reality check

If a bigger name comes calling for Matt Campbell, he'd be a fool not to do it strictly from a financial standpoint.  Now, he's not hurting with a 2017 base salary of $2.1M but if one of the more notable programs wants to throw bigger money at him, it would take more loyalty than I could fathom to turn it down.  The most likely scenario that keeps him in Aimes is if ISU restructuring his contract.

Iowa State might have had a new offer on the table by the time the players had showered. . . .

But, if Campbell WERE to leave and take his staff with him, only one person would be his logical successor.

Sherburne:  Thanks for the research.  I was looking for the last time neither the WIAC nor the OAC got a wild card.

So - 2012?

Matt Campbell is going no where.  He has Larry Kehres type loyalty and a huge buyout. ( I heard that the AD that hired him wanted to make sure he had him locked and made the buyout crazy high)  I think he will stay to finish the job he has started. If Iowa State were smart they would tear up the contract and extend him with another million added to his 2 mill salary.
Two tricky games coming in WVa and Okla State.  Both will be toss up games, IMO/.

Sideline photographer said he heard Ottebein QB's leg bone snap.  I would have thrown up, had I been standing there.  A real shame for a good player,  senior with a couple games left. The kid was definitely hurting when they put on the air cast.  Hope he recovers fast and successfully.

Matt Campbell is not going anywhere. He is not a take the money and run guy. He may at some point leave ISU for wherever, but not until he feels he has fulfilled his obligation to ISU. He went to ISU to turn it around, not to beat 2 ranked teams. I keep thinking of Mount/UWW semi-final. Everyone from players to coaches - beating UWW wasn't the goal, National Championship is the goal. Not saying Matt won't leave ISU until he gets one there - but so far it's one good half year. I don't think that was the goal for young Mr. Campbell.

However - Jason Candle (IMHO) will be announced as a HC at either: Arkansas, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Tennessee, or Missouri. I think he would be a great fit at Mizzou (the players have essentially quit the system), Tennessee (same reason) or Nebraska - they have talent and no clue how to use it.

You have to wonder how long Toledo can keep replacing quality coaches with quality coaches.

Depends - they gonna leave Mount's sideline alone and stop cherry picking? ;D I mean Campbell, Candle, Manning, Khere - not even gonna finish typing that one.

Tip of the cap to Marietta for beating Heidelberg and Ohio Northern in consecutive weeks to clinch at least a .500 season with two games to play.  A win in either of the next two would give the Pioneers their first winning season since 2006 (which, I think, is also the last time that they beat either 'Berg and ONU in the same season).
I was small but made up for it by being slow...

But this goes back a ways, with not much interruption.  I mean - all the way back to 1990.  That coach wasn't bad.

I think Marietta has found itself a coach - and a recruiter.

A number of coaches have done a good job in the OAC this season.  Marietta stands out, however, you have to give Wilmington some props for winning and being more competitive.  BW and JCU will improve as time goes on and ONU will be over .500 every season.

Guys, it's not a knock on Campbell if he were to go to a bigger destination than ISU.  Didn't he leave Toledo and an offer to be the highest paid MAC coach to go to Iowa State in the first place?  It's not a dig and I don't think it would be a bad thing if he was offered and accepted a job at an upper echelon school.  I have no idea what school that would be but let's say Florida would come calling (since that's on the tip of the media's tongues today).  McElwain is making around $3.5M a year.  If that same money was offered to Campbell, I don't see loyalty being the reason he stays.  If the money didn't matter then he'd be Toledo's HC and making around $1M.  I don't blame him at all for going to ISU and wouldn't blame him at all if he were offered more at a destination program if he took it.  I just hope a former classmate of mine at ONU and current WR Coach/ST Coord Bryan Gasser stays on his staff.

Loyalty doesn't have much to do with stopping Matt taking another job if he thinks it helps advance his career and is better for his family.  LK has often encouraged those he has mentored move on and go for opportunities to advance.

Some of you guys remind me of my boss. If a guy says "money is not my motivator" he literally takes it as "I don't have to give him a raise cuz he doesn't want money". Not saying that about Matt. Not saying he wouldn't want more money. Read his interview about taking the ISU job. First thing he said is "his family" liked it, liked the community, the area, etc.. He doesn't say anywhere in there "they said 2mil and I jumped". He also said he knew Toledo was in a good place if he chose to leave and that he talked to Toledo before making decision and they supported it. Toledos AD said 'we are used to this in the MAC (losing good coaches').

He will be offered more money - but if he doesn't think he has achieved what he came to ISU to do and that a move would be good for his family he won't go. I can't see him taking his family into the swamp with rumors of death threats to players and coaches (probably not true BTW - but still). I can hear that conversation:
Matt- Honey Florida really wants me
Mrs Campbell - didn't the last guys family get death threats
Matt - those probably aren't true and its 3.5 mil
Mrs C - 2mils enough I'm staying

From the "always look on the bright side of life" file (I love The Life of Brian):

Otterbein write up of the game: Stepp threw for 96 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions while under pressure all day long, and also rushed for another 64 yards before his exit. Running back Christian Johnson toted 12 times for just 17 yards, but the offense did have a 34:29 time of possession and converted 8 of 18 third-down chances.
