wow, I bet mount will get a few from this.

I wonder how many of Malone's players could actually make the 2-deep at UMU.
Spank me if I am wrong, Girls, but wasn't there a Malone player in one of the college all star games this year?
(Kinda a side note to this whole thing, IF right.)

JCUStreaks70

Was it because you're JCU and I'm UMU? I think in times like this, we have to be unified. No democrats and republicans, no Catholics and Protestants, no white and black, no Raiders and Blue Streaks! Out of beer is no laughing matter. We help each other. Forget our differences. We live together on this planet.
I will today, on my birthday, have a toast to you. I can only hope you will be filled with goodness and caring for your fellow beer drinker. If you ever run out, I'll be there for you. Unless it's JCU / UMU game time, in which case you're on your own! 🍺 🍺  ;D

Old MUC'er -
My apologies for a belated Happy Birthday!
My also is getting old, mixed up (Wife says), and forgetting things (WIFE says ... sheesh).  Next time up home (Sebring), I got your beer and wings tab at Tailgators.
Despite age, I like it that the planes that I crewed were "new" when you were in the Air Force! ... LOL!!!

BillyRayJimBob

Thanks "old" buddy.
Wait a minute! The planes you crewed were NEW when I was in the Air Force? That's kinda like you know you're getting old when watching a parade and, as the antique autos go by, you realize you bought one when it was new!
Haven't heard from you for awhile. Glad you're still around. Go Raiders!   ;D
I'm old! I get mixed up and I forget things! Go Everybody! 🏈 ☠

The mistake Malone made was starting football in the first place.  They were fine with the programs they had, but someone felt that being a college in northeast Ohio, they had to have football.  Not so, and it lasted longer than it should have.  The fact that they never attempted to put a facility on campus, playing away from the school, made it difficult for students to get to games and I don't believe it ever caught on  with the kids.   It has to assimilate into the campus and other college activities and it never could or did.  I would not be surprised if Walsh ends up in a similar situation.  I can't understand why Walsh doesn't erect bleachers at their beautiful practice field which would bring the games right across the street from all the dorms and draw kids and community members. Tis a real shame.

As soon as Malone went D2 the writing was on the wall IMO.  They barely supported the program as a second rate NAIA program.

I listened to the entire Joe Palmisano show and it was pretty interesting.  For anyone that didn't know, Joe was the first ever HC at Malone when the program began in 1993.  He had on a couple of his captains from those first teams as well as AD Charlie Grimes and Fred Thomas as I mentioned.  One of the things that came up more than once is the relationship the school always had with its football program i.e. did the school truly want a football program in the first place.  It was mentioned, correctly, that football has brought much needed diversity to the student body.  But the aspect I hadn't considered which Thomas pointed out is that an environment like Malone can and has changed the trajectory of the lives of many kids who come from broken homes, tough backgrounds, etc. and that it's a shame that won't happen any longer.  Walsh and Malone are similar in a lot of ways, but Malone's mission is always front and center.  Kids know that when they go there.

For anyone that wants to listen to that show here is the link.  The segment with Thomas starts around 49:30.

HScoach

My only surprise is that it took so long for Malone to shut it down.   Football at Malone was a mistake in the first place.

I feel for the players and coaches that are screwed.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Okay so at least one then  ;D

I might be a bad person but as it relates to football should Mount fans be glad Malone shut down football? I'm sure they made recruiting a little tougher in this area...

At one point in the Thomas interview he mentioned that prior to ending the program Friday the school had told him they were cutting his scholarships by 21k and cutting one of his asst positions.  When they transitioned to D2 initially I remember them having issues getting approved because they weren't funding athletics nearly well enough.  It's a small, strict Evangelical school.  Football, especially D2 football, is expensive.  You have to think that either football was a mistake, going D2 was a mistake...or possibly both.

WRMUalum13

So, my question now is if Malone is facing such a deficit why don't they drop down to D3 in their other sports. Wouldnt that save them a decent amount of money in scholarships?

I'm just not sure how a school of their size benefits by offering scholarship athletics at all. Where is the ROI?

Bishopleftiesdad

When all the ohio NAIA schools were going to NCAA many thought Malone would go D3. There profile better matches the D3 schools. However not sure if their was a conference for them.  It was a small surprise that they went d2.
Not sure what conference they would fit in now. Geography,  I think would be the OAC. Maybe the PAC?

Pat Coleman

You may have accounted for this already, but Malone would have to move for all sports, not just all but football.

Not sure which comment you were responding to  but yes, I think they should move down to d3 in all sports, I don't understand the ROI for them being in D2

That would certainly make sense, however, it doesn't help otherwise with regard to football, since they have dropped the program, not wanting it regardless of NAIA or D3, which fits with what  Dr. A and HScoach have mentioned. :(

Sure,  my comment wasn't about saving football it was about saving money overall, just go d3, however I can understand it could be tough if they couldn't find a conference.
