What in the HE double hockey sticks is Fulford doing throwing into double coverage. He and Mount are damn lucky the Mules didn't pick him off several more times.  :P

I thought the same thing! For the most efficient QB in D2 or D3 hia decision making was very questionable today. I didn't understand those throws either

Injuries are definitely a factor for the Raiders...Ruth pulled hammy, slow return...Fulford is no where near 75 or 80%...Harrington did not play in second half, I heard he got banged up big time...White is limping most of season..These are all KEY people.
Pass defense, other than Berry got burned a lot today..Mules dropped one sure TD, and possibly another...Mules QB was very inconsistent and not accurate at all.  Receivers were open, he missed or they dropped.
Defense was stellar against run..Williams a big day, Pastor a good day, #97  a good day, too.

The problem I see is that Mount is not nearly as deep offensively as they normally are and losses they are suffering are critical. Hill has the dropsies and needs to clean that up.  Petro was a beast when needed most.

Additionally, I did not really see much in the intermediate passing game (that connected, anyway). Everything looked to be the WR screens (which were completely telegraphed and then snuffed out), or shots deep (often into double coverage). There were few "win the down" plays where Mount gets an easy completion for 4-7 yards and stays on schedule, or maybe the receiver breaks a tackle and gets a few more.

Pretty sure Herrington played in the 2nd half. He had two catches in a row, with the team headed North.  The second one was negated by illegal man downfield. I think it was the 4th Quarter.  Both were 12-15 yard posts with Herrington going low, making sliding catches.

3rd quarter, but otherwise, that's right, and one of the few times they went with the short-intermediate easy stuff.

From the box score:

1st and 10 at MTU16   D'Angelo Fulford pass complete to Luke Herrington for 15 yards to the MTU31.
1st and 10 at MTU31   D'Angelo Fulford pass complete to Luke Herrington for 15 yards to the MTU46, PENALTY MTU ineligible man down field 5 yards to the MTU26, NO PLAY.

There was only 1 other pass completion by the Raiders for more than 3 yards the rest of the game (the other being the 30-yarder to Haynes).

It looked like he was locked on Hill no matter what. Other receivers were open on those throws.

The play that Hill fumbled had JEM standing all alone in the middle of the field - maybe 8 to 10 yards from LOS. Saw guys in the flats open as well. I think without Ruth he just didn't consider another option.

On the plus side - not much film in the last 2 weeks worth looking at from the Offense. Well unless they want to see alot of Petro in the wildcat. Something tells me Hopkins can figure that one out.

IIRC, there has been some discussion on this board in the recent past about website recap spin by vanquished Mount Union opponents.

Now let's be clear:  This has nothing to do with the players or coaches.  To repeat, this has NOTHING to do with the players or coaches.

Having said that, I would like to point out that Muhlenberg's recap after today's game makes no mention whatsoever of either of the following two words:

     1)  Josh

     2)  Petruccelli

If we are looking at the same article, to be fair, they did not mention a single Mount player by name. I figured they might have mentioned Fulford by name (whom they bottled up pretty nicely and picked off once), but he is only mentioned as the "Mount Union quarterback."

YES! There was one play I remember specifically where Herrington was open down the middle but he threw to Hill down the sideline incomplete. The whole offense (petro excluded) looked out of sync. Felt a lot like the JCU game.

Have to give some credit to the Mules though. I think their D is at least JCU caliber if not better and they did a nice job of staying committed to the run game late, where a lot of UMU opponents give up and just keep throwing.

Also, is anyone else super excited to see a semi final game at Mount Union stadium for the first time since 2015!!!

Sorry, but I completely missed Harrington and asked about him after the game and was told he got banged up...my bad.

Against lesser opponents or single coverage it might have made sense to throw it up and let Ruth and Hill beat the other guy (worst case scenario, it gets picked but the defense gets an immediate stop), but as competition improves I hope Kehres drives it into Fulford's head to take the underneath stuff more often. No need to hit the home run on every play and put the team behind the sticks if it goes incomplete.

And, wow, it has been that long, hasn't it? Hopefully the fans stay loud even if the game is close late.

The ineligible man down field was called a quick hitter so most likely a receiver wasn't covered on the line which wasted some good momentum UNU has going.

After watching the St John's quarterback throw the ball today, I forgot what it's like to have a QB that can throw the ball into tight coverage over the middle. Fulford stares down his targets and doesn't read coverage great in my opinion. Our Oline just dominated today. When you put Petro in the backfield all alone and say stop... And they don't, that's a good day! Defense played very very well.

I'm telling you guys, this Purple Raider offense can run the ball and play defense, but to win the Stagg Bowl this year, we need a consistent passing game against good teams. I'm not giving up, just saying I need to see the Fulford we saw against ONU type of work.

A loss to the Mules would have been hard to swallow - a loss to Hopkins would be unacceptable. Not a fan of some of the crap they pulled in the last game against Mount. Roll Raiders~Roll!
Forgive me, but what happened last game between the two teams?

I think a lot of it hinges on Jared Ruth, both times the Mount passing game has faltered this year it's been when Ruth wasn't playing. Obviously it's not good that our O relies so much on one receiver but it truly looks like a different offense when he plays.

Raider 68

Few thoughts after attending the game today;

- As mentioned before not having Ruth as a weapon was huge (hope he is ready for the semi's

- The Mules defense was decent

- Give Josh the game ball

- The play calling was well below Mount's standards as was the execution.

- Hill was not the same player today

- The Defense was top notch again, which the Raider's will need next Saturday

- Fulford was not in sync at all. Not only was he off, the was not seeing the field.

- I thought Mount had a tight end- never gets the ball.

- Cudos to the Raider punter.

- No love lost for Johns's Hopkins

- If the Raiders win on Saturday,  IMHO, I think they could see UWW not UMHB, but we'll see  :)

It is truly bizarre to write an extensive recap of a game without once mentioning the name of an opposition player, especially a running back who gained 219 yards rushing.  And the only references to "the Mount Union quarterback" noted his sub-standard play.

I'm painfully aware that home team recaps are usually slanted heavily towards the home team but this is Baghdad Bob stuff.
