There is no doubt that coaching at the high school level is a labor of love.   There is no way that you (or anyone) coach high school sports for the money.  Follow your passion

I don't get to post nearly as much as I used to (never thought I'd be "that" guy) but I can't really talk about it publicly anywhere else so I thought I'd post here.

I've been coaching high school ball for 14 years now and have spent five of those years (including that last four consecutive) as a varsity offensive coordinator.  What we have lacked in size and speed we've also lacked in depth and athleticism yet we managed to win 2 of the last 3 region titles and I've managed to have a top ten offense offense in our division (about 50 teams) in the state over the time.  I think I do a decent job but there's always more to learn.

My HC just took a job at a school with better financial support, a larger student population and better facilities.  Logistically I cannot go with although that is what he wants and I wish I could make happen.  It's 45 minutes away from the school I work at and the opposite direction of my home.  Further adding to the complication, I'm in year twelve as an educator where I opened the high school that I have been teaching at.  All three programs (current football school, HC's new school and my workplace) are in the same region/conference.

I am told I am the top choice to replace my HC at my current football school.  I have also been hounded for four consecutive offseasons to come back to be OC at the school I teach at.  My concern there is that I worked with the head coach there when we were both position coaches and there are definitely concerns over fit.  As a recently divorced father of three daughters, I am swimming in my own head over this decision and if there's one thing I hate as a coach, it's not having a plan mapped out and knowing what comes next.  I also serve as a varsity assistant basketball coach and jv boys volleyball coach at the school I teach at.  If I take the HC position where I coordinate, I most certainly would have to relinquish one or both of those duties which won't be easy as I've been coaching basketball for 12 seasons now and volleyball for 5.

Sorry to ramble, I just can't talk about this on more overt social media platforms and guess I needed to vent or get it out there and read any thoughts or feedback.
Just from what you posted I would go for the head coach positon if you have a desire to be the head man.  It also means staying at your same school and less change for the family too.

Awesome opportunity for you reality check. You've got options many people wish they had.
Best advice I can give is to set aside entirely quiet, alone time every day and put it to prayer.
I realize I'm risking the eye roll here, but I wouldn't say it if it hasn't helped me.

RC,

Good to hear from an old friend.

All I can offer is perspective from my coaching life.  Working for an HC that you respect and like is wonderful.   Coaching for one that you don't is worse than horrible.  That's the primary reason I put down the whistle and picked up the microphone.

Good luck with your decision and the daughters.  I had only 1 and she was plenty.  Though now it's cool as she gave us 2 grandkids!
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

RC,

Just DO IT baby!  you never want to have to ponder "what if".

Good luck!

Many years ago, I wrote for a coaching trade magazine, and I wrote a cover story on Coaches as CEOs in football. The upshot is that for a lot of these guys, the biggest difference isn't in the game-day related stuff. It's all the other things that go into running a successful program that present the biggest adjustment. I have no personal experience, but from what those coaches told me, it's important to understand that aspect of the move, and embrace it.

I have at least applied for the HC position.  We will see what happens next.  And the HC where I teach has been hounding me for a meeting.  I have to explore the position where I currently coach first.

Thank you everyone for chiming in and offering support and advice!

Your thoughtful spelling out your situation and the decision process you are going through was excellent work.  Taking time to write this out so that others can understand had the added benefit of helping you better understand. The advice you got from all was great

The only thing I would add is to follow your heart and go for the the right fit. Even the one of the greatest D3 football coaches of all time knew when it was time to move on when the fit wasn't right.
