WELSH, LONGTIME COACH, AD, TO RETIRE

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Eight university presidents have come and gone at Capital University since Roger Welsh was hired as baseball coach and assistant football coach in 1975.

Welsh, the current athletic director, yesterday announced he will retire Dec. 31.

"This just seems to be the right time for me," he said. "I'm going to enjoy the first semester. It will be fun seeing the kind of success our student-athletes and coaches are having. You never think the day will come when you step away, but it's time to move on."

Sports information director Leonard Reich said Welsh, 65, was the perfect leader.

"Roger has done his part for king and country here, and things certainly will be very different," Reich said. "Roger has spoiled us. Roger has been such a great man for Capital."

No current administrator has served longer in Ohio Athletic Conference athletics.

After growing up in Grandview, Welsh was a record-setting football and baseball player at Muskingum. He graduated in 1964 and became a baseball and football coach at the College of Wooster for eight years.

Welsh made his most important mark at Capital, leading the Crusaders to their only conference football championship, in 1987. In the mid-'90s, , he initiated one of the most aggressive building campaigns in school history that included the funding, planning and designing of the $20 million Capital Center, which opened in 2001.

Oh good.

So the 2007 campaign motto is: "One for the other thumb."

And in 2008 we can expect: "We'll have as many rings as we've had presidents."

RC, I like your '08 slogan.  Much better than what I was planning to do:

"2008 - One for the big toe!"

I'm new to the Forum, so take it easy on me.
Question: MUC has dominated D3 Football over the years. Has there ever been talk about them, maybe moving up to D2? I know there is a lot more to Universities than just football, but I wonder if moving up a Division was ever discussed, even if it was just for Football.

Only by fans of opposing teams who can't compete.

Seriously, beaten to death. And you can't move up a division just for football -- not allowed.

I applaud ette for their opening game.  In order to be the best ,you must play the best.  Perhaps the  COW football coach would like to chime in on that train of thought.  ::)

Speaking of topics that have been beaten to death...

I think there are a couple constants we can always count on:

1.  COW/MUC isn't happening anytime soon.
2.  Yellow and brown will never look good on anybody.....EVER.
3.  Larry Kehres will be the first football coach in NCAA history to wear flip-flops if he wishes to show off his entire collection of championship rings. (props to hscoach)
4.  The academic NCAC card will always get played by someone.
5.  The "move MUC up" argument will always find its way into the mix by someone.

RC brought it up...
and since he brought up No. 4, the NCAC academic card, I'll mention something related I've never seen mentioned on the board.
Half the OAC schools have graduate and professional programs.  Few if any NCAC schools have graduate programs.  (Oberlin has a handful of graduate students at best.)  The NCAC is made up exclusively of undergraduate liberal arts colleges (whether they call themselves colleges or not).  Most OAC schools have a broader, more inclusive mission regarding academic pursuits.
Sure, graduate students aren't typically playing on OAC football teams, but PBK key members probably aren't numerous on NCAC football teams either.
Many PharmDocs at ONU or law students at CU & ONU should hold their own against PBK's of the NCAC.
PS - Harvard recently chose their first woman president.  They chose someone who got her undergraduate degree from a college that chooses NOT to have a PBK chapter.
(Yes, this is a quiz: name her alma mater and win +k.  Hint: it's a prestigious all women's college.)

Personally I think they missed a great opportunity at Bryn Mawr.  Being an all-female institution, they should go for another owl nickname.  How about the Bryn Mawr Hooters?
