especially true for anyone vying for a pool C.

Now that touchbacks on kickoffs are brought out to the 25 why wouldnt a returner let the ball go into the endzone instead of risking getting blasted by the special teamers and failing to return it to the 20? Mounts kickoff team was awesome against NCW. Will kickers now try not to kick it into the endzone if the special teamers are likely to tackle the runner insde the 20? Once again rule changes are screwing up the game. It wasnt broke, so why fix it?  After seeing the kick coverage on Saturday I wouldnt want to return it on those boys!

Out of curiosity, how is touchbacks to the 25 ruining the game?  Is this a big deal in D-III?

Also, this has been in place for five years already. I would have to think teams have made their adjustments.

Its not ruining the game. Its changing it and I feel its not bettering the game at all. If anyone sees the beauty of it... enlighten me please.

In a similar vein.... spotting the ball at the 35 for kicking the ball out of bounds is an excessive penalty for the the offense comitted to me.  Thats a third of the field . Thats too much. Wouldnt the 25 be reward enough? You cant make it that easy for the offense IMHO.

So someone could kick the ball intentionally out of bounds to avoid a standout return man and have the other team start at the 25? That's ludicrous, hate to say.

Agreed. What kicker would ever want to put forth the effort to kick it out of the end zone for a touchback (spotted at 25) if he can just kick it out of bounds at the 30 with the same results?

The old rules where you could choose to have the ball rekicked or chose to spot it where it went out was better than the new rule. the ball spotting now is way to punitive for the infraction. Earn your field position, don't let the refs award it,

Lets play you make the call. The teams are tied with 4 seconds left. The red team kicks to the blue team. Blue is in the standard formation for a deep kick. For some unknown reason the kicker kicks it short and high. The ball goes the required 10 yards [but less than 11}The red teams player jumps for the ball and times it to out jump the blue player closest to recovering the kick. As the high jumping red player goes for the ball the high IQ blue player signals for a fair catch. Red wins possession but flags are thrown for fair catch interference. What would you call and where would you spot the ball? I actually saw this in a high school game. Still not sure it was called right.

section13raiderfan

The ruling was that the fair catch signal overruled the red players right to recover the kick, even though after 10 yards its anybodies ball! The HI IQ player argued for a walkoff on the penalty AND the right for a free kick! This was granted. The red teamers lined up for max pressure in an attempt to block the kick. The HI IQ guy demanded that the red team back 10 yards off the line of scrimmage by rule,  to better the chances of the kicker. An argument arose from the benches whether this was proper as it offered little chance to block the kick. The kicker argued that since it was a free kick the ball could be spotted without a snap. Was he right?

I think one could argue that the penalty isn't strong enough for missing a target 53 1/3 yards wide.
