Amen, RC, all this talk about peanut butter and history is making me sick, even though I love history and the way Woody would compare football to it, anyway, lets get to some football! Spring practice starts when?

As a former Asst. FB coach at Mount Union in the mid-60's, I think you need to give retired Head Coach Ken Wable some credit in your discussions about the superiority of MUC.
He took over a program that was a perennial loser in the OAC and built it into a winner.  Kehres was one of his QB's and later an assistant coach.
When LK became the head coach, he also became the recipient of a new school president named Harold Kollenbrander.
Kollenbrander wanted to spend money on bricks and concrete in order to improve the physical facilities at MUC.  He also understood that every FB player pays tuition and probably brings 3 or 4 male and female students with him.
Kollenbrander understood that winning begets winning.  I am sure he would have fired Kehres if he had not won.  He would have found a coach that could win.  That was the way he was.
However, bottom line, Ken Wable set the groundwork for all of this to take place.  He gets too little credit, in my opinion. (Muc's first undefeated season and OAC championship came under Wable's guidance.)
+karma to felson and props to Coach Wable.

Let me add my second to the applause for Felson's remarks. Coach Wable took over a program that was fighting to stay out of the OAC cellar  (a much larger conference then) and brought it to respectiblity. Actually in Felson's day around the program, Mount was a Track school. Anyways, Runyr and I appreciate having somebody older than us on the board. ;D

I am still 10 years younger than my good friend Ken Wable. ;D

RC,
I just checked the calendar.  It's 188 days until kickoff.   I'm going to go into withdrawal.

70's Raider - MUC was a track school in the 60's and 70's, because it was one of the few schools in the OAC that gave need-based financial aid to track and field athletes.  They were "preferred" students back then, and had asterisks by their names when they were considered by the financial aid committee, just like FB and BKB players.
Muskingum, BW, and Wittenberg were the OAC powers then.  None of them did that for track and field.  Their track teams got athletes from FB and BKB on a "loaner" basis.

Seldom in my academic career was the word "preferred" used in conjunction with my name. I'm sure Coach Wuske never said it. ;D

BTW It was an awesome experience to bring my little track team to Alliance for an indoor track meet last Friday night and show them Wuske's picture on the wall in the fieldhouse.

If something is older than dirt, how old is it exactly?   ;)

So it what was his reasoning behind keeping Lee Hood around?
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

Just FYI, both Capital (automatic berth) and JCU (at-large) made the D3 hoops tourney.  Cap plays Centre (Ky) at Wooster, with the winner facing the Wooster-Transylvania (Ky) winner.

JCU hosts Westminster and the winner will travel to play at Lake Erie.

Wilma is the only women's team that made it.

There is some funny stuff going on with the brackets on the men's side.  Check out d3hoops for all the info and to follow the OAC as they (hopefully) progress through the basketball championships.

As average as Coach Hood is, he stands as one of the winningest coaches in the modern era and the only one to get to the post season. He certainly has a better winning percentage than did President Giese during his brief coaching stint :o

Small but Slow

Mount Union is probably not supporting other academic programs with income from the football team, but it probably isn't losing money either.  Most of the corporate donors would still support the college if the football team went 0-10, but its success may influence a few or at least create name recognition when called upon for a pledge.  I am not aware of any national corporations who sponsor Mount Union Football solely the way they do major and even mid-major universities.  Florida has everything from official orange juice to frozen pizza, wireless phone provider, and automobile sponsor.  Their uniforms would look like a NASCAR race car if the NCAA permitted.

JK

SBS,

Most colleges these days, even D3 schools, have some sort of contract/ sponsorship agreement with one of the "big three" shoe companies (Nike, Reebok, or Adidas) to provide uniforms and shoes for thier athletic programs.

Outside of that, I wouldn't assume that any small colleges are sponsored by any national corporations.  Although many local businesses, including branches of national corporations, like banks, insurance agencies, etc. tend to support small colleges and advertise in their media guides.
