Quote from: theaprof on September 21, 2024, 05:22:20 PMCAN WE PLEASE GET AN OC WITH SOME IMAGINATION???  There were only two creative plays that I saw all day--both were very successful.  Middle, middle, out pass, scramble--all day long.  I know a win is a win, but sheesh!

Nope, the HC is an offensive genius...who also married well, job wise

I am a big of a Mount Union fan as the next guy, but these are not your grandfather's Purple Raiders.
These are the get beat in the second round of the playoff's Purple Raiders.  I believe everything goes in cycles and they are unfortunately on the descending part of it.
Hopefully it doesn't take too long to get to the ascending part and get back to winning the championships again.
How long it takes is up to them.
Sign more good top freshman, develop the young players, better play calling, and a little luck always helps.

I hope that I'm wrong but Mount isn't winning anything with boy wonder at the helm.  It's been 4+ years and it's still the same song and dance.  Maybe VK will get a head job and take his brother in law with him

Mounts two starting corners were out today.

That makes a lot of sense, we were getting smoked out there, however, that doesn't excuse the lack of any sort of pass rush

It certainly feels that way, they didn't seem to pass the eye test to me. Didn't seem to have the size and speed of a championship-caliber team. However, it's only game 2 and there's a lot of football left to play.

ONU took down Heidelberg in impressive fashion. Congrats to Coach Fries. Impressive win.

Raider 68

After attending the game yesterday, a couple thoughts on what I saw.

For JCU,

- blown out by a good UWW team (at least on 9-7)
- a team who has rarely beat the Raiders over the past few decades
- playing again in front of a full house
- a big offensive line with some talented WR's
- playing with the motivation on the UWW loss and the last time they will play
the Raiders in the regular season

For Mount Union

- a very good running performance by Tyler E. and Beaudrie
- a defense that still gives up the big plays
- average to mediocre WR's who are small
- a good punter
- Still no OC
- a series of dumb play calls
- a HC that has not learned much from last year's ending

Forecast:

- a tougher game against B-W next week
- at best another 11-1 season
- no real solution going forward.

If the University can spend to funds to re-do the Covered Stands, then they can tell the Athletic Director( If they really is one) to hire an OC or better yet meet with Coach K and tell him this team and others will not be at the Championship level until changes are made. We are now in a place as supporters, alums and former players that the glory years may be a distant memory.

At least one prominent member of the Mount Union football family wanted to cancel the game with JCU in reaction to their leaving the OAC. Not hard to guess who that is.
JCU's quarterback played a hell of a game. JCU seemed to have more zip and purpose at the beginning of the game. Does anyone know why JCU couldn't throw on WWW? I can see why they couldn't run or stop the run at WWW, but their passing attack should work on anyone. Mount Union made him look like the OAC Offensive Player of the Year.
We must remember this is QB No.8 Noah B's second game.
Is it my imagination or is RB No.0 Tyler E. twice as fast as he was last year?

Raider 68

Pruple,

The JCU QB is a Grad student who came from Bucknell D1. With those WR's they will win easily for the balance of their schedule. Beaudrie will be fine and I thought he had a very good game against JCU. Tyler E. is faster this year. Someone commented that both Mount's CB's did not start, why? The defensive secondary was on their heals the entire game. Back to the drawing board.

"The Standard"

I understand that.

We had the fortune of having the greatest coach in college football history for 27 seasons. Winning 93% of the time is not the norm. Losing two regular season games in 19 seasons is not the norm.

The unimaginative offense is ranked No. 7 in yards per game and No. 6 in scoring. Last season it was No. 6 in YPG and No. 5 in scoring.

Let's say we go 11-1 again, or 12-1 (i.e., we don't win the national championship) and you get the coach run out of town. Who's coming in? It's almost certainly going to be someone from the LK coaching tree, correct?

Zac Bruney maybe - he has a winning percentage of just over .500 at Wheeling.

Erik Raeburn? - he had an .875 winning percentage at Wabash with two unbeaten regular seasons out of eight. At Gannon his offense last season was 82nd in total yards per game and 105th in scoring. His best team at Wabash, 2015, (they lost to Mount Union 20-8) was 41st in total offense and 26th in scoring.

Both fine coaches but do they have the resumes of The Standard?

In 1982, a once-in-a-generation coach retired from the University of Alabama with a winning percentage of .824 and six national championships in 25 seasons. In the 25 years after that, Alabama went 202-101-2 (.6655) and won one national championship. And they ran six coaches out of town (the first four were from the Bryant coaching tree) before finding Nick Saban in 2007 - and even that hire was panned by a lot of fans.

I'm not blindly defending Dartt, the play-calling, any of that, OK? But I think it's reasonable to accept that Division III, as a whole, is more competitive than at any time in its history. I want to see the Raiders win every game as much as the next guy. But, man, beating your biggest rival in the final game for the foreseeable future by any margin ... it seems like nit-picking. (I thought our onside kick coverage team was fantastic BTW!)

I post this only to hopefully spur reasonable discussion, not an argument.

Those stats sound good, but the reality is that on the other 85% of their passing plays (41 total passes) their QB had ALL day to throw, with minimal pressure, I'd rather have consistent pressure and 0 sacks than whatever we dialed up yesterday leading to 4 passing TDs and 325 yards passing

We're 100% unreasonable as a fan base, our expectations on this program were created by a legendary coach who created the most dominant program college football has ever seen at any level (though NDSU may argue with that).

But I think having this unreasonable expectations is just part of the fun of it, at SOME point you have to regress.  I always tried to explain to people it's not easy to get to the Stagg bowl just because Mount did it every year.

Desertraider

Our expectations may be unreasonable BUT...Geoff Dartt knew the gig when he took it! The play calling is unimaginative and lazy. LK was in the corner of the endzone pacing and he did not look happy, the fans arent happy, and I cant imagine the alums and former players (and their $$) are happy. This is a team living off the success of the past.
