Quote from Ashland HC Lee Owens (Div II) in today's Canton Repsitory:

http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?Category=17&ID=345971&r=10&subCategoryID=

This, for example, was Owens renouncing interest in an NCAA Division I assistant coaching offer:
"I'm just not interested in any of that right now. I've been a coach at Ohio State. I've been a head coach in Division I.

"I really see this thing at Ashland moving forward in a way, with the momentum we have right now, that we could have the kind of program Larry Kehres has at Mount Union."

Another part of this article:
In retrospect, he is encouraged that his team has come close to beating Grand Valley - the Mount Union of Division II - in each of the last two years.

kirasdad,
I love that: "the Mount Union of Division II."
And in other news, it looks like Florida is on track to become the Mount Union of Division I basketball.  ;)

According to Owens' speech at the HOF Luncheon, a local boy is returning home and will attend MUC.  Can never have too many fast RB's ;D

....Running back Scott Thomas, the West Branch speedster who saw action in a 45-14 season-ending win over Gannon, was projected to receive more playing time in his sophomore season but has transferred to Mount Union.

"It was a health issue (in his family) and he wanted to be closer to home," said Owens. "He has a family member working at Mount Union, so he can go there for free."

Thomas, 6-0 and 200 pounds, played running back against Gannon, rushing 12 times for 34 yards and catching one pass for a 44-yard touchdown.

"Scott has great speed and we were looking forward to playing him quite a bit," noted Owens. "He's a good kid who has a chance to help Larry."

The bit from the ND blog is hilarious...  Ric was probably salivating as his two favorite teams would be matching up, until he realized it was all a ruse!  :)

Any other Ohioans out there getting sick of losing to Florida??

Smiling Lee Owens also said when asked if he would schedule MUC for an early season game,  I would like to but my schedule is already booked for many years to come.  I  believe his schedule will always be booked.  However he passed on Mt. in a nice way unlike the cow coach who just simply said he would not play MUC because he would get his butt kicked.   What a leader, what an inspiration; only play people you can beat.

Shhhh.  Don't tell him it's a joke.  He called me 5 times yesterday discussing the match-up and how he could make some extra cash scalping tickets when ND comes to town.

Hey HSCoach....considering the current state of both programs I could see you having this game as a "pick em" right?   ;D

HScoach

With the current production of the Irish defense, I'm not sure a Pick-em would be right either. ;D

Bushman...take it easy on Coach Owens. He's an admirer of the Purples and LK and never misses a chance to mention the Raiders.Owens brought his staff over to meet LK and said he did so to see how they did it.I ,for one, hope they never play. The fact is Coach Owens is a good leader and Ashland is lucky to have him,and he them.

I think Bushman was making fun of the Wooster (COW) coach, not Coach Owens.

Mount Union's football team has begun putting together a monthly newsletter and any Mount fans or anyone interested can get the first edition on my site.  This edition includes the final ring design for the '06 national championship.

Also, any former players that would like to be added to the mailing list of the coaches please contact me.

In addition, we've put together a complete Ohio Athletic Conference preview which includes an indepth at each of the OAC teams and predictions for the '07 season.  It will be available tomorrow, which marks four months from camp opening in August.

Rumor mill also has ONU getting a stud HS QB as well:

Kyle Simmons (Orrville)
3,000+ yds/31 TD's passing
near 1,000 rushing and 15 TD's

Does anyone remember is Orrville and Dover played in the last couple years?  If both rumors are true, it would add an interesting twist if they battled in HS too.

Yeah.  I hope the rumor is indeed true.  Cuz Kyle Simmons be from Orrville; home of flavorful jellies, jams and Bobby Knight and we all know, that'd make the P-Bears "Simply the best".
