I was also an ATO, class of 1957, also at MUC. HEY, MUC57. Took me a long time to come up with that one.
I too remember the old paddle. It stings more with snow down your pants. Also, we.............
Let's get off of memory lane. There was worse done during pledge period.
Was that hazing? I guess it was. Bottom line seems to be what does hazing mean? In high school. In this day and age. I' sure we'll find out in time.
In the meantime, I'll reserve judgement until the facts come out.
Same holds true for any other possible allegations.

I get that. However I counter with:
1. Warrant Issued (i.e. not merely a witch hunt)
2. Jail and $5,000 bond
3. Extradition granted
4. Felony Battery is charge. Not stealing sunglasses, not breaking a window - not scaling the watertower in Alliance and getting busted (which resulted in the 3 athletes involved being suspended from team activities). Not sure where hazing comes in to this - but the charge, as reported by WKYC and others is Felony Battery.
5. When he has to report is meaningless. A good lawyer would not even mention football - judges get pissed when it looks like favoritism. A good lawyer would argue the academic side: nearing end of term, finals coming up, we don't want to jeopardize his academic standing and ask..yada yada yada.

I don't care when he has to report - charges, a warrant and extradition on a felony charge should mean he doesn't play. Life is bigger than football. We have seen athletes removed for less than felony charges (violation of student conduct code is not exactly a crime folks). I hammered Wheton for letting their kids play after the hazing incident and then dragging their feet to suspend them until they realized it wouldn't stay swept under the rug. I expect more from Mount. We all do. We praise LK for his do it the right way, no nonsense, integrity driven, team first approach. I will be disappointed if Fulford plays.

I wish you guys would quit making solid arguments on both sides of whether or not to play Fulford.  How's a guy supposed to know what to think?

merle - This is different from Namdar. AND - you are foregtting that Namdar had the added issue of evading police and resisting arrest. Stop making it sound like Barney Fife "nothing to see here". It was more than that.

Hard to argue with your analysis. You won me over. (I'm sure that makes your day).
Very eloquent presentation of the facts. You really did teach at Mount, didn't you?

Go Raiders.

I did teach at Mount (2002-2014). I was there for the watertower, Namdar, Lattimore. 2 of the students on the watertower were in my class, wrestlers. I have seen players kick players off the team (football) for skipping workouts. I have seen players not play for conduct issues (we have all seen and talked about that here). I have seen students (non-athletes) kicked out of school for inappropriate social media activity - I saw faculty booted for inappropriate internet activity. Point: none of those came with a warrant, jail, bond, or extradition.

I teach at a different Uni now. I teach, among other things: Ethics. This is about doing whats right. Stand by D'Angelo. Support him in thought and words. Encourage him to confront this and be a man. Promise him "we will be here when you get back" and "we will help however we can". But teach him football is not a pass. A good arm is not a pass. Being a good QB is not a pass. Life has happened - go deal with life. Character is about what you do when no one is looking. We all say VK and LK have character - well, we are now all looking. We will see.

My 2 favorite stories from Mount.
1) Before a Stagg Bowl all players have/had to complete all course work and exams AND have a yellow sheet signed off by each Professor or they could not go. I had a kid skip the exam, send an email asking to retake after he returned. I got email during the exam. I emailed that he failed if he didn't show up. He didn't. I didn't hear his name the entire game. They stood by their rule.

2) Had a kid who would turn out to be great. Had trouble getting to class at 8am. Missed first 6 classes. A Coach showed up with him after the 6th class. All the coach said was "If he has already failed so be it, but if he misses class again email me". The he looked at the player and said "You miss another class and you can turn in all your equipment". The kid did not miss another class, was not late, and actually didn't do bad. But - they stuck to their rule.

That's why I loved teaching at Mount and that's why I love Mount football. It was about the right way. I hope it still is.

I agree that he should not play.  Story is filtering out (again unsubstantiated ) that Fulford missed the court appearance because he and mom moved and did not receive court  notice.  Sounds a bit fishy.  He obviously knew he had been arrested and should have followed up. Where was his attorney, if he had one.  Regardless, it is a mess that Mount Union should not have to deal with.
If he plays, I would be absolutely shocked.  He has a couple very good attorneys now, and they may attempt to get it resolved as soon as possible if it can be done.

They may attempt to get it resolved - absolutely. But it isn't happening before tomorrow. Let him take the field if you have to - but let the clip board not leave his hand. I don't think he should dress. Sidelines, jeans, jacket, clip board.

You are right it is fishy. It looks like he tried to run from it. The Florida court will - regardless of severity of charges - not drop until he appears in court...in Florida. It was serious enough to warrant a felony charge for battery (not a misdemeanor people) and issue a warrant because he fled the jurisdiction. Got a feeling it may be more serious than a fraternity paddle in the snow.

his "obstructing" charge was dismissed as well.  It was all garbage from the start.  But I agree this is different.  Fulford should have taken care of this juvenile court issue back in 2015 and he'll have to pay the price now.  Start Poorman and kick Fulford's ass in practice over the next couple of weeks.

des,

Before today, this MUC follower since 1967, wanted bookend Stagg Bowl Championships in Salem. I still do! But in the weird political environment of assault charges, the timing of the current issue at Mount could raise an eyebrow, or two.
I have respected and admired your 'career' here on the OAC forum possibly from 2005. You are among the very top football intellects posting 'football' here.
Your stance on 'play or sit'?  Sidelines, jeans, jacket, clip board? Compelling. I hope they collect 'walnut and bronze' #13, with Fulford on the sidelines, jeans, jacket, clip board.
Hopefully, D'Lo can play again for #14 and 15 in '18 and '19.

Where did you see Juvenile court? In FL Felony Battery carries a maximum 5 year prison sentence.

784.03 Battery; felony battery.—
(1)(a) The offense of battery occurs when a person:
1. Actually and intentionally touches or strikes another person against the will of the other; or
2. Intentionally causes bodily harm to another person.
(b) Except as provided in subsection (2), a person who commits battery commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
(2) A person who has one prior conviction for battery, aggravated battery, or felony battery and who commits any second or subsequent battery commits a felony of the third degree.

                  ------OR------
784.041 Felony battery; domestic battery by strangulation.—
(1) A person commits felony battery if he or she:
(a) Actually and intentionally touches or strikes another person against the will of the other; and
(b) Causes great bodily harm, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement.

The next section address the domestic battery by strangulation - but that wasn't mentioned in charge so I am not including it. So it's either Felony Battery because its he already has a misdemeanor OR it resulted in great bodily harm, disability or disfigurement. I don't know the details - but that is the Florida statute.

Sherb - Thanks.

I want bookends too. But - I don't want an "*" next to any of them - literally or figuratively.

Reminds me of Michigan, at least in the Bo Schembechler era.  When I was a teaching assistant there, an assistant football coach leaned on a fellow TA to change a grade for a football player.  He was an Asian student, and (clearly quite shaken), asked me what should he do.  We went to see the Department Head; he called Bo; the assistant coach cleared out his desk later that same day!  I have no way of knowing if UM is still that scrupulous, but Bo will always be one of my heroes.
