Sad news this week in the tragic death of Capital University soph defensive end Michael Hooffstetter from Ohio, who drowned in Lake Michigan at Pere Marquette Beach here in Muskegon, Michigan this past Sunday. My sincerest sympathy to his family,  friends, and Capital football teammates, coaches, and staff. What a shame. A severe reminder of the dangers of swimming in the Great Lakes. There have been many drownings here in Lake Michigan in west Michigan this summer from the Indiana/Michigan dunes to mid state area.  To all, please be careful, smart, and use common sense when at the lakes, wherever you might be visiting.

I'm not overly worried about Mount. I trust this coaching staff to make the necessary adjustments to be successful. There will be good recruits joining the program, be coached up, learn the expectations and put the team in a position to be successful. The offense won't skip a beat, but coaches always feel like they could call a better game plan. There's always going to be questioning when you lose.

My take here is that UMHB, NCC and the UW- schools all have DUDES on defense that Mount isn't getting anymore. The size and speed are just different at the DL and LB positions and those guys that they used to get are now going to D2 schools or walking on at D1 schools. This means that the Mount Union coaching staff has to make great play calls more often than not to make up for that. That's my opinion anyway.

I can't wait to see what a determined team does this fall and love watching the process develop.

It'll be interesting to see which team comes as the full season challengers. Lately,  it was JCU and Marietta. Are BW, ONU and Heidelberg going to maintain success for a full season? I see BW making a push in the OAC.

I don't have high hopes for any good regular season games for Mount this fall, but it's going to be interesting to see who emerges behind Mount as the contender.  No one is jumping off the page at me as someone who is clearly #2 and has a good shot at going 9-1.  However, it's hard to gauge with the uncertainty around what seniors from last fall come back across the OAC with the extra COVID year available.

It looks like all of BW's All-OAC players were seniors last fall.  How many are coming back this fall?  Berg looks positioned fairly well in that Sims was 2nd team All-OAC QB and he was only a soph last fall so returning a good QB is always a good starting point.  They also have multiple All-OAC guys on both sides of the ball returning so I think Berg should be solid.  JCU I assume will be good, but the HC/QB turnover has me interested in seeing how this fall plays out for the Streaks.

if there is one thing almost as certain as Mount going 9-0 in the OAC, it's Berg and BW dropping a game to the lower end of the conference and removing themselves from relevancy by seasons end

Listening to the local radio talking about OSU's offense and it felt eerily familiar.  They mentioned the strong QB and WR play, but said it comes down to when you're playing your best opponents do you have the ability to move the pile and pick up 2 yards the ugly way to move the chains.  Seems that's a key question in Columbus and Alliance.  Hopefully the answer for both is yes.

So the question for Mount is, who has been recruited to become the next Kmich, Moore or Pugh? Need that big fast
running back for offensive balance. ???

Mount had that ability last year, but for some reason did not.  A little less stubbornness, and more creativity would benefit the Purple Raiders immensely in games vs bigtime opponents

In plain words, you mean coaching. Coaching or lack thereof cost the Raiders against NC a few years back. Not real confident that we have the coaching group necessary for Mount to reach the Stagg again.  ::)

Sad to report that MUC57 has passed away. I will miss his kindness and sportsmanship.

I am very sad to hear this. What a shame.  For sure, he was a very kind, considerate, and diplomatic man, even when he had a difference of opinion with fellow posters. He always had a positive attitude, was a loyal supporter of this site,  always projected a good example of class and, as you said, sportsmanship. We all knew he was quite up there in years as he often shared that with us. Yet, even though I knew this time was probably nearing, as that is just "life's journey and happens to us all, deep down, I hoped it was yet a long time away. I, too, will miss him posting here with his levity and enthusiasm for DIII football and what it stands for. Thanks for letting us know.

For years I looked forward to MUC57's posts.  He brightened my days.  The word Gentleman gets thrown around too much, in too many contexts these days, but he was a Gentleman in the classic sense:  considerate, jovial, polite, big hearted.   And MUC''s biggest supporter.  The Purple Raiders gave him great joy.  Rest with the Purple Angels, good man.

RB was 86 years old and passed on Friday July 29, 2022. He last posted on 6-14-22 and was in attendance at the dedication of
Kehres stadum. A Mount Alum and great supporter of Mount Union and especially Raider football. He will be truly missed by everyone. His obituary is in The Alliance Review, www.the-review.com.

I always looked forward to seeing him at the games.  He had a great sense of humor and especially enjoyed teasing my wife when she got a little loud in voicing her opinion of a play or a call on the field.  We will miss him.  Rest In Peace my friend.
