Concerning the fair catch on kickoff rule, does the rule state that a kick that makes contact with
the turf and goes 10 yards cannot be faircaught like trick onsidekicks were? If so, teams probably drvekick the ball through a gap and still give up less field position. I know the rule is injury driven but you can just not field the ball and let it go for a touchback already, or let it go out of bounds. Im not in favor of this rule change. How bout you?

In High School they will now penalize the Direct Kick into the Ground that then bounces up over the Return Teams Heads.  Safety issue with KOR guys getting laid out trying to field the ball.  You can still onside it, but not the direct kick into the ground pop up.

I don't have a problem with the new rule(s) for safety. I have heard rumors that there is a desire to get rid of kickoffs all together. Not a fan of that because it removes an important part of the game. Giving a team a "safe out" like a fair catch on kickoff is fine. It's safer in terms of collisions and doesn't penalize a team for using it since it counts as a touch back. However, I am not a fan of a team using it on every kickoff. IF - a big if - Mount had kicked off and the kick team did not even run down the field it would not have mattered since the returner was calling for the fair catch as soon as the ball left the tee. Watch the coverage and use it when you need it. If every team employs the faircatch on every kick - then why even kick off?

As far as crediting RHIT for Mount playing the 3rd - I can't do that (I am sure the RHIT coaches are concerned that I am not pleased by their effort ;D). Mount played the third because of Mount, not because of anything RHIT did. The line looked out of sync on assignments (and RHIT wasn't causing this with alignment and blitzes), the passing game was just off, and the penalties were...MOUNTing up. Had Fulford hit Hill on the 2 deep in the first half - halftime score is 38-0 and the starters play a series in the third and then sit.

I agree that Fulford's passes last year lack loft...but they seemed flatter on Saturday. Passes to WR 15 yards downfield looked like the target was 25 yards downfield. The one deep to Hill was still rising 30 yards down field...like he was throwing it for 50. Maybe he was just amped up and let it fly but he did that on several. The one nice one was to Herrington on the sideline in the second. Aside from that he was errant on his passes. Bye week will work that out. On to BW....the highest scoring team in the OAC  ???

National Federation State High School Association last year added some new rules for High School football games. They added new rules 2-24-10 (NEW), 6-1-11 (NEW), 6-1 PENALTY:in doing so they  Added a new definition for a pop-up kick and specifies a dead ball penalty for a pop-up kick as Kira & Jaxon's Dad described above.

However as I searched the Internet to learn more on how this rule is enforced from articles I read some sates give a 5 yard penalty with possession going to receiving team while other states have 5 yard penalty and rekick.

Aperently the pop-up kick definition is for kickoff where the kicked ball bounced once before going high in the air.  If the kicker strikes the ball so that the ball bounces more than once before it goes high in the air then this kickoff is legal. I found one site that called a kangaroo kick.

I can only imagine all the fun MUC57 will have with the term kangaroo.

Kangaroo was the name of some military officer, I believe he was a captain. I was in the Air Force but he may have been in another branch. And you thought I wouldn't know.

I remember something about a guy that always wore green jeans. I can't think of his name. Maybe it'll come to me later. Go Mount! ☠🏈

I came across this on MSN https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/kansas-professor-argues-school-should-drop-football-program/ar-BBMNE1G?li=BBnbfcL

Long story short: Kansas lost...again...this time to FCS Nicholls State, cash strapped university, why have football? Reading this I thought of.....Earlham. Not Wilmington who is terrible...but Earlham who is 3 and 78 in their last 81 games and got Monkeystomped by Wilmington  ???. This was a game between Earlham 3 wins and 78 losses since 2010 and Wilmington 5 wins and 76 loses during same period. To add insult to...well more insult I guess, Earlham scored with 1:40 left in the game. One minute and 40 seconds from getting shutout by Wilmington. If anything these teams were as evenly matched as one could find and it was a one-sided blowout.

Question: At what point does a school say - "it just doesn't make sense to have a football team"? Follow-up: what current teams should seriously consider saying this?

I have to wonder, as well, when is it just silly to continue to field a sport that costs so much money and draws as little interest as football does at some small schools and colleges.  I would argue that it makes more sense to concentrate recruiting and pushing  less expensive sports, trying to make a positive impact there.
I see many high schools with less than 25 kids on the football team, one area team had 17 last year.  Football is so expensive and dying a slow death at many high schools.  The new high school "safety rules" are an attempt, I feel, to keep some parents and kids interested in football.
If I were a school with  less than 20-25 kids, I would drop the program and allow students to play via open enrollment to other schools if they desired.
Doesn't Ohio allow schools without football to start basketball practice earlier?

I think roster size is one part of the decision. Occidental has less than 40 last year and cancelled the season - but I think it was because they had no Oline left. Earlham has 40-ish listed and only 6 or 7 Oline. I know Oxy is back this year but they have 46 and 7 Oline. Not much depth for sure. But aside from roster size - shouldn't wins and losses influence the decision? I mean getting 60 kids out every year is great BUT averaging .333 wins a year (Earlham) or .555 (Wilmington) you would think at some point the school would decide to spend elsewhere. Maybe when one of those teams start hosting other teams homecoming or Hall of Fame games (gotta have a win on those days)? I mean if Earlham looks and says "Huh, a 10 game schedule and we have 5 home games. Why are our 5 home games homecoming for our opponents?"

I saw this on Wilmington website: https://www.wilmington.edu/vision/

School is running a deficit of $2M+ and is cutting faculty and staff positions and pulling from endowment to essentially break even.  The Vision 2020 does not paint a nice picture for Wilmington. So my question to them would be "If you are currently living beyond your means, as is stated, why are programs being funded that provide no return on the investment?". They say every expense was reviewed and it was not possible to reduce their operational budget - did this include athletics? Sorry but gotta feel for the faculty and staff getting the axe because of budget cuts while looking at the state of the athletic programs.

The University of Akron is a prime example of a football program, even when they are good, that simply doesn'y attract interest from the community.  The faculty at UA has long complained about the cost of the new football stadium and the football team. It was more than a mistake to finance that empty stadium, it was an unmitigated financial disaster they cannot extricate themselves from.
At least it's not taxpayer money spent at small private schools.  Athletic programs attract students. Mount Union has 28 freshman soccer players this year for example.

Watched part of the JV game today. Played Hocking College, a Jr. College in Nelsonville, Ohio. From their size, we thought they might be a Dll school before we found out.
Just drove thru campus and asked a fan the final score.he was pretty sure it was 60-8, favor of the Raiders. Sounds reasonable since when I left, at the end of the 1st quarter, the score was 27-0.
Guess we'll find out for sure. ☠🏈

I just saw a posting that apperntly the of Purple Raider JV team scored another TD on  Hocking College to end up winning 67-8.  Another posting seemed to indicate Hocking College's only score came as a result of a blocked punt run back.  The Twitter posting also indicated that JV team is scheduled to travel to JCU next Saturday at 12pm!  This should be an interesting game.

Akron is a good example although UA got into a hole when Proenza (King Louis) went on his spree starting in 2000. Infocision was a whole new mistake. The cost of buying all the property owners out, rezoning, building the thing and all the stuff that goes with a downtown stadium...and then no one showed up for games. I found it comical that UA actually said that students didn't go to the games at the Rubber Bowl because of the distance. They ran shuttles to and from and charged $0 for student admission.

As far as Wimington and Earlham go - I am not sure the student enrollment would take that much of hit without football. How many of the 46 on the roster went there to play football, as opposed to how many decided to go there and then to play football? Maybe enrollment drops by what 15? How many really figured playing football into the decision of picking that school?
