It seems that Coach Vanhavel (former Michigan HS coach) is doing work for UMU! This weekend he got some serious players to come to campus to visit. 5 guys from Cass Tech came from Detroit and they're a serious football school in the big division. Serious athletes like Vernon Gholston, Jourdan Lewis, Mike Weber, William Campbell, Damon Webb, etc. Anyway lots of D1 players at Michigan, Michigan State and OSU. Also a very nice prospect in Zaavon Scott from West Catholic in MI. Need Mr. Mitchell to pull some strings...or is that an NCAA violation?
Keep working coach!

Question. Is Micheli the only Mt QB to win two Stagg Bowls? Was he mvp for the two?

HScoach

Greg Micheli only won one (1) Stagg as the starter.   In 2006 Mike Jorris was the starter even though Micheli played most of the game and stole the show.   That was the year LK hid the fact that Micheli could actually throw the ball as he was only used as a running option in the later stages of the regular season and playoffs.

Can't remember all of the MVP's.   It's been too long and I'm too old.

Here's the list of Mount QB's to start and win the Stagg Bowl:

1993:  Jim Ballard
1996:  Bill Borchert
1997:  Bill Borchert
1998:  Gary Smeck
2000:  Gary Smeck
2001:  Rob Adamson
2002:  Rob Adamson
2005:  Mike Jorris
2006:  Mike Jorris
2008:  Greg Micheli
2012:  Kevin Burke
2015:  Taurice Scott
2017:  D'Angelo Fulford
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

For whatever reason I didn't think Mt had four QB's repeat as Stagg champions- impressive. Of course my annoyance w Mt didn't start until 2005.
I understand giving credit to Joris as the starter, but I'm giving Micheli the W for 2006 and of course 2008.

I agree on Micheli - but man Jorris threw a great deep ball. Kid could really sling it.

Look a non-UMU post! We do care!

Check out this tweet I found. It sounds like good news for JCU's McKenrick.
And finally, one of the stars of the practice was @JohnCarrollU LB turned safety Mason McKenrick. Impressed every NFL teams. Multiple teams said he'll at least be on their 90-man roster, despite being from a D3 school. #DreamBowl

This is from the Dream Bowl and Roger Walker (RB) from Marietta, Julian Lowe (WR) from Otterbein, Sterling Clark from Wilmington(OT), Vidal and McKenrick. Nice representation for the OAC.

Check out http://www.dreambowl.net/2018-rosters/ for their combine numbers. Not to much there yet except McKenrick ran a 4.55 40, 37.5 vertical and 9-9 broad jump. Those are solid numbers

That's very interesting.  One would think you'd be able to mine some serious athletes out of that program.  I see numerous kids tweeting at Coach Vanhavel so he's clearly putting in work.  Great job coach!

Dr. A and hsbsballcoach:
Please forgive me as I'm not intending this as a negative comment on your posts. I think it is great that Coach Vanhavel is a consultant coach in recruiting for Mount's program- that certainly is an "out of the box" idea that has been started. Having been in his area when he was coaching, I know of his expertise.
That said, I am not sure if I misunderstood your last post. We're you referring to the many D1 players that have been from the Detroit Cass Tech program? I assume that is what you meant, because (and again no disrespect intended toward Mount), I would find it difficult to believe that any of those Michigan players you mention would be turning down full rides to those D1 schools..
So I assume you were referring to he other players who are great athletes, but who would not otherwise receive a D1 (or D2) offer. Thanks for clarification.

I just meant that a program like Cass Tech is littered with athletes.  The best of them obviously go to UM, OSU, etc. but you'd have to think that even a program like that has kids that are undersized, not quite fast enough, etc. that could be nice D3 players.  It's similar to JCU mining Iggy for talent for years.  Sure the best kids at Iggy are going D1, but they also have a bunch of kids beyond that who are good players too.  I'm sure that's what Mount's thinking is with Cass Tech.

Ditto, my point exactly. Which has been my frustration with good Stark and Summit County players not panning out. Many are big school kids who IMO don't want to wait for playing time.

It looks like Luke Poorman continues to be committed to God and God's plan for him at UMU.

Mount's done pretty well with grabbing the "too small" or "too slow" St Ed's kids lately.

having a coach devoted to only recruiting seems to be paying dividends for Mount.

Must be interesting to be a d3 recruiter, it's such a fine line between this kids good and he's too good he's gonna go D1 or D2.

D1 kids are pretty evident, Mount's not poaching many FBS or FCS kids.  But Mount can compete with a lot of D2 schools for financial aid and history of winning, etc

I think his humility led him to prefer "LK" - but you can use his formal name if you wish. ;D 8-)
