Mr. Ypsi

No, I'm hardly superman. I must admit, no one guesses my age. I look reasonable for an old guy. Still have a full head of hair.
But Mount doesn't want me playing QB. Frostburg State might want me at QB, that is, playing for UMU. Besides, some one has to stay in the stands to assist the ladies. Hey, I'm old, not dead.
But I digress. Nice chatting with you Mr. Ypsi.

I salute you.  My parents both lived into their 90s.  I'm 69, and there are days I'm uncertain I'll make 70. ::)

In my mid 50s I still played competitive (supposedly non-competitive, but that was BS; we were highly competitive!) soccer; I retired after (in a five minute period) I both broke my big toe (didn't stop me; didn't REALLY hurt until later that night) and had my glasses shattered (had to leave since the sun had already set and my only replacement was prescription sunglasses).  It has been definitely downhill since then.

But, I too still have a full head of hair!  Unlike my brothers. ;)

This has been a jumbled mess.  Between the USTD guys chiming in to just stir the pot (not you bench but darn man you are getting out there on the edge of being lumped in with Rev & Mr. MIAC 952 yada yada yada), and the other D-3 posters who all have the absolute right to their opinion, especially since it's social media where all is "free & easy".

I am not saying this kid is Mr. Wonderful.  He is certainly no Greg Micheli, and any other of the multiple of hundreds of Mount kids that have put on the uniform.  However, straight from the people that know him, and interact with him every day, this is a pretty darn good kid.  So do we say, "no you aren't acting responsible you stupid 19-20 year old kid, therefore, we will punish you because you have tainted the reputation of UMU, and that is not what we are about".  With the PC, instant internet/everything is out there world we live in these days, maybe that is the tact all the responsible people at Mount should have taken.  I for one, am glad they didn't.  Especially having the luxury of knowing some of the intimate details.

Mark, I have known you a very long time, and totally respect your opinion.  However, if you were still working with Ric on-air, and were privy to some of the details that you might have been back in those days, I am thinking your opinion might be different. These days I don't live & die with whether Mount wins a National Championship or not.  I don't think I ever did, but I am much less emotionally &  time invested than I used to be.  I hope the kid keeps learning, and Mount will be fine no matter what anyone says on this message board.

One last thing, darn I think FSU is going to give Mount one heck of a challenge whether this controversy was lingering or not.  I for one look forward to that game on Saturday.

sidekick:   I believe the specifics of all this ends up being nothing, but that's immaterial to my belief that Mount would have been better served by suspending him immediately when the 1st issue arose.   They could have then re-instated him at any point, even the next day, and it would have eliminated 99% of this negative PR.   That is my point.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Agree with this.  A really big part of why this story has legs is because Mount Union has had zero forward face on it.  Their statement two weeks ago was weak and pointless.  The no comment this week doubled down on that.  If there are honest misunderstandings at play here, why not say so?  The silence, fair or not, insinuates hiding, dumps gas on the speculation fire, and keeps the story going.  I think Mount Union has had opportunity to squash this, but if I'm reporting on this, and they keep saying nothing, I'm going to keep watching this thing develop to see what it is they are hiding.   Maybe it's not that big of a deal (although driving while suspended and missing court dates- plural- is a big deal...not knowing is an excuse that doesn't travel very far), but the university willfully not being in front of it makes it feel like a bigger deal than it probably is.  F-minus for Mount Union PR over the last couple of weeks.

Once again I concur with your observation. The Mount PR people dropped the ball, so to speak.
Some of the inane comments from yesterday could have been eliminated. I suppose we would have still had the same remarks from the St. Thomas crowd.
I'm possibly not making much sense. I can't believe some of the mean, nasty things said yesterday.
Comments from the lawyers made me realize why they rank with used car salesmen as far as credibility. Not impressed at all.
Other comments were equally stupid (IN MY OPINION ). Sounded like the ravings of the uninformed..
Ah Wally, you do a much better job on your critique than I. Shall defer to your expertise.

Mr Mom

You caught me on the NJAC board yesterday. Much quieter and friendlier. But you were also there.
I hope yesterday never happens again. I really hope this remains "D3football.com" and not :
  "I'm a lawyer and you're not.com"
  "Mount has no credibility.com"
  "Inane comments.com"
  "Let's make wild speculation.com"
And a host of others.
I'll end with a simple (maybe that's me!)   Go Purple Raiders!

I know y'all love to jump on the Tommies (and I'll admit, there are some Tommie posters on here who post some really stupid stuff, as you might admit about a few of the UMU posters and fans), but I would really love to see which particular comments you are taking such offense to that really differ from what anyone else is saying about the situation, including some of the respected Mount Union posters. Bench shared a perspective as a lawyer and also noted that putting any coach/athletic figure on a pedestal is a dangerous thing to do. From all appearances, it seems that Mount has bungled this situation.

At the risk of sounding naive, is your comment (^^^) good?

Turning to the game.
I admittedly know very little about Frostburg State. But does anyone else remember the sitcom Yes Dear from CBS (ran from 2000-2006)? Jimmy Hughes, one of the main characters, was established as a 1 semester attendee of Frostburg State (until, as one character put it, he turned it into Drunken State). Not sure how having such a famous connection will affect the outcome of the game, but things might be looking bleak for Mount! ;)

I've said enough. Probably too much. No further comments from me. At least, not now!

Perhaps he'll be in the locker room to give them a rousing pep talk pre-game.

Yes.  But I believe Bench's comments to be very informative.  There has been some craziness on both sides of the fence on this topic.
