The Pick-Em's have been posted.

Good luck!

Did not see Kuhn listed on Ric's Mount Union roster. I guess we can finally assume he is not playing this year.

Thought  the raiders looked good saturday, although I'm not sure how solid WJ is this year. It was nice to see a WB grad at qb for WJ though.

DII/DIIIFan

RC is 100% correct on those silly 40 times at Capital. My oldest daughter is a DI level sprinter (100M and 200M) so I have a little expertise in this area (one of the few areas I'll claim to have either knowledge or expertise) ... :-)

The accepted standard to convert a hand-timed event to its automatically timed equivalent is to round up to the nearest tenth of a second -- and add .24 seconds. Thus, a hand timed 4.35 is actually a 4.64.

Additionally, most football 40's don't go on a starter's pistol but on the athlete's initial motion. The average reaction time among elite world class sprinters (from the gun to the moment they exert pressure on the starting block's electronic pads) is about .15 seconds; for a football player with little track experience it probably would be closer to .2. Thus, change that 4.64 to a 4.84 if you comparing football speed to a track sprinter.

Anyone running 4.4 or under in the real world has world class speed and is probably not being discussed in the context of DIII sports.

In high school I played with a kid who ran a 4.4  Unfortunately my coaches messed up the measurements and he ran a hand timed 4.4 in the 31 yard dash.

I have always believed that the best of male world class sprinters would "run" about a 3.90/40 if the recording conditions which applied to them were generally the same as ones used for football players.

Richard Pryor said he ran a 3.0 40 when he caught himself on fire!

reality check

Just got the ONU Football Newsletter in the mail and while I haven't heard anything directly from camp, I do know ONU expects some great things out of a very good recruiting class in coming years.

82 Incoming freshman from 7 states.

62 Ohioans.
7 kids from Florida.
4 from Indiana.
3 from Michigan.
2 from PA.
1 each from Connecticut (I had nothing to do with him), Maryland, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Who knows  how many will have an immediate impact but I do know the kid from Tennessee was Mr. Football in 3A (small school) with 1800 yards and 23 TD's rushing.  The Bears also have the all-Ohio Kicker (D-I)and some very good looking and highly touted LB's, WR's and RB's coming in.

I'm also proud to say that Coach Paul's  AGP (Academic Game Plan) continues to improve.  56 players acheived 3.0 or better last year while 21 managed a 3.5 GPA or better.

(And for the record, the newsletter speaks of the increased success in team speed and  says the Bears (who were pretty fast last year) improved to having 12 players run sub 4.6 40's.  Sounds more reasonable than any talk of 4.2 times in Bexley.)

THANK GOD IT'S FOOTBALL SEASON!

RC:
After going thru the newly posted MUC roster, I was surprised by the number of Florida kids coming north.  Most are 160 lb DB's, but I'm still surprised that you can convince a kid to travel north when he must pay $30k to play football.  Simply amazing.  Will be very curious to see how many of these out of state kids stick it out.

I'm looking forward to the 2006 season more than I have most years.  MUC returns a ton of offensive talent, but not much defensively from a surprising Stagg Bowl team.  And both Capital and ONU enter 2006 as more than legit title threats to MUC's OAC throne.  Otterbein and JCU were very respectable 7-3 and are looking to remaining in the upper half of the conference.   And the flaming pile of BW is trying to avoid a total and official collapse of a quality program.  Should be a very interesting and competitive year in the OAC.

There was no shortage of big plays for the Capital offense in its scrimmage (ok, it was Bluffton)

That's because they all run a 4.3....

Quick overview of CU,  the defense is not very big but they are strong and very fast.  On the other side, Rocky will always have plenty of talent to throw the ball to and Mulkey may be the best running back Cap has had in a long time.

Looking forward to another great year in the OAC!

Thanks for noticing.  But at my advanced age, what can you expect?  And besides, with Ric's old lady now 45 minutes away, there's no reason to get all worked up ;D

Calling HSCoach soft is like calling Casper white.  Some things just don't need to be said; they're understood.

et to RC?

Just a friendly reminder that the spreads for the 2006 Pick-Em's are posted on the General Board.  And to date, we're missing some regulars (and newbie's too).
