"Wait till he finds out that he is free to buy his own ticket and come to visit campus at his own expense to talk to the coaches. OAC/D3 recruiting is a far cry from what he'll see from D1 schools. BTW Do we know who gave him the hat?  :)

Happy New Years to everyone "
He will be  :o when he finds that out. You gotta love DIII. They make you independent. "Pay for it yourself!"  ;D

Who gave him the hat?  My guess is that los hat was a gift from Stoonk on behalf of Los Purple Raiders.  I think he is from Los California himself.

formerd3db,,,I was looking at the ncaa numbers and yours were right on on d 1,,, I did not look at all the others,,1aa was interesting ,, still trying to figure it out. I did not take your message in a negative manner,,,I am always eager to learn,,but sometimes I forget very quickly,,, wish we had to wear facemasks back then !!

Also,,Troy Starr, former MUC QB is a H.S. coach in California,,,,and I know the "Stoonk" personally,,,so I will ask him if he is the" recruiter"

Thanks for the follow-up.  Yes, DIAA is interesting with their subdivisions i.e. non-scholarship and scholarship.  Are the DIAA scholarship programs also limited to a specific number of preferred walk-ons (I meant to clarify that DI programs are allowed the 30 pre-ferred walk-ons as ADDITIONAL to the 85 scholarship players, although I'm sure most people knew that or knew that's what I meant) and also, are the non-scholarship DIAA programs allowed an unlimited #'s for the entire team as in DIII (with the exception of those conferences in DIAA that might limit the roster size as some of the DIII schools or conferences do)?  Perhaps you can find that out for us when you get a chance.

BTW, don't feel bad.  I've been accused (or alleged) for years by many people of not wearing a helmet during my collegiate playing days! ;D ::) :P

It could be one of my hats, been counting the collection and seems like a I'm missing the '96 national Champion hat, hmmm. When you got like 15-20 , gotta lose track, lol

I'll assume that once USC handes Texas (though my wish is the other way) then J Holland will have all the incentive to be Trojan. But, I've always liked the philosophy some athletes take of wanting to be a BIG FISH in a small pond, rather than a small fish in a BIG POND. We'll watch for him in the All-American bowl among similar talent, should be fun.

Just don't try to take my 1993 OAC Champs "Back to Back" hat that's still my favorite hat, unless we're talking Track, then it's my Repro Mount Union OAC Track Championships 1967-1968 hat, cause I was there.

God am I old. Sorry Runyr & Rascl70

70's,
I remember you were a high jumper for Mount Union's Coach Wuske.  For those that didn't know him, Jim Wuske was another great, great Mount Union coach, who even earned an NCAA national championship (1974 - CC).

mtfan:

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who continues to collect collegiate hats!  My wife keeps at me for continually adding yet another hat to my collection. usually with a comment about it only going to sit on the shelf with the others or something to the effect that "...oh no, not another one - when are you going to wear this one?  ::)  Got that look and comment again, when I bought this years' DIII NCAA Championship hat at the playoff game I attended (had to get it there since I wasn't able to attend the Stagg this year and get one there like I did last year when I made it to Salem ;D)

But, keep it up.  Sounds like you have quite a collection and in all seriousness, it is most likely worth a lot in many respects - if not in increasing value i.e. $ - aside from all the $ you originally paid for them, but also if just for sentimental value.  That is ceraintly important. :)

Mount Union in Sports Illustrated:
The Best of 2005, The Year in Sports, Special Double Issue with Reggie Bush and Matt Leinhart on the cover (Dec 26-Jan 2 issue).
See page 36: Who's Hot and Who's Not.
Purple Raiders listed as one of four in the hot column.  There's a photo of a player, but I can't make out the jersey number (somebody help me out).
The text reads:
"Mount Union beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 35-28 to win the Division III title and end a 14-1 year.  Said Purple Raiders coach Larry Kehres, whose .915 winning percentage is NCAA football's best ever, "This team deserves to be called great.'"

runyr,

looks to me like it is Kmic.  I believe the number is 36 (although the ball is blocking most of the number, so it is hard to tell) and the player in question wears one of the new "Revolution" helmets (if you don't know what I am talking about, think Peyton Manning), which I believe from the pictures is what Kmic wears.

Old? Hmmmm ???

How's that country song go?  "I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was!"

Happy New Year everyone. ;D

FYI

Troy Starr was a LB at MUC, not a QB..he was a stud linebacker and was selected for the MUC athletic Hall of Fame a couple of years ago...

question for the masses....I believe I heard that nate Kmic's #36 was worn by Russ Kring...
I remember Russ as a terrific YAC ballcarrier, maybe the best I can remember at Mount....Kmic shows the same YAC ability...
Did Kring wear #36, because I don't recall that he did....and I usually remember these things..

but I have been known to forget more important facts..

I know Troy well.  He is not only a coach in California he is one of the most successful coaches in one of the best leagues in L.A.  It is in fact Woodland Hills Taft where this kid is from.   If I remember correctly Troy graduated in 84 and was an All-American.
