NCC2010

Quote from: Pat Coleman on January 14, 2025, 11:42:05 AMIf he played in four or fewer regular season games, all of them in the first half of the season, and ended the season injured and unable to play or practice, then he would generally be able to get a medical hardship season of eligibility.

FWIW, NCC's best defensive player in 2023, Dan Lester, was unable to get a medical redshirt for 2024 because he played in games 1, 2, and 4 of the 2023 season.  I believe if you play in any game after the 3rd game you are unable to get a medical redshirt. At least that is what Coach Spencer told Pat/Greg in the podcast interview leading up to the 2023 Stagg Bowl.

I wonder if NCC playing an NAIA team in week one also threw off the "math" a little.

Saw where former Purple Raider defensive stalwart, Jonathan Gonell, got the Beachwood head football coach job tonight. Congrats to another Mount Union product leading young men.

For what it's worth, I believe it is any game after four. It's one-third of the season, but rounded up, so the fourth game.

from a quick internet search, the NCAA rules state "must not have participated in more than 30% of games", so with a 10 game season I would assume you could not play after the third game?  Otherwise, not sure how Lester did not get it considering he only played in 3 games, one of them being a game against an NAIA team, and all games played were by the 4th game of the season. If you remove the NAIA game, then he only played in 2/9 games which is still lower than 30%.

Since he was a great player I am assuming the staff looked into this pretty thoroughly.  Could be wrong though, the eligibility rules these days are very difficult to track.

The NAIA opponent thing is not a factor. A contest is a contest is a contest.

Also not sure of your source on 30%. It's not accurate. See the chart labeled Figure 14-1 on p. 86 of the current NCAA Division III manual.

https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/reports/getReport/90011

That does include the scrimmage, though, so if that's four out of the 11 contests (10 games plus scrimmage) that might account for the difference. Or it might be that he practiced but was unable to play later on. I don't remember if they tried to bring him back but were unable to.

Congrats to Blake Elliott! very deserving. Dude was a dawg.  Congrats to the SJU booster program on getting him in!  If beating Mount Union one time is enough to put you in, I'd think that Mount should start piling up Hall of Famers.

Borchert is 100% getting robbed.  if you think of the guys that the "media" can't get enough of these days, Borchert was doing that a million years ago.

Elliott was very, very good.  But the Mount guys must need some politicking.  Borchert, Kmic, Burke, Shorts and Micheli should be next.  There are big ugly guys that should be in the HOF as well, but that'll never happen.

joelmama

Borchert put up one year numbers that should have him enshrined on that alone.

purple blood

189 td passes if playoffs counted is insane. Borchert was THAT GUY.

Yeah ... I was at that 2003 Stagg Bowl.  It was the Wife's first, and she wasn't allowed back until 2015.

Remember, it was a win over an "unbeaten" Mount Union team for that only win ... unbeaten in both that season and in the Stagg Bowl.

Elliott, that year's Gagliardi Trophy winner, playing with a hamstring injury, had 110 yards rushing (one 51-yard TD), 51 yards receiving (wasn't he a WR by "regular" position?), and 27 return yards, and was voted the game's Most Outstanding Player.

I also note in the box score that there is some guy named Nick Sirianni on the Purple Raiders squad that had a "respectable" day with 106 receiving yards.  That sort of performance won't get him on a College Football Hall of Fame ballot, so I certainly do hope that he has used his college football playing days as lesson in life, maybe a springboard ... something that might land him on a "big stage" in the future.  If not, "Sports Equipment Salesman of the Year" is nothing to sneeze at!

D3fanboy

If being named Stagg MVP in a huge upset moves the needle, then I guess the Cortland QB is a near lock to be enshrined

Pat Coleman

Yes -- because Elliott was nursing a hamstring that day, and because of the Mount Union pass defense, they wanted to make sure they could get their guy enough touches and putting him in the backfield was the route they chose.

He also still has the NCAA record for TD passes in a season If I remember correctly
