Looks like Cap will now be known as the Comets after scrapping the Crusaders name.  Don't know that we even have any Cap posters regularly around these days, but I saw it on the local news so I figured I'd share.

I don't get the change. I mean Indians,  Redskins,  Redmen (my high school nickname) and the like...change them. It's time and we all know it (sorry but it's true). Crusaders...idk. That one I dont get. Then again maybe there is another reason for the change.

Based on this article from the Dispatch it sounds like students, faculty and alumni thought it was outdated and were opposed to its connection with the crusades.  Cap did a 15 month process to get feedback/do a study, take suggestions for a new name and then let people vote on the new name.  Other final options were Wolves, Hawks and United.  I think Wolves would have been cool.

The Dolan family messed up big time. They could have changed the name 2 or 3 years ago the The Tribe and almost everyone would have been happy. Fans have been calling the the team The Tribe for years. The name they picked, the Guardians is a mistake. After the announced the new name many told them there already was a sports team called the Guardian in the area.  The Indians reported the new name was associated with statues of guardians on an old bridge in Cleveland. The public reported back that the guardian figures on the bridge are for pegan false gods and not religious symbols but anti-religion. I suspect not everyone see that connection, but professional organizations are supposed to do proper due diligence on name changing.

Musky only trails JCU 14-7 at half.  Looks like the fish scored on a pick 6 and have mustered very little offense so probably too early to tune into the 2nd half when it starts.

Etta and ONU are locked up in a 3 point game.  10-7 ONU.

BW is up 44-0 at half on the Comets.

Mount is drumming Ott 42-0 at half.  Plunk with 228 yds and 4 TD.  Petro and Parker are running at will pretty much.

D3fanboy

great to see Petro and Parker both running wild and Plunk throwing deep and the defense pitches a shutout.  But I guess Mount should be hanging 84 or so on unmatched teams

I don't think there is a single voter who would be affected by that, if that's what you're implying.

While margins of victory do have a part to play in top 25 balloting, the effect is definitely asymptotic and (for me at least) the impact of another point scored has reached zero somewhere way before 84.

I would not vote any support for a team that "hangs" 84 on anyone.  You can avoid running up a score. Ohio high schools have a running clock after there is a 30 point deficit.  I doubt the NCAA would ever consider, but 42 would be my number.

They do, but I have watched our voters work over the past 19 seasons, in which Mount Union has pretty consistently *not* hung 84 on anyone.

Valparaiso also changed their name from Crusaders to Beacons.  According to Valpo, apparently Crusaders has been embraced by hate groups.  That's all I can figure, in and of itself I am with you, don't really understand it.  But with that explanation, I get it.

Mary Hardin-Baylor is the last team in D-III with the nickname (and in football, they generally go by Cru). In the past 20 years, Wheaton (Ill.) and Susquehanna moved away from Crusaders nicknames as well.
