I would've assumed the great Rocky Pentello from Capital had that record locked up, I swear he was 24 or 25 when we played him in the playoffs in '06.

Seventh-year quarterback TJ DeShields! So be it.

NCAA mulling giving all athletes five years of eligibility

I saw this and was going to share it here. This would benefit schools, like Mount Union, who have graduate programs to offer a full course load to maintain eligibility. If they would do this, would it be a bad thing to get rid of "redshirts"?

Saw this in today's d3fb article about the purple raiders, quote from coach Dartt

"I just told the locker room ... we're going to be the underdogs and we're fine in that situation because, nothing personal, but we don't pay attention to what other people say about the program.

Okay then how do you know you're the underdogs coach?

Just classic coach speak imo

He is working on his second master's degree! I'm sure a doctorate would be next but he confirmed he is definitely out of eligibility.

To set the record straight - Pentello's kid was 24/25 in '06. Rocky was 44, full time employed at Cap in the Physical Plant, and working on a degree in Education when he discovered he had eligibility remaining from the Reagan administration. After 9 redshirt years, and an extension, he finally used his last remaining eligibility in 2019. Almost made it to a COVID year 😁

As is usually the case with ESPN I was watching the replay of the Johns Hopkins/MountUnion game on ESPNU and they didn't even get to halftime and College Basketball is on and our game isn't I'm sure it will be the same thing after the Stagg Bowl tonight rush mode to get to something that they deem more important I'm just saying.

Quote from: WRMUalum13 on January 02, 2025, 05:40:25 PMI honestly don't care all that much about either FBS school, lets talk about Sunday's game!

I think an interesting thing to watch is how Mount plans to deal with God's gift to college football.  Against Salisbury, Rossy dropped back into a Safety-ish spot to spy the QB, could we see something similar against Lehnen?

Pass rush lanes are going to be super important; everybody wants to make Lehnen a pocket passer, but it will not be easy. Kaleb, Rossy and Factor all are superb at getting after the QB, but they will have to play with great discipline on Sunday to limit the QB leaking out on key passing downs.

or do you play to let Lehnen "get his" but try to shut down everyone else?

the offense getting off to a good (even decent start) will hopefully be something that the coaches have been preparing for, can't put up an 0-fer in the first half and get down by 21 again.

Agreed, this is the aspect of the game I look most forward to. How to contain/limit NCC.
My opinion is tainted by my memory of Mt DB's in the greatest era of D3 (2005-2014). I always felt Mt had the best athletes.
Realizing I'm no defensive genius, my approach would be to go with man coverage and one or two contain/spy guys on Lehnen. Make the NCC receivers beat Mt's best athletes and force Lehnen to throw accurate passes in tight windows. The DB's will have their backs turned to Lehnen, so it's critical the contain/spy guys take proper angles (can't believe how often you see guys at every level trying to make the tfl rather than pursue flat down the line of scrimmage) and be sure tacklers.

Just my opinion on how I'd initially approach the game.

Little coming from Mount Union Public Affairs/Sports Information/Alumni Office about this Stagg Bowl.  No game notes, as well, I see.
Is this yet another "We truly miss Lenny!" situation ... where the office(s) is/are trying to regroup (form a strategy)?
When only a one week difference between previous semi-finals and the Stagg Bowl, I had received something in the mail ... Yes!; U.S. Mail ... and e-mails.  There was always info on the website about "watch parties" across the nation ... or even charters ... and where the fan gathering spot would be at the stadium ("free food") ... etc.
To be cynical, it is as if this Stagg Bowl "is just another" ... routine ... requiring no highlight ... LESS than a promotable event than before (given prognostications)?

The basketball was only a look-in during a break.  (Might even have been from the original broadcast.  I don't know since I didn't see the original broadcast.)

I agree with many that the Texas Stagg Bowls are not a great idea - but I sure wouldn't want to be sitting outside tonight in Canton or Salem.

Purple13

When it comes right down to it it's all about ratings and money I myself enjoyed when the Stagg Bowls were played on Saturdays as opposed to the Friday night and this year's Sunday night crap as for the cold weather oh well it's January I guarantee you that they won't even come close to filling up half of that stadium and really how people from Texas will be in attendance tonight but anyway that's the way it's going to be moving forward so I guess we as fans have to live with it.
