Quote from: Dr. Acula on January 23, 2025, 07:52:19 PMExactly.  IMO the biggest remaining hurdle between the farce of the players getting paid for NIL only and being an employee on payroll is the universities/NCAA still laughably claiming the athletes are not employees just amateur athletes.  Eventually I would think it ends in revenue sharing where the university sets aside a % of their athletics revenue for player payroll.  NIL could still be paid in addition to that I'd imagine so the gap between the haves and have nots will remain, but it sets a floor for everyone.

Quote from: Dr. Acula on January 21, 2025, 09:10:22 AMIt'd definitely be interesting.  I wonder if/when the athletes become employees of the schools it will be public as it is (or used to be at least) for all state employees?  There used to be a database where you could look up state employees, teachers, etc.  Basically anyone funded by tax dollars.  I showed it to one of my buddies that worked at OSU and he texted me the next day telling me he spent his entire day at work looking up what other people at OSU made.

Keep in mind the schools are not actually paying these players. They are getting paid by outside organizations for the value of their "name image and likeness" for promotional purposes

for now.  Revenue sharing is coming very, very soon

lets hope that the professionalism of the top level of college sports doesnt leak all the way down to D3.  but I'm not hopeful
Hopefully UMHB gets out of D3 before that is approved.  Handing out old Subarus in the shadows is one thing, I doubt anyone could keep up with the legal handouts down there.

There's not enough money in D3 athletics for it to leak down this far! It's $25 to go to a championship game for pete's sake.

Sure, there are a few kids making a little off of true NIL deals, like on opendorse, but I'm not seeing 6 figure payrolls or anything in D3... ever.

I mean there aren't even very good NIL deals at the top levels of FCS as far as I can tell. There just isn't a big enough donor base. I doubt MAC football players are even getting very much NIL.

Many MAC schools don't even operate a profitable athletic department, so profit sharing wouldn't even work. Kent State for example lost over 1 million dollars on athletics last year.

It only takes one guy with some spare change and a willingness to spend it.  Does the name "McLane" ring a bell?

Wow- an easy guy to root for. Just read a bit about his family. Two brothers coaching (one at D 3 W&J) and his dad coached. Nick paid his dues as well, moving up the ranks.
I'm sure you all know this stuff, interesting to an outsider though.

His brother Mike was a classmate of mine. Super guy on and off the field.

I hear you, d3fanboy -- it's really hard for us to get access to folks in the NFL and we don't have the resources to put people in NFL press boxes for these games to get that kind of access. I know when we had Mike on the podcast a couple years ago in Fast Five we talked about Nick and yes, we could totally talk about Nick more. I bet if we still had Keith around more, we probably would be doing a little more Philadelphia Eagles coverage. :)

I don't think it's based on where Nick Sirianni went to school -- we end up doing almost nothing on the D-III folks in the NFL because we just aren't in a position to be there to report. Certainly something I'd like to do more, talk to folks when they come through Minneapolis, even, but these days the way the podcast and the Top 25 are, I don't feel like I can take 5-6 hours away from the desk on a Sunday to even go do that.

there was a little talk/reminiscing about Mount Union night games recently.  with Wheaton putting out their 2025 schedule, including a 1:00 EST kickoff in Alliance, it doesn't seem like we'll be getting any night games for at least another season.  BW at the end of September would be the only other shot

Wheaton, @GC, BW is a real quick get down to business start to the year for the Purple Raiders

I think the last one, at least in Alliance, was right round 10 years ago. Had at least one every year when I was there. My first home game as a student was the revival of them against JCU in 2004 and it was packed.

Looks like Wayne Ruby might have signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL:

the last one I remember that at least ended at night was the 2012 semi final against UMHB, for some reason the ESPN stagger was weird that year and kickoff was 2pm.

I think the Rose Hulman game was at night at both schools (16-17?)

Awesome! Hope he does well. He definitely has next level hands and athleticism. My only critique from a pro perspective is I don't know if has next level speed.

The Terre Haute game certainly was. I feel like the Alliance game was (at a minimum) a dusk kickoff? And I think it was 18 and 19.

Sirianni joined what at minimum could be described as an all-time staff at the Division III level. Candle was still the receivers coach and would later be the offensive coordinator.  Vince Kehres – Larry's son who would take over as head coach from 2013-19 – coached the offensive line. Matt Campbell – another former Mount Union star who is now the head coach at Iowa State – and Sirianni were on the defensive side.

Truly mind blowing to have that staff with a team that featured Kmic, Micheli, Garcon, etc.
