RE: Massillon vs. McKinley

I believe that they are selling tickets on e-bay for the game. First time in a long time that both squads are undefeated at game time.

Mr. Ypsi

That is SICK (and I mean that in BOTH the senses of 'wow, that's impressive!' AND, well, 'that's sick')!  Tickets for a high school football game being scalped on EBay???!

I'm somewhere between in awe and in the john!

Ypsi: If you had ever seen a Massillon Washington High School football game, you would merely be in awe. I would prefer attending Saturday's Massillon game to Ohio State-Michigan or any other college game of which I know.

I've been to Massillon & Mckinley games over the years, its truly become a legendary battle both on and off the field unfortunately. Actually I got tickets to this one saturday but doubt i'll be going since Mount is at home with BW, and I'll need to wake up those sleeping fans. I guarantee there is no comparison between the crowd noise at Fawcett during that game and a Mount game!

That doesn't take much though.  I've been to Golf Tournaments that have been louder than Mount Union Football Games.

Mr. Ypsi

I understand where you are all coming from, but as the father of a hs senior athlete (captain of both the soccer and lacrosse teams, though that means he usually has to deal with 'crowds' of <50!), I'm just not sure that this degree of 'support' is healthy.

It seems to me that crowds of 22,000 (and tickets on EBay!) is a bit too much pressure for 14-18 year-old KIDS.  I can easily envision a 15-year-old kicker missing a game-winner, and receiving death threats!  Can't we let kids be kids?

Well said mucraiders.  Mount crowds often dissapoint me.  Maybe if their average age wasn't 70 it'd be better.  Heck even the student section is quiet. And most of them leave by halftime.  I really didn't enjoy sitting there my freshmen year. That's why I don't sit there anymore. Instead I enjoy my view from the sidelines or pressbox as part of WRMU.
The impossible CAN happen and eventually it WILL happen.

Ypsi: Where is the line between "support" and "too much support", and who draws it? A psycho might be found in a crowd of one.

Nice article on Josh McDaniels (former JCU WR) in today's Boston Herald.

RE: Massillon vs. McKinley

In case you guys missed it, RU posted this on Sunday. Josh McDaniels (former JCU WR and current Patriots QB Coach) was a QB/K for McKinley who did miss an extra point in the 100th edition of the Massillon/McKinley game.

I was at the 100th meeting of Massilon/McKinley, and it is truly a special thing for the Massilon and Canton area.  I am glad to see the two teams are back to their winning ways.

I don't think the crowd size is that big a factor in the pressure to succeed in a high school football game. I spend my Fridays watching Portage Trail Conference (former Portage County League) games involving Division 4-6 schools with 1,500 or less in attendence and they are as much life or death as the games with 20,000 in the stands.
I remember the years Alliance played Massillon and McKinley in Mt Union stadium to standing room crowds and the post game fights spilled all over campus. (1960's) I'm actually saddened that most communities don't have the kind spirit that we see in Massillon as well as in most smaller communities.A lot of large suburban schools draw less fans than small community schools like Mogadore where the whole town comes out.
My suggestion is rent a copy of Friday Night Lights or Friday Nights in America if you can find it. What I think is really sad is for kids to work as hard as high school football player have to and then have 200 or 300 home fans show up like I've seen at Streetsboro and Waterloo. PS If your son has fifty fans at a Lacrosse game he should feel blessed. The only fan we ever had at a Mt Union Lacrosse game was the Dean and he immrediately ordered the team disbanded. (We were too violent) ???

What is sick is the blatant recuiting that is found at schools such as Massillon and McKinley
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

If you have the right connections from the press box could you teach the scoreboard operator how to spell "Make some noise"? I believe that new board must have that capability. I also have to believe the fans with their level of education can at least understand what that means.

HINT: It is not the sound of a pen going across a blank check kind of noise we are looking for!

The students don't have an excuse for not being there or making noise. Free admission. Not much else is free there so why not go. Something else to do on a Saturday afternoon? It's three hours! Do the laundry later.

I have attended many games at other schools that do have the support of the student body and it does make a difference. We have the luxury of having one of the premier programs in the country and the team deserves better for their hard work. I am sure there have been numerous occasions for students and fans to make noise about this team at other social functions. What is the matter with making noise where it is most appreciated?

3500 in attendence for a championship quality game against a top conference rival is an outrage. Oh, it's a little cold and rainy. It's football in the fall,  hello!
We even have coverd stands for the home side.

I 've got it! The next improvement at the stadium should be a dome. That's the ticket. Then will get the fans. I take it back lets hear those pens on those checks.

(Call me whacky but I plan visits back to Ohio based on Mount's schedule.) I don't even check the weather.

I don't have the luxury of seeing the Raiders play every week but I attend a D3 game every week. How does 8000 at a home game that is a sure blowout sound? True. They had loud cheering from all fans. Yes even people over sixty. Students take part in getting the crowd fired up! What a concept.

However, as loud as this home crowd was all day Saturday.......the loudest cheer came when they announced that ONU had defeated MUC. Sad but true. I guess my point is we a have quality program that is even followed outside the confines of MUC stadium. Our opponents across the country keep track of what we are doing you would think as a MUC fan we could do the same. I know I do even 800 miles away.

Insert my cheer when it is needed.....GO RAIDERS!!!!!......BEAT BW!

Can you hear me...is anyone there?

Buehler? Buehler?
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

I agree!!!!!!!

When your team comes through the tunnel and you can't get off your butt (especially in a big game) but you can find the energy to get up and yell at one of your own player(s) for a illegal block or some other error...something is wrong!
