If all eligible returning starters come back next year, Oshkosh will return 7 offensive starters and 9 defensive starters. Yes, we will lose the marquee names at QB, RB, and WR, but the cupboard is hardly bare. We all know that the game is won in the trenches, and we will return 4 starting offensive linemen and 6 of 7 defensive linemen on the two deep. No reason to think our competitive window is closing after this year.

what year did those juniors graduate high school, 2010?  Whoever is in charge of the NOT-redshirting program at UWO is doing a good job.  I bet those freshman intramural flag football teams are tough at UWO

What are you talking about Merle?

a lot of 5th year guys on UWO.  Nothing more or less, just an observation

That's actually really interesting, and most of these are not medical waivers  either, they are just guys that chose not to play football their freshman year.

I'm honestly not trying to stir things up with UWO fans, but it does seem peculiar that future all Americans Dylan Hecker and Brett Kasper, came to Oshkosh in 2013 (per their roster's player notes)  but just weren't on the team that year. Same situation with Sam Mentkowski.

Oh boy... now i've gone down a UWO roster rabbit hole.. here are some more 5th year seniors

Jamier Szymanksi LB
Ty Summers - OL
Andy Jones- WR
Derek Polkowski- TE

Sure, it's technically not red-shirting, but it's tough to argue that these guys didn't benefit from an extra year of weight training and studying the playbook.

Am I missing something? Is there some quirk of the UW college system that's causing this and it's really not as nefarious as it seems?

Pat Coleman

Greyshirting isn't uncommon. Guys come to campus, find out they won't make the team and are handed a weightlifting guide and told to come back for the next season. They do not practice, etc. Not a member of the team for that year.

Someone else can talk to whether it's still difficult to get all your courses in a big state school and get through your program in four years.

RE: 5th year seniors......meh. Forbes reported that only 58% of undergrads get their degree within 6 years. Politifact released a study showing just 39% got theirs within 4 years. Math....58....39...19% difference. Unless UWO has more than 19% of their roster listed as 5th year - I'm gonna Barney Fife this "move along folks, nothing to see here".

Oh and I forgot - it's Wisconsin so that's 5 hunting seasons...we'll say 5 terms (gotta buy new cammo, clean your weapons, range fire, tweek your deer stand, find just the right eau de deer piss - a lot of time so take the semester off)...maybe they are actually ahead of the curve. ;D

Desert is right, WI is not a state of Hurry.
Slow and steady.

I don't expect you all to make a big deal of the greyshirt thingy. If inquiring minds (Mr WRMU) really want to know, please at least post Mt's history (which I have no idea of nor do I care) for context.
I'd hate for this week to turn into conspiratorial question week.

On the downside, 5-year players have to pay for 5 years-or 4.5 years or however it works.

I know Mount has had a few - one I know of was Justin Stickley. Now if we are talking about 6th or 7th year, or suddenly a slew of D1 guys transfer (talking about you  8-)) then maybe theres something to see. But I am sure it is all good.

Okay thanks all for the explanations. Genuinely didn't realize this was a common practice. I guess i didn't notice since it's pretty uncommon at Mount. Apologies for implying nefariousness UWO fans :)

Kira & Jaxon's Dad

I thought I remember reading in the past that the WIAC has roster limits and Grayshirting was a common practice, at least at UWW maybe.

I was wondering that as well, roster limits would make sense. I'm assuming wiac teams don't have JV teams like OAC teams then right?

From looking at Mounts JV schedule, maybe those are going away as well. I saw they only played 5 games this year? At least that is what is listed. Normally they play a full schedule. Could impact down the road.

well...5 years of tuition at a state school is..... not going to open that can of worms.

At 24 years old, I didn't know that Mount would be trying to tackle Dr Dylan Hecker or pick off Brett Kasper, MBA.  The early kickoff seems to be in Oshkosh's favor.  Kick at 12, dinner by 4:00 and bed by 8:00

Pat Coleman

Are you setting up excuses for losing already? Might let Mount play the game first.

I'm not sure what you mean.  There's no 3rd string freshman QB for Mount this year.

That would be supper.
Happy hour is at 5, Old Fashions first, dinner, capped with a Brandy Alexander, and then bed.

As an aside, I have a kid at Mizzou, a kid at W VA and a kid at UWW. UWW costs me the most. Someone's got to pay for Fancyland in Candyland.

They've only been scheduling 7-8 JV games a year the past few years now.  And it seems like they always end up having to cancel at least one so I don't think they're way off.  My guess is maybe they scaled it down a notch because the freshmen class this year was smaller than normal.
