I also witnessed the Mount Union/Ashland football JV game and was impressed with the skill and effort displayed. A few years back Lee Owens brought his Akron coaching crew to Alliance to study LK and his offense. Whatever he took from that experience didnt end up in the offense i saw last night. With all the div 1 transfers that Ashland is getting how would the varsity game between the two have looked? I know that in JV games you work on things to get you ready for what the varsity does, but why on fourth and 1 inside the Ashland 5 do you put the QB in the shotgun with a steady rain? A fumbled snap is a likelyhood...and thats what happened.

Pat Coleman

This guy consistently says that kind of uninformed crap. Feel free to hammer him.

I went to the link provided above and hammered him like Pat Coleman said to. You are asked to leave your real name and location or else they promise to ignor you. I let Easterbrook know how I felt, and now that he has my name and location I will most likely be on his Christmas card list for this year.  Or maybe NOT! This guy obviously has never watched a Mount Union game before. If you just read box scores all day you might get the impression that the Raiders are ruthless to their opponents, but I ve seen the dogs called off early many times over the years.  I can remember a game when Mount Union punted the ball back on first down just to keep from scoring again. Perhaps Easterbrook can review the tapes of the past Stagg bowls...Im sure they are available to him...his employer broadcast the games.

seventiesraider

Despite the fact that I consistantly say uniformed crap as well, I hammered him since I'm envious that he gets paid pretty well for it. 8)

reality check

Since it was one of my more eloquent responses and because the Purple Faithful will no doubt be happy to have a non-Raider hammering Mr. Easterbrook on their behalf, I chose to copy and paste my response to his blabbering.

"Gregg Easterbrook does ESPN and specifically Page 2 a disservice based on his rampant misinformation, especially that of division III football.  He has some sort of axe to grind with Mount Union College.  I have little doubt that he has never seen them play in person and I would not be surprised to learn that he hasn't even taken the time to watch them in their Stagg Bowl appearances on ESPN2.  Instead he accuses them of "rampant unsportsmanlike conduct" in running up scores.  Easterbrook probably doesn't take the time to read box scores, game recaps or listen to Mount Union games so he wouldn't care to know that Mount Union scored 34 points after running just 5 offensive plays against Otterbein College.  Mount is a superior team in division III and often kicks FG's late in games on 1st and 2nd down to avoid running up the score any more than they have to.  I know he doesn't care to know the facts of this matter because they're not hard to find if he takes two minutes to research before he points fingers and slings mud.  Mr. Easterbrook is a blemish on the face of ESPN Page 2.  This defense of Mount Union College happens to come from a fan of a rival Ohio Athletic Conference school that actually follows and understands a thing or two about Mount Union and division III football so please don't write this off as rampant fanaticism on my part.  I don't know much about Gregg Easterbrook but I am not about to call him names based on the perception I have of him based on his uninformed fingerpointing.  That would be a low blow and I can only wish he could turn it around and be as civil as I choose to be in this complaint when it comes to his limited understanding of division III football."

There you go fellas.

Who the heck is this clown?  Gregg Easterbrook

A quick "Google" search says...
http://www.greggeasterbrook.com/bio.html

What is even worse is that in his bio (thanks for the link BRJB) it says he graduated from Colorado College, so he is familiar with DIII Football:
"I am a graduate of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado."

I gave him a little shot as well.

Punting the ball on first down is classless in my opinion, as is kicking field goals as well.

You guys are the best at everything.  Cheer up guys, somebodies got to be labeled worst sports, and you guys have some mighty broad shoulders.

Where that moniker as a badge of courage!

???  What a frickin' dingleberry this guy is.  It's just the way the world works.  Uninformed, sheeplike people always go with the generalization, and no fact based assumptions.

My opinion on blowouts is as follows.  Keep the ones in as long as you feel necessary to get something out of the game, and then start substituting freely.  With the twos, threes, or even fours in there, it's perfectly acceptable to score if able.  Those guys live for a chance to play on Saturday, and should enjoy that experience to the utmost.

As long as a team is employing that practice, I think a great quote is (and I am unsure who and how many have used it), "if you don't like us scoring so much, do something to stop it."

I will respond to this scribe's "wonderful, well-researched" article as well.

That's about as well as it can be said! I was one of those players that played scout team for 4 years with little actual game action and I still had a blast playing Division III football.. the catch with MUC is that they have 3's that could be 1's on some teams.. but is that their fault.. NO!   MUC has played a close game with Bridgewater College and they blew the doors off us in 2003 with an impressive shut out.. I would say 1) MUC players are 1st class on the field and personality wise.  2) Their fans may take a while to warm up but for the most part they are class acts as well.      There will always be morons that yell and make fun of the opposing teams and players but MUC as a whole represents D3 football very well... between SJU and MUC DI can't match the class and tradition those two schools have set for D3.

Now what this ESPN moron probably doesn't understand is that we don't get paid to play in D3.. so of course there are going to be blow outs here and there.. but then again there are DI schools crying over a REPLAY this week to the point where it's becoming annyoing so why not write an "informed" article about that fantastic game and let d3football.com cover the game we love.

Is that a question?

The argument "you guys are the best at everything" is not only untrue, it doesn't make sense.  Mount Union is not the best at everything.  Outside of the football team, which dominates every year, the other athletic teams are only fairly successful (like every other school).

Even if Mount Union was "the best at everything" that doesn't mean the fans should have to sit back and accept untrue claims on a very popular website.

I realize that you may be new around here (the OAC board, at least), and I apologize if I'm coming off as harsh, but I'm with the Mounties on this one.

I would hope MUC would WEAR the badge not where it! :D  Damn BC fans..  ;)

I agree.. MUC doesn't need to just accept the comment.. it's rude and is not true.. I'm crafting an email to this clown.  Collin Cowheard said something rude about D3 football last year on his ESPN radio show.. he must have gotten quite a few because he got very defensive and mocked D3 even more.   If ESPN can't respect D3 sports maybe they should just drop us.. I know the NCAA forces them to take us but scew em'!
