RC,

Lets see:  You are married, and if I remember correctly in your late 20's- early 30's.  Yep, your parents are ready for grandkids.

Seriously, they may not let on, but they want one.  Mine were real cool with the "you take your time" and "when you are ready" and the "you guys need to live your lives and enjoy just one another for awhile" stuff, but as soon as they found out my wife was pregnant it changed into "It's about time" and "I'm so excited, you know I am the last of my friends to have a grandbaby."  Amazing.

Parents are funny when it comes to grandkids.  They do all kinds of stuff you never thought you would live to see them do.  Just wait.

Will they cafeteria at Mount be open before the game Saturday as it is before day games?

There is a community cookout before that evening game. Don't know the details but you might prefer that to the cafeteria.

Why in the world would the Poo Bears be looking ahead to their return trip to Alliance? Are you suggesting you expect a repeat performance?

You know this whole who's the best at which position discussion is interesting however it has led me back to one undeniable point.  Since 1990 no football player enrolling at MUC has graduated without a national championship ring.  All the Mount QB's since Ballard have enjoyed national success and high QB rankings at the end of the year.  The constant is Kehres and his program.  If you lined up all of the QB's since the early 1990's none would resemble another.  Borchert who was previously mentioned is statistically the greatest QB ever to play D3 accounting for over 200 touchdowns in his college career.  In general, colleges did not look at him because he threw a grand total of maybe 20 passes in his HS days...but Mount Union saw something in this undersized player...and I for one don't think it was a fluke.  If Ballard would have stayed at Wilmington, I don't think we would be talking about him as a Gags winner or great player.

Absolutely...being surrounded by good/great players makes you better...but recruiting the right type of player and coaching them up to a system built for them is the key.  Kehres' has been able to change the team strategy on both sides of the ball to adapt to the players strengths and not try to force the players into some pre-built system.  That's where I think the real secret is in all of this.

Pentello may be more physically gifted...I don't know.  But Kehres has been able to take Jorris and make him a perfect fit for the offense that he wants to run.  Isn't that really what's the most important factor.  How someone suceeds in the system their placed in?

Based on this assumption Jorris is my #1 QB.  As someone said...football is a team game...but I think it's more than that...it's a system and which players can excel at the highest level within that system will be the most successful and until someone builds a better system... Mount will continue to produce outstanding players and results.

+ karma for you. I could have sat at this computer for a week and not have summed up my thoughts any better than you did. Thank you.

Regardless if this discussion is interesting, pointless, or just plain stupid, at least we're talking football!

Back in the days when Ric kept a running tab on the incoming freshman each summer, it was fascinating to note the sheer volume of quarterbacks in each freshman class. These were not kids the D1's missed, but they were probably the smartest, most physically gifted, talented kids on their teams. Now most of these kids would never take a single snap from center but rather most became DB's, RB's or in the case of Randy Knapp, receivers.

It was said that Woody Hayes recruited HS QBs and FBs.  The QBs were his backs and the FB became linemen.

To make it sound as if Kehres throws a bunch of QB's at the wall in the hopes one sticks I just really don't even know how to comment about that.  I certainly hope what you said is not what you meant.

Clearly what I said isn't what you read. CWRU70 seems to have understood it.

Since I've been put in the middle here... I think Ric just wants to give LK more credit than "finds a diamond in the rough."  I think he thought your comment could be read as "if you throw a big enough net, you're bound to catch something."

Ugggh.  If you're trying to be funny, stop because you're not.  If you're trying to be accurate, stop because you're an idiot.

You're implying that LK fields a good team simply because he brings in enough random kids to accidently find 11 kids worth playing?  That might be one the dumbest statements ever on Post Patterns.

LK has big freshmen classes and big active rosters because he'll accept anyone who is willing to put in the effort and he doesn't cut.  Period.  Not because he doesn't knwo how to identify talent and recruit good players.

And in a year where MUC brought in one of their largest freshmen classes ever (120+/-), there is a whopping three (3) freshmen QB's.  And one of them is listed as a RB/QB, so there might be only 2 real freshman QB's.  That's quite a stamp collection!

I have a question for Mr. Ric.  Any word on Mr. Kuhn?  Did he enroll at Mt. after all and any possibility he might be  re thinking his decision  about playing possibly next year?
Just curious.

LK and the "O" staff look at a lot of film on all players coming in,,,they are heavily evaluated,,by more than one coach,,and many are observed live on friday nights,,so when they get to MUC for practice ,,,,a lot is known about them,,not much different than d1 ,,but the chance to bring in more ,,,and ,,,,LK finds a way to get the BEST 11 on the field !!

According to the "2006 Mount Union Tentative Football Numeric" roster, released just prior to the start of the season there were 9 QBs: 1 Sr., 2 Jr., 1 So., and 5 Fr.

I doubt there will be 5 Sr. QBs in 2009.  They will have changed positions or simply left the program.

Seventies' point was that many kids who played QB in high school come to Mount with hopes of doing the same, but end up in different positions where they can better contribute to the team, and in that he would be correct.

Perhaps he exaggerated a bit, but that's no reason to call him an idiot.
12-0 = 13

reality check

I think bringing in as many QB's as possible is a good move for any program.  ONU only has 2 freshmen QB's listed on the roster this year and one of the 2 is listed as a QB/DE.  Last year however I remember something like 9 freshmen QB's on the roster.  There are 5 Sophomore QB's listed from last year's crop.  That's the reason enough for me to bring in as many as you can.  Some find their way to other positions.  Some don't want to compete.  And if you have a position where you want the kid to have a competitive attitude I would think it is the signal caller.

ONU has 8 QB's on it's roster and I can bet you that Coach Paul and his staff would gladly take another couple to evaluate and develop as well.
