Yes, Witt was 5-5 in 1991. It is a streak of non-losing seasons.

Oh, Judas Priest! Secret ballot? Certainly, there's some other criteria. Man, the OAC needs to get its act together on that!

I am quite frankly more heart sick about going 2-6 in Pick'em than yesterday's game. Eleven years of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Hey, Northern beat us, plain and simple, not one excuse. I believe I said if anybody was going to do it, ONU and Dean Paul could. Party time on the tundra.
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

do anybody think ONU would have beaten MUC if garcon was 100 %
what do you think about MUC goal line  Offense

Please, maybe you are simply trying to get some heated debate on this board ... but the question of Garcon's injury affecting the outcome? What about the National Defensive Player of the Year being out for ONU in Jason Trusnik. Give credit where credit is due.

Amonachinio -

Great post - was at the game. It was worth the cold I will probably catch as a result.

ONU went for 4th and 1 because they were fearful of another blocked punt or other mishandle.

With the wind howling, the odds of MUC going 55 yards in just a few plays with no timeouts was apparently a better bet than a punt. Keep in mind that Meadows had run for 24 yards on the preceding three plays. ONU had a 1st down and 25 to go after the blocking penalty on 1st down. ONU figured the odds were high he could get the 1 yard.

I was shocked that MUC did not throw the Hail Mary. I checked the heights of ONU's secondary in the MUC game program when the final series began. The only DB who was playing at the time who was over 5'10" was Rusty Midlam who was listed at 6'1".

My take on the two teams - MUC wins 7 or 8 out of 10 contests. ONU has to play error free (which they did with the exception of the blocked punt) to win while forcing errors on the part of MUC (which they did with 4 turnovers). One could also call the opening kick off that ONU recovered a form of fifth turnover.

If Garcone is healthy, it definitely effects the outcome of this game, whether Mount wins or not I don't speculate, but  using him sparingly as he was made little threat to ONU.  As for the Mount Defense, goal line stand or not, they have done well. No team can expect their defense to contain formidable offense that's on the field for nearly 2/3 of the clock time without some help from the offensive side. My frustration with the defense was the breakdown on 3rd down plays. Not sure what the 3rd down efficiency was for ONU but had to be exceptionally high. Unfortunately the weather did factor into the cushion given by the db's to receivers on those downs, IMO. Coach Paul played his cards well throughout, some credit due i'm sure to his learning years at Mount.

I was going off both Witt's unofficial fan site and Witt's football page linked below.  They refer to "winning seasons" so the school's own website is incorrect.

http://www4.wittenberg.edu/news/athletics/football/archive/tradition.html

I thought I could assume it to be true since it was clearly stated on the schools site.

Is the "P" in your email address short for Pierre?  You asked if anyone could cover the Mount wideouts and it was a third guy that catches a TD.  Casto had one big play in the first half for 30+ yards but was quiet as both a receiver and returner the rest of the game.  You asked if anyone could match up with Garcon who came in to the game banged up and was a non-factor.  Let's not focus on hypotheticals.

My only question about Garcon is this: What's the real injury?  Someone said during the game he had a broken bone in his leg and another said he has shin splints or something of that sort.  So what is it?

See my previous post ... Garcon vs. Trusnik.

My suggestion (not that you probably care) - be as gracious in losing as MUC fans have historically been in winning. To do otherwise only looks childish ...

Going on the 4th and 1 was a very smart call, I don't think Caoch Paul with the conditions at the time wanted to take the chance on another blocked punt during into points or letting Casto determine the outcome. If that situation came up 100 more times with the same scenario, and Meadows in your backfield!!!! ...it's no even a choice!

Here's what it actually says:

Quote from: Wittenberg sports information on October 23, 2005, 06:31:18 PM
48 winning seasons since 1955, NCAA best

Doesn't say every seasons since 1955 and doesn't say 49, which is the right answer.

They are probably going semantic on you, saying "NCAA best" as if that somehow wipes away Linfield's 50-year streak.

hey, FSUkid was only asking a speculative question, and anyone can speculate what if's a million times. In no way am I out to tarnish ONU's victory at all, they outplayed Mount throughout the game! I was there, I know! And as I indicated, even if Garcone was healthy it does effect the outcome, i wouldnt speculate that it necessarily changes the scoreboard.  As well  as the Polar Bears controlled the ball offensively with their running game, they were in control throughout.

Understood.

I wanted to thank you for a very well written game summary.  I read ONU's release (of course) but I was interested in your take.  I would suspect you always had an idea of how you would paint the picture when the streak finally came to an end.  You did a very good job of setting the stage and recapping the outcome.  Thanks for your hard work and great site.  If I had a little more resources and were not so geographically handicapped, I would love to put something together for my Bears.  Also I wish there were a way to get your broadcast on the web because I would love to hear you do your thing.

Ditto on the broadcast, Ric -- would have greatly preferred to hear your final call and postgame.

RC, Pat, others,
Ric not only does the Mount games but also contributes to the local high school broadcasts as well, he's done a terrific job covering both scenes. Tell us Ric, its not true that you're wrapping up the year on the high school coverage?  We'll miss it, if its so  :(
