I'm going to my first Mount game of the year today. Are there any good tailgating spots at JCU?  It has been a few years since I last ventured to JCU and I'm not sure if the old spots still exist.

I haven't been to a game this year, but I do know we're in the process of a major campus enhancement project, so some of the lots are torn up/being built over. I'm sure you'll still be able to find something though! Probably just not in the usual spots!

Have fun! Unfortunately I won't be there either... 2 under 2 and in the Chicago suburbs made this year impossible for me to head back. I want to say good luck, but......

Quick takeaway from the game, Mount Union is good. Very good. I truly think Mount and North Central are heads above the rest of the division, especially considering John Carroll result vs. Whitewater.

Surprisingly the guys from University Heights didn't put up much of a challenge.
Let's hope there is not a let down next Saturday vs BW.
Keep last year in the back of your mind while the BW DB keeps that football on the front of his helmet.

Total left turn here:  On any given day in practice, how many points does the offense of the University of Southern California score against its defense?  A thousand?  Two thousand?  Ten million?

Raider 68

The Raiders showed a lot today. The Defense remains one of the best in D3 and the offense opened the playbook more
today and the execution was crisp. One more game before the playoffs, then the second season begins and we'll see
how the bracket looks for Mount. It looks like a possible rematch with NC, but there are some real good teams in the way of that. :)

Quick thoughts on today:

I watched the entire game which I think is a first this year for me.  It was an odd feeling.  I was never nervous Mount wouldn't win but I also think JCU played far better than the score showed.

Game ball has to go to the O line.  The big boys up front set the tone and the run game was dominant all day.  It was fun seeing the fresh legs burst from Parker today.  8, 7, 8 totes for Parker, Echeverry and Williams.  Their depth is a luxury heading into the playoffs in a couple weeks.

Parker seems to be at his best against JCU.  His shiftiness and pass catching ability seem to give them problems.

Putting Ruby back to return punts seems unfair.  He stepped in front and caught that punt and it was like he was in fast forward running by defenders.

For JCU, I was impressed w Collins.  He's very good.  He moves around to avoid pressure and throws a nice ball.  If he didn't get sacked he seemed to connect repeatedly for chunk plays against the D.  Fugh is one guy I'll be happy to see graduate LOL and Turoc is a nice slot WR.  It was a good test for the D.

Great win. My only request next week is to try to score 100 on BW.

Plunk threw TD #150 today, putting him 7 behind the D3 record.  By my calculations, he should break the record early in the 3rd quarter of the 1st round playoff game

Bill Borchert had 189, but the NCAA doesn't count that because... they're the NCAA.  So Plunk will likely be the NCAA record holder but not the school record holder

BTW, after the Mount game I flipped over to watch the last 10 min of the Musky/Wilm game.  It was insane.  Go check out that box score.  I think Larrimer threw 9 TD passes?  Tied for the all-time OAC record I think they said. It was crazy.  And Musky won at the end in a great finish.  64-63 I think.  Then their announcers cutely said if they beat Etta next week they'll finish 5-5.  It's good to have goals I guess.

It does seem particularly silly from a record-keeping perspective that only playoff games after 2002 or whatever count towards records. It's not like stats from previous playoff games weren't documented and can't be added.

I bet you could use this to win a bar bet!

It has been a rough couple of years. Lost both my parents and a brother, and my wife's dad passed early this year, so football hasn't been high on the list right now. I have not followed too much this season (caught some highlights or replays) but I have been busy. Have not made it to a game....yet. But we (the fam and I) just got back from Germany and Dublin (really needed to get away) and I decided to tune in for this one. Ok, so I followed the score as I helped my wife pack up her dad's house. But I tuned in for the replay last night. Mount looked ok. The offense looked slow (not fully in sinc) and the D reminded me of maybe 2018 (?). They bend but don't break and seem to be able to get that big play on demand. I can't say I was impressed but I wasn't disappointed either.

The thing I can't shake is that Plunk reminds me of Seaman and/or Fulford. Talented but you know there are things he can do (you've seen him do it) but for some reason he isn't doing them. He can run. I have seen him. He's actually mobile but he doesn't and instead throws it away, or checks down even though he could get 15-20 running. It's just frustrating.

Having said that - this was a great test for Mount. JCU is a good team and played well - they averaged 5.5 per play and had 300 in the air. But Mount found a way. Grind out good days. This just felt like a glass half empty type of win. Now the question...does JCU stand a chance at playoffs with 2 losses? Top ranked losses...but losses.

Sorry for the lengthy. Roll Raiders ~ Roll!

If we're talking leaving out certain stats I think the 2020 spring season shouldn't count. Not every team participated and it was a shorter than usual season. It kinda throws a wrench in career stats considering it counted towards guys careers but didn't count towards their eligibility clock.

I get that career stats are weird anyway when you factor in different game counts with playoff runs and such, but the covid season really seems to have made some of these comparisons hard to think about.
