Thanks for researching that in your files.  Just shows you how far the memory starts fading, although I knew that Bucknell had played someone in DIII sometime between the '80's and '90's.

Anyway, Happy New Year to you and the rest on this board.  Have a great day.

MacLeod: In 1959 was loaned Paul Dietzel's LSU playbook in exchange for my promise to return it in the morning. I did but stayed up all night copying it by hand. Then in 1962 when I was at Michigan, it was useful in helping Michigan defeat Dietzel's Army team.

Frank, funny you should mention that LSU ballclub.  Wearing my LSU versus Notre Dame 1998 Tshirt today, when somebody at the breakfast counter brings up some guy called Boom Boom Canon or something the other from LSU in the 50s.  Do you know of whom I speak?

Former, picked up on the Baylor White Sox reference regarding Carrithers.  Thought you were making a tax joke for a minute.   :o

Wow, I feel like a pup on this board today and I saw Gail Sayers play in High School ;D

(Geez, I'm sorry, I was 14 at the time)

Who's she?

What, Pat, you never heard of Gale Sayers' sister, Gail? Shame on you!  ;)

MacLeod: In 1957-58 I had access to Charlie Caldwell's 283 page definitive tome on the single wing, "Modern Single Wing Football", published in 1951. Haven't seen it since. With the perspective of time, would like to look at it again in order to see whether it might cover overlooked potential for today's shotgun option. Probably a big city library would have it. Alternatively it could be bought through Amazon at antique prices. A project for the new year.

Of course, Caldwell's "modern single wing" would work nowadays adapted for the shotgun (or even on its own), especially with the bucklateral option. Dick Kazmeier worked it to perfection back in the mid-1950s, and there's no reason it couldn't work now. (And Caldwell's book is truly a football classic.)

BTW for all you greenhorns ... when I was born, FDR had been in office for all of three years.

I don't know if this is what you were referring to, but in the late-60s or early 70s, Bucknell played, and lost to, now-D3 Wittenberg. In that same era, Witt also beat Delaware. (Of course, at that time [pre-D3], NCAA "small colleges" could still offer athletic scholarships.)

Not surprisingly Delaware has well developed archives on its website. In the 60s, 70s and early 80s Delaware played Amherst, Gettysburg (several times), Baldwin-Wallace, Kings Point (several times) and Mississippi College and lost to Amherst and Gettysburg.

I'm not that smart! ;D  Actually, Ira T. Carrithers was the Head Football Coach (and Athletic Director) at Alma College in 1908 and 1909.  He left there in the spring of 1910, accepting the head football coach position at Know College (Galesburg, IL) where he coached for 3 years before moving on to become an assistant at the Univeristy of Illinois in 1913.  Thought you might enjoy that little (albeit perhaps irrelevant) piece of historical info. ;) ::)

There's a good reason why Delaware played Gettysburg a goodly number of times: in an earlier age, they were in the same league, the Middle Atlantic Conference University Division. Other members included the likes of Lehigh, Bucknell, and Lafayette.

Michigan sucks!

I couldn't script a better 2000th post than to simply agree with that statement.

But did anyone stay up and watch Boise State and Oklahoma?!?  Other than the Stagg Bowl I have watched two bowl games this bowl season and that BSU/OU game had to be one of the most exciting finishes I have ever seen at any level of play (high school, college, pro, backyard, intramural, you name it).  Incredible game....even if it was not D-III.
