MUC57 -- I think a month ago someone might have considered transferring to a school which was going to play this fall, but that would have been a fool's errand. Nobody is going to play this fall.

I'll be interested to see how many participate in actual spring competition. I suspect we see a lot of very short schedules, like 2-3 games. But that would be fun to follow.

I think this is right on the money. I believe coaches will use this as an elaborate spring camp. I do think they will take the games seriously, though. They always do.

Is there no chance of a full spring football schedule including playoffs?

A full season with playoffs?  Play would have to start in February.

Sounds good. But what about St. John's, Wheaton, ............?
Therein lies the problem. But it sounds good.

Very good point, I suppose that would be very difficult considering weather

I was imagining starting in March but then the season would go all the way until June if you did a full playoffs, then there's basically no off season.

Capital could go with Pentellos. Although they better check the history books and see which side of the Civil War Rocky fought on. I mean he was active during that era too, I believe   ;D

In all seriousness, I'm surprised Crusaders is the first mascot to fall. In my small brain it is far from the most offensive.

Wheaton let go of its Crusaders about 20 years ago. Alvernia did the same more recently.

In the case of Wheaton (IL), they had many graduates who were missionaries, and feared for those in Muslim countries, where 'Crusaders' is quite understandably a 'no-no' (at least, that is the story I've heard).

It was actually more a matter of political correctness due to cultural shift. Wheaton's connection to the medieval conflicts over the Holy Land in terms of the nickname was secondhand at best; Wheaton took the nickname because evangelistic meetings in America up until a generation or so ago were often termed "crusades" (it's especially true in the case of America's most famous evangelist, Wheaton alumnus Billy Graham). But the nickname presents a bad look today, regardless of its origin, since the medieval Crusades are now commonly regarded as one of the most unsavory chapters in Christian history.

Missionaries of other religions (including Christianity) within Muslim countries are practically nonexistent.

Quote from: USee on July 13, 2020, 06:33:21 PMNot sure how many Muslims living in other countries knew where Wheaton College was, let alone their mascot name.

Exactly.

If I'm reading this correctly, which is a BIG if, are you saying the spring season could only be 2 or 3 games?  Total?  If that's the case, why even play at all.  Going thru pre-season practice and all the work that goes into it doesn't seem worth the effort for a couple games.  I was anticipating a very close to full regular season without a playoff, but not 2 or 3 total.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

I guess in my head I was thinking something like a 9 game OAC season with no playoffs starting in early March.  Perhaps that's unrealistic though.

I am not sure student-athletes choose to use a year of eligibility to participate in that.

Good point, Pat.  Also, do you think that would even be offered as an option?

Just my personal opinion so far, without having talked to too many people about it, but I would be really surprised if we get to whatever minimum number of teams playing five games is needed to demand a spring championship tournament. And I would be surprised if the Division III membership signed off on having one.
