Oh you guys are too funny.  Well time to go play, can't decide which Christmas Card to send out, naughty or nice.  The flame burns strong.  HScoach, don't be calling, I'll be in the hottub. HO HO HO

Great post in the daily dose.  I think that in a couple of these years, had you taken Mount Union out of the mix, that the Stagg Bowl champ would have still hailed from the North Region (Albion, Wittenberg, ONU, JCU, CAP all come to mind in their respective years).
OAC Champs: 1942 (one title ties us with Ohio State)

Hostetler's star keeps rising.

He has been selected to play in the Hula Bowl on Jan. 21 as a direct result of his outstanding performance in the Aztec Bowl in Toluca, Mexico.  He has been named as a return specialist/cornerback and will play under head coach Tommy Tuberville for the East squad.  I believe he may have an opportunity to intercept a fellow DIIIer in Linfield QB Brett Elliot come gametime.

A huge congrats to Hos!

hscoach,
Feedback on your small novel -
Posts like yours are what keep a lot of us coming back to read this board (website).  Thank you much for taking the time to give it to us through your eyes.  You obviously have a great deal of football knowledge and insight and know the teams you watch as very few do.
Pat should be paying you for such insights.

Yes Mt has great talent each year but its the fact that they are the most fundamentally sound team in D3football that makes them great. Fundamentals will overcome gadget plays and spot talent more often than not. Like to the tune of 8 National Championships in 13 years.

Llamaguy.

You have dicovered the secrect that has been hidden in plain sight.  Some of us have tried to point this out in the past, but most would rather seek some sinister reason for Mount's success than to recognize and admire the pure hard work and great coaching that has produced this most amazing program.

Yup.  What they said!

I agree with everything that has been said, but you are also forgetting two major components.

#1- Tradition.  If I was a quality HS player and I had to decide to choose between a 3-6 team and a 8-time national champion, you know darn well where I am going.  This only reaffirms the abilities of the coaches.  For proof, see LAX in the early 90s and Augie in the 80s.

#2- Ohio HS Football.  The state of Ohio is one of the top football states in the country (behind FL, TX and CA- this is debatable).  The state has a decent population base, and of that population, football dominates.  I remember an article in SI years ago about the rivalry between Massillion and another team (I want to say McHenry, but not positive about the team).  When some teams are able to send 2-3 players to division I and another 5-6 to another division, it shows the quality of coaches and players on the teams.

Just a quick question, I have heard rumors that in Texas, players with a possible future in HS and college football are held back a year in 8th grade to allow them another year to mature.  I know this is probably not the norm for any state, but has anyone ever heard of this happening in Ohio?

HScoach

It used to happen at Massillon, but the OHSAA has put age limits on HS sports.   Massillon also made "recruiting" a household word long before we all followed college recruiting. ;D

and the team you were thinking of is Canton McKinley.

Hey everybody,
I just wanted to point out that "fbfan" who has been posting on Daily Dosage is not me, "footballfan413."  My karma has taken a hit lately and there might be a connection.  I have no problem taking responsibility for my own comments but don't want to do it for someone elses!!   ;D ;D ;D   I may have to change my moniker!!

Karma hits are not coming from me but it was probably good that you came in and cleared it up.  The fbfan on daily dose has said some pretty inflammatory and ignorant things.  I wouldn't want to get mixed up with him/her either.

wiacfbgrad,

The tradition factor certainly helps.  I read an interview with Lee Owens, coach of Division II Ashland University in which he said he has had recruits turn down scholarship money at Ashland because they wanted to play for LK and the Raiders.

On the other hand, every year we see good HS players enroll at Mount as Freshmen only to disappear from the roster as Sophomores.  Nate Kmic starting as a Freshman is very unusual.  Many good players do not want to "pay their dues" at Mount and transfer to schools where they have a better chance of playing.  (And while I'm often disappointed to find they have left, I can't really blame them.)

Merry Christmas to all on the OAC board and their families.

Was this year perhaps the best coaching job done by LK and company?  Just a question that has been rolling around in my head.

rscl70,,,,, playing at MUC is not easy. Much hard work is involved. The time in the weight room, the summer running and lifting,,and the long season,,,an extra 5 weeks of practice a year ,,and if you get no PT  then it is very hard. However there are many 4 year players on the roster,,who do not play a lot,, but they want to be part of THE BEST football program in D 3,and for those who want to be teachers/coaches it is a great learning situation..Some do leave and play else where,, but some leave because it is costly,,and they realize they are just not good enough to play,,,

beenhit2hard

I am not sure of the #'s this year,, but usually 25-30 seniors on the roster  ,,out of maybe 60++ who start in the freshman class
