Their last losing season was in 1977 when they were 4-5.

Mount's offensive coordinator sucked that year.

But what would you expect?  He was the SWIMMING coach, ferchrissakes!

QuoteHarvard, Notre Dame and Central College (Iowa) remain tied for second on the all-time consecutive seasons list, with 42 apiece. None of those streaks are current, however. Second on the active seasons list is University of Mount Union, in Alliance, Ohio. Mount Union last had a losing season in 1979.
Congratulations.

Mount Union was 7-2 in 1979.  4-4-1 in 1978.

Their last losing season was in 1977 when they were 4-5.

1977 was my Freshman year.  I worked on Saturdays at Alliance Country Club, but they let me off for Homecoming so that I could take a local Sebring chick to the game (NOT my Wife).  MUC beat Denison rather effectively that day.  Remember sitting next to a Denison Mom who's Son was taken off with an injury, and trying to console her (what did I know?). I had a couple of classmates on the team.  I remember silver helmets.
MUC57 was there wearing a lavender leisure suit, I am sure!
For Dick Ross, they did trash the "Big Woo" a couple of weeks before.

What's wrong with a lavender leisure suit? It was either that or the lime green one. Hey, I looked pretty spiffy! Interesting that you remembered. I did have a kinda rose colored leisure suit too.

I feel compelled to discuss yesterday's section half.

That was the absolute worst performance I have ever seen from Mount Union backups. We hear about "next man up". When a player graduates or is injured, we go to the "next man up". Very often, history shows that there is little change in performance. We also go to the backups when Mount has built a big lead. The other team may score a TD or stop a Raider drive in, what is called, garbage time. But no big deal. But to give up 4 TDs is inexcusable.
I understand it's good to give these guys playing time. After all, they represent the future. After yesterday, the future doesn't look so good. I know! I know! Hopefully they'll improve over time. Maybe I'm premature in my comments. But I didn't see the usual results from a group of young up and comers in that second half.
I have a feeling the backups may be in for a long week. Coach Kehres could not have been pleased.
From here on, the starters may have to play more. Opponents should be getting tougher. We cannot afford to have a repeat of yesterday.
Our coaching staff is one of, if not THE best coaching staffs in the country. I'm confident they will deal with the situation.
There! I had to spout off. And now, back to normal stuff! Go Raiders! Beat the Mules! 😃 🍺 ❗️

Re: Dlll playoff attendance

Just for the hell of it, I took a look at attendance figures for yesterday's games. I know they may not be perfectly accurate but they're all I have.

Centre @ Mount Union  1211
Berry @ UMHB.  2615
Whitworth @ St John's  1345
RPI @ Brockport.  724
St Norbert @ UW-Whitewater.  2303
Johns Hopkins @ Frostburg St.  623
Bethel @ North Central.  1103
Randolph-Macon @ Muhlenberg.  2931

This is Dlll football. This is football in it's purest form. No scholarships. Not much future in the NFL. Out of 250 teams, counting NESCAC too, only 16 were left. The best in the country?
Now. The question is - where was everybody? Some possibilities are:
     The weather was bad.
     Thanksgiving weekend.
     General apathy.
     Who's Dlll?
Big stadiums like UMHB and UWW must look strange being mostly empty.
So why did I point this out? I don't know. I guess I just wonder why more people don't chose to watch quality football teams battle it out for a national championship. Any comments? Go Everybody!

I can say that the weather sucked at Brockport and Frostburg.  Rained most of the game in Brockport and there was a freezing rain issue early on Saturday morning that likely cut down the traveling Hopkins fans.

Dr. Acula

Thanksgiving is the biggest reason.  You're going to have no students really because they're all at home plus a lot of folks in general are traveling.  Reason #2 is probably the combo of weather and free streaming video.

Round 2 of the playoffs is always a bad attendance week.  The holiday weekend is undefeated against D-III playoff games.  Expect an uptick this weekend with everybody back on campuses and the allure of quarterfinal games.  I'll be at Hopkins this Saturday to get a look at who is going to Alliance for the semifinal.

Thanks for the info. That certainly explains why those two had the smallest crowds. 😃 ❗️

More on attendance

I realize Thanksgiving is the biggest reason for low attendance. Students are gone, people are traveling. I was also thinking ahead. I see low attendance figures in lots of the playoff games. I'll wait until this weekends games and, maybe talk more about it. Time for a cold one! Mult noroc. (Ask your Romanian friends)

I'm sure OSU/Michigan game playing at the same time didn't help either for the Mount game in addition to the holiday weekend and weather.

As to the comment about Mount Union's backups, they'll be fine. I was worried about depth too until you look at the starting lineup. Many defensive players are Juniors and sophomores, which means they'll be back next year and it gives those freshmen another year of experience. The average American male doesn't peak physically until mid to later 20's. Their bodies will develop with more time in a good strength and conditioning program. This also gives the coaching staff there opportunity to see which positions they really need to recruit hard. Dline and Oline is always difficult to recruit in NEO because many of those guys we used to get are D2 level recruits. I'm sure they're going to go after some high quality QBs. I like the potential of Moore and Homol, but they've got to get better.

Excited for another week like Purple Raiders football!!!

57 Buddy,
The kids are gone is one big reason but I wonder how the NCAA controls the gate and what kind of seats season ticket holders can get etc. etc?
Just gave myself a headache :)

The other 57

Mount guarantees season ticket holders the same seats for the playoff. Any extra seats they ask for may not be near them, depending on availability. Don't think the NCAA "controls" the gate.
For your headache - take 2 aspirins or, my personal choice, drink a lot. I wish the Johnnies the very best this weekend! Go Johnnies! 😃 🍺 ❗️
