JCU is changing to a different website that isn't linked with jcu.edu... jcusports.com starts on tuesday.

Gotta give Petro and the boys some credit with a great game on Saturday. What's nice for carroll is that they have two qb's this year that have expierence, in Petro and Kirbus. Tough choice for Regis and the boys, but having Petro back there with the threat of run or pass will give teams some problems.

Any update if Trusnik is going to make the practice squad?

Formerd3db-Thanks for that link, I'm still crying. I don't know whether the son or the father is more inspirational. I think every father with a kid younger than 16 needs to see that. Thanks again.

Actually I want to go wake up both my kids and kick their underacheiving butts. :D :D :D

The OAC goes 3-3 in week one.

There are two shutouts (you're slackin' Mount Union) out of three wins.

I don't know what's up with JCU's website (might be getting redesigned) but finding the varsity teams is a nightmare.  I hope it's just temporary because the website navigation stinks right now.  I was able to get game stats and see that the score is very indicative of the result.  JCU outgained COW 433 to 185.  Time of possession was 36:30 to 23:30.  Petruziello might be fun to watch this year at the QB position.

Anyone think that BW might be nervous seeing Augie putting up 65 points on MacMurray???  538 rushing yards for Augie on 62 attempts.  Not a single rusher eclipses 100 yards on the day.  In fact, Augie only lost 3 yards on negative rushing attempts.  I'd be nervous if I was a Jacket fan.

The Assmann era begins with a win but it looks like a whole new ballgame in Bexley.  Capital shuts down the Wittenberg offense but only manages 258 yards of total offense or to put another way: 21 yards less total offense than Rocky Pentello averaged per game passing in 2006.  Assmann appears to be a dual threat though.  Senior AA Derrick Alexander has zero catches in the opening game?!?  I guess that OSU receiver Riddick is not on the team now.  He was in the media guide but not listed on the online roster.

Both teams defenses put on a good show though.

I fell asleep at the CAP game, as their offense looked very anemic.  They had trouble running the fball, and Assmann wasn't able to stretch the field, so WITT stuffed the box all night.  They had a few drives where they could of put a few td's on the board, but couldn't capitalize on a few, and settled on a fg's on a few as well.  You could tell they were a very young team.  Alexander didn't play (hence the 0 catches), as he tore a tendon in the back of his foot in camp.  More than likely he's out for the season, but they're hoping it will recover on its own.  CAP's Defense set the tone in this game, as they will have to all year in order to win fball games in Belxley.  CAP's offense has two weeks to prepare for the OAC, so tighten that chin strapp Assmann, b/c it doesn't get any easier (though they have Wimington & Berg next).

You are welcome.  Yes, it hit me hard too; guess we're from the same "old school" and era ;).  Anyway, I know what you mean.  Hope you enjoy the remainder of this Labor Day and, of course, any of the Mount games you go to.  I won't wish them luck since they won't need it ;D  Hopefully, September's weather will remain all month like it has this weekend.

One word describes St. John's, super. They have a super campus, stadium, team and fans. The campus is beautiful. The stadium has a Division I feel. The programs are top notch. They remind me of programs I have gotten at Division I or pro games. The crowd was electric, had to be around 8,000 people. The pregame show over the loud speakers was nice too. Their team was hitting on all cylinders. The only negative might be their running game, even though it was good enough to keep the defense on its heels. The QB is the real deal. His timing and scrambling abilities were definitely his strong points. Several times he looked like he was running for his life but then he would stop, find a wide open receiver downfield , and hit him almost effortlessly. Even the 2nd and 3rd teams had success. The fans were wonderful, Pat, you would have been proud. They met me as soon as I arrived. They were very hospitable, special thanks to Raiderguy and Johnnie Red. The jello-shots and hamburgers were great. I can definitely see why good players want to come there and play. A real top-notch and classy program. Their coach had their team well prepared and instead of running the score as high as he could, he substituted a lot. It really didn't matter until the 3rd or 4th strings got in there against most of our starters. I'm glad I made the trip and I'm happy that my son got to experience it.

The one word that describes Marietta at this time, UGLY. Offensively the only bright spot I saw was the ability of Ryan Dawson. He had his man burnt a few times deep early in the game but the QB at the time couldn't connect. Everyone else was pretty much a non-factor. Marietta's offense consisted of Dawson and STJ's penalties. Defensively our new DB's, which I knew was our weakness, were stuggling all day. I do give credit to STJ's receivers, they made some very nice catches. Even though it appeared we were bigger, STJ's was very much faster. Speed kills and STJ's had more speed on both sides of the ball. I am also a firm believer that games are won and lost in the trenches. Without any doubt, STJ's won that war. The real question, is STJ's that good or is Marietta that bad. I believe that STJ's is that good. They are legitimately a top 3 team. If they play MU this year, I will try and be there. I think Marietta's coaching staff has a lot of work to do, including personnel evaluations.

Prior to this game, several posters stated their opinions based on last year's team. I wanted to be optimistic and believe the Pios would be competitive based on this year's team. I was wrong. I, however, still believe the Pios will be in the middle of the OAC at the end. There is a big difference between STJ's and most of the teams in the OAC. As always, Goooooo Pios!

Nyjets.com announced their practice squad today and Jason Trusnik has made the list.  He will contrinue to work with the green and white and develop as an outside backer.

Kcreds,

I heard from some people who interviewed with Marietta about possible coaching positions and they told me that Marietta is having financial cutbacks within their athletic department? And that they would be cutting back a lot of money that would help with recruiting and forcing coaches to coach more than just one sport. Any truth to that?

Good to hear Trusnik is still playing strong. Congrats to him!

Spence

You'll have to be more specific than that. Coaches have coached more than one sport at Marietta since the first sport was coached there (primarily assistant coaches now do this). It's pretty common in Division III AFAIK.

Here's what is true. Since 2000...

The athletics department has grown by more than 100 athletes. It's added cross country and track and field.

The Dyson-Baudo Center was completed, providing indoor practice facilities and a new basketball facility, as well as coaches' offices and the like.

Modern new tennis, softball and soccer competition fields and facilities were completed.

The College bought Don Drumm Field from the city with an eye toward renovating and modernizing it.

The current athletic director will be stepping down to move to the Advancement office to head up the next capital campaign, during which the college plans to raise $50 million.

The McCoy Athletic Center was completed, housing football offices and team facilities.

That doesn't sound like a cash-strapped operation to me. I will admit to be pretty far from the pulse of things these days (about 8 hours driving to be exact), but to me the college has done a better job than it ever has of setting its programs up facility-wise for success. It's up to the coaches (and the financial aid office!) now.

And even if finances were to become an issue at some point down the line, that's not a show stopper. Marietta's baseball program wasn't built with college money and could never have been built with college money.

kcreds

Thanks Spence, your response was a lot more informative than mine would have been. I haven't heard anything about financial cuts.

Mr. Ypsi

Spence,

Marietta plays baseball?!  I hadn't heard. ;D

[Sorry - 'out-of-left-field' dig from one d3baseball.com poster to another. :P]

Thanks for the clearification.

...... The real question, is STJ's that good or is Marietta that bad......

BOTH.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Hey Kcreds!

I sent you a PM, but just in case you didn't see it (and aren't IGNORING me).......did a kid from North Canton named Seth Allman get any playing time on Saturday?  I had heard he was getting PT due to a junior speed guy being hurt.  How did he do?

Thanks!

kcreds

skunks_sidekick, I got your email and responded. Evidently you didn't receive it. The coaches like Seth's speed and I did see him play Saturday but to be honest, no one but WR Dawson impressed me. I believe Seth will see a lot of action for a freshman.

Below is a quote from our favorite MUC hater Gregg Easterbrook (ESPN Page2 TMQ).

"Running Up the Score Watch: Taking a 70-10 lead over Division 1-AA cupcake opponent Murray State at the middle of the third quarter, heavily favored Louisville did not attempt another pass. Leading Averett 75-7 with two minutes remaining, facing third-and-goal, heavily favored Mount Union knelt twice to avoid scoring again. These instances of sportsmanship merit noting because good-sport behavior has become so rare in college football. Consider the Boise-Weber collision. Leading Division 1-AA cupcake Weber State 49-0 at intermission, heavily favored Boise State attempted 16 passes in the second half, including a pass with just 1:15 remaining in the game while ahead 56-7. What terrible sportsmanship! All the good vibes Boise State earned with its BCS bowl upset of Oklahoma will disappear fast if coach Chris Petersen becomes known for trying to humiliate lesser teams by running up the score."

At least he states MUC tried to avoid running up the score. Last year he accused MUC of "poor sportmanship" - this year they exhibit "good sport behavior". What a turn around 1 year makes.
