BW always plays Mount tough, especially on their cement field.I hear their home unies feature hot dog brown tops and a new bun colored pant. All with a mustard yellow piping and letters!Wally's Whanna Hot Dog artwork piece that previously adorned to roof of his resturant has been resurrected and now graces the area above the home football locker room.

OK useless fun facts for the defense

2006 YTD VS 2005 YTD

2. Rhodes               158.7                       NR
3. Mount Union       160.3                     193.2              #5 Better this year?
4. Curry                  161.9                     268.7                                                       #27

10.Trinity (Conn)    194.8                     162.3              #1 Play somebody
20 Capital              220.8                     226.2              #9
21 Ohio Northern   222.2 Buy a lotto  280.2              #33
26 WWW               227.2                      NR    You don't need defense!

Interesting to me anyway....Capital is 6yds per game better on defense and yet it gets them a 20th spot VS 9th last year.

Again better defense or weaker offense?

Lots of new defense teams and only 3 out of last years top 10 still listed YTD.

Hey Pat & Keith,

Nebraska Wesleyan!

Who are these guys?
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

Pat Coleman

They are dual NAIA/NCAA members who have declared NAIA for every year we've been around, hence we don't track them.

I think they've only played two D-III schools from 1999-present.

Sticking with the national statistics theme, here's a few more that I found interesting

TOTAL OFFENSIVE YARDS PER PLAY
1.   Mount Union = 8.70 yds/play
2.   Hardin Simmons = 7.38
3.   Springfield = 7.14
4.   Bridgewater VA = 6.88
5.   Capital = 6.81

TOTAL DEFENSIVE YARDS PER PLAY
1.   Rowan = 1.98 yds/play
2.   Mount Union = 2.71
3.   Rhodes = 2.91
4.   Curry = 3.12

TEAM RUSHING OFFENSIVE YARDS PER ATTEMPT
1.   Mount Union = 7.21 yds/carry
2.   Springfield = 6.60
3.   St. John's Fisher = 6.30
4.   Ferrum = 6.12
5.   Bridgewater VA = 5.94

TEAM PASSING YARDS PER ATTEMPT
1.   Mount Union = 10.88 yds/attempt
2.   Hardin Simmons = 9.97
3.   Wabash = 9.41
4.   Capital = 9.09
5.   Linfield = 8.37
6.   Marietta = 8.00

INDIVIDUAL YARDS PER RUSHING ATTEMPT
1.   Sharpe, Springfield = 8.18 yds/rush
2.   Kmic, Mount Union = 8.11
3.   Pitts, Ferrum = 7.32
4.   Robinson, St John's Fisher = 6.95
5.   Barber, Sul Ross State = 6.85
6.   Arcidiacono, Union (NY) = 6.37

The stat that sticks out to me the most is that the OAC has 3 of the top 6 passing yds/attempt offenses.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

reality check

I can't believe I'm posting a kicking statistic because it just makes me feel "dirty" but since this is stat week on the OAC board I'd like to recognize ONU's Jake Heaphy for his accomplishments thus far as a true freshman.

Heaphy is 6 for 7 in the field goal department so far connecting on 85.7% of his attempts but more impressive is the fact that he hasn't attempted a field goal inside 30 yards (3-4 from 30-39 and 3-3 from 40-49 with a long of 46).  From what I gathered he's the only OAC kicker that can claim that distinction.  Additionally he's perfect on extra points (again the only OAC kicker with that distinction).

This kid has been a very pleasant surprise and he wasn't even the top kicker coming into camp with the arrival of a OHSAA D-I first team kicker in the mix.  Heaphy has been a great addition and has paid dividends for a less explosive Polar Bear offense already.

So how about some more "under the radar" stats?

OK I'll join the list of poster with useless (fun) information

Mount is giving up an average of 6.5 yards per punt return on all FOUR punts. ;D

Congrats to your kicker RC!

All this talk of kicking and punting...and it being a Friday...caused me to do some digging.

One of my all-time favorite Mount stats comes from the 2002 season.  During the 14 game season (including playoffs)...Mount punted a total of 2 times and gave up 0 return yards.  Records come and go but that has to be an all-time NCAA record.  14 games...Zero return yards???

For Fun I checked a little deeper in the stat book.

Over the last five years (2001-2005) which covered 70 games for MUC.  Mount gave up a total of 405 punt return yards.  More amazing than that stat is that during the same time period...Mount kicked off 444 times.  Hard to fathom kicking off more than giving up a return yard.

Pat

It was just weird to see them show up in D3 stats with the NCAA.

Pat-
As much as I hate to disagree with you, I don't think Whitewater's title hopes went down with the injury like your caption on the front page wonders...I think their hopes went down when Mount Union announced that they would be playing the 2006 season.

RE: Whitewater

I seem to remember a story last year about another RB from the same HS as Beaver that was almost as good, maybe a year older.

They could have the depth to replace him.  Maybe Travis Reuland?

RE: ncaa stats.  I think Mount Union led the country in rush defense in 1996,,but that stat was for the regular season 10 games,, not including playoffs as they do now .

46.5 yds per game,,,and before the spread, one back offenses .

One thing to keep in mind when looking at the 2006 stats versus 2005 is the new clock rules.  I haven't seen an analysis done on D3 games, but in D-1A they're saying the new running clock has reduced the number of plays per game in the 12-15 range.

Per team or total?

Here we go again from the worthless but fun stats dept.

Total plays '06 YTD VS '05 YTD

Mount 06 384        Opponents 355
Mount 05 464        Opponents 375

This was kind of fun and scary too. There were two games, Wilma & Marietta, where the Raiders ran 93 plays in '05! And on three occassions the Raiders held the opponent to 66 plays JCU, OTT, and Cap. Three games in a row! Spookie.

So the Raiders have run 80 less plays this year to the opponents 20 YTD.

100 less plays over six games=16.666666666666666666666666666666666 less per game.

But how many centimeters???

In other news, I just read on the d3football.com notables page that Heidelberg has already announced that head coach Brian Cochran will not have contract renewed at the end of the season.  I wish for his sake that he would have had more luck in trying to make the Student Princes more respectable (well as respectable as a Student Prince can be).
about 73 or 74 centimeters per attempt.
