If MUC had no football program, would those 200 spots be filled anyway?

In a heartbeat

The growth of Mount Union College and Mount Union football have occurred side-by-side, not one as the result of the other. I'm sure Larry will assure you that Past President Harold Kollenbrander gets the credit for who and what you see on campus today. Most of those improvements were financed by corporations and people who could care less about our beloved football program. But has having a successful football program helped? Without question.

Karma for seventies.

Mount has always had a strong relationship with corporations that offer matching funding for improvements and expansion of the campus. Those additional funds come from alumni and friends. The idea that Mount is some kind of football factory first and academics takes a back seat can be totally dispelled by the graduation rate of those same football players.

As I understand LK's most proud accomplishment is the graduation rate of his players. Those players then become contributors to the overall growth of Mount in the future. Successful graduates perpetuate the continued growth of the college. No doubt their success on the field does help them when they hit the real world too.

I don't think it is a Football Factory first.  I just think that the sucess of the football program has brought more attention to the college which has made it easier to get alumni and corporations to donate to the school.

Thanks Frank, I didn't know that.   But Illinois always claims Lincoln even thought he wasn't born there.

Frank,

I can't speak for Monroe, but I'm pretty sure that the rest of Michigan would say 'you want Custer, you got him'!

(As one of my favorite road signs says (either North Dakota or Wyoming, can't recall which) "Custer was healthy when he left here").

In my opinion Larry Kehres is responsible in large part for the exceptional state of the college today. However, past Presidents and Boards of Trustees, who exercised strict fiscal management, and a very loyal alumni base, set the stage.Mount Union College is known nationally today because of Larry Kehres.Uribe..Not far from Alliance is New Rumly,Ohio where a national monument to the Custer family is located on the foundation of the Custer home. It' a great exhibit.Say what you want about them but Custer and especially Grant were heros of the Civil War and played large parts in the Union victory.

Smuckers Peanut Butter does not hold a candle to JIF
I think Smuckers bought JIF a couple years ago.

Correctamondo, Smuckers owns JIF.  For interesting company history visit link below.

Can any other board top this?  Talking about peanut butter?  :P

And such exquisite timing, too!  Jif has just had to recall millions of jars due to salmonella contamination>

Peter Pan and Walmart's Great Value Peanut Butter recalled all over the south.  We had a jar of the Wal Mart brand.

Capital's mens hoops wins the OAC tourney and punches their ticket to the "big dance."  They knocked off JCU in the final after the two shared the regular season title.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the Cap women's hoops, as they lost earlier in the day to Wilma in the final of the OAC women's tourney.

As a former Asst. FB coach at Mount Union in the mid-60's, I think you need to give retired Head Coach Ken Wable some credit in your discussions about the superiority of MUC.
He took over a program that was a perennial loser in the OAC and built it into a winner.  Kehres was one of his QB's and later an assistant coach.
When LK became the head coach, he also became the recipient of a new school president named Harold Kollenbrander.
Kollenbrander wanted to spend money on bricks and concrete in order to improve the physical facilities at MUC.  He also understood that every FB player pays tuition and probably brings 3 or 4 male and female students with him.
Kollenbrander understood that winning begets winning.  I am sure he would have fired Kehres if he had not won.  He would have found a coach that could win.  That was the way he was.
However, bottom line, Ken Wable set the groundwork for all of this to take place.  He gets too little credit, in my opinion. (Muc's first undefeated season and OAC championship came under Wable's guidance.)

Sorry but that was Peter Pan and Great Value (Wal-Mart), neither of which tastes nearly as good as Jif!! ;D ;D  Jif is the peanut butter that is good enough to go in the brownies when needed!

For those peanut butter aficionados who care: Peter Pan brand and Great Value brand peanut butters were recently subject to recall and both are made by ConAgra Foods. Jif brand peanut butter has not been recalled and is made by Smucker which acquired the Jif brand in 2002 from Procter & Gamble, which in its turn started the Jif brand in 1958. Them are the facts - which brand is the best is not fact but is an opinion. Don't look to me for guidance on that subject.
