reality check

Let's face it.  If he didn't have access to box scores via the school and other media outlets, he wouldn't have anything to report on other than the final score.  He makes his opinions based solely on whatever limited account he reads of a game.  I would bet if LK and MUC had a choice, they wouldn't have even wanted to score a record 52 in the first quarter.  The Raiders probably had to game plan for the second half "not to score" which is a weird scenario for any coach to deal with.

I'd also be willing to be media "MUC-haters" of the past are starting to change their tunes as the internet evolves and gives easier access to the play-by-play's and box scores.  It wasn't long ago that all you could find on the web following a game was a final score.  I'd think MUC ran Averett up too if I only knew the score.

I'm probably in the large minority that wouldn't have minded Mount running up the score. Sure it's "poor sportsmanship" and the like, but from a fan's perspective it's just fun to see how far they can go.

Mount Union (shocker, I know) is among teams discussed in this week's Around the Nation podcast. It's a wrapup of the interesting stories on the national scene, plus a chance to hear our opinions about teams:

I don't care who plays who or what the score is. If a coach wants to pass in the final seconds leading by 100 then I have no problem with that as long as it is the subs doing it. No player, especially 3rd and 4th strings, should be told to lay down. IMHO all coaches should have that philosophy. Its not about sportsmanship in my opinion but about giving players who normally don't get to play a chance to show their stuff. If you limit the play calling then they can't show their full potential. A perfect example was STJ and Etta. The game was well in hand and STJ's coach put in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings and passed. I have no problem with that. Etta left in a lot of starters and I don't have a problem with that either, if his goal is to keep the game from a huge blowout and continue to evaluate players. I do however feel at some point in time Etta should have played everyone on the O or D side, which didn't happen. I only consider it running up the score if the starters are doing all the scoring. I am never in favor of sending athletes out on the field and telling them don't score or play hard.

Couldn't help but notice the second Raider QB was track star Cecil Shorts .What impressed me was his poise. He got the call from LK in front of the team and home crowd, and then went in and looked relaxed and confident.Very smooth;reminded me of Gary Frost.Pat will note how right I was(again) and lift me off the JV team.

Pat Coleman

I think you've been off the JV for a little while already.

Nice job with that Pat.  Really nice.

Anyone else going to B-W - Augie this Sat?  I'm thinking about it.  Should be a good one.

Pat Coleman

At least he states MUC tried to avoid running up the score. Last year he accused MUC of "poor sportmanship" - this year they exhibit "good sport behavior". What a turn around 1 year makes.

Do you think Easterbrook might have changed his tune a little after last year when MUCs fans flamed him for his ill informed cheap shots?
As for running up the score...tell that lineman to fall on the blocked punt....dont run it in.                        AINT GONNA HAPPEN! I bet his momma was calling all the relatives from the stands.
And on the 100 yard pickoff....that kid isnt going to step out off bounds at the 1 for LK or any body else. nor would I ;)  Think of those as "gifts" from the other team. It would be impolite to ignor the generosity of the givers.

Those that think MT players did wrong against Averett need to grow up. The Averett parents and fans that were there know what happened and we aren't complaining, so why are others complaining. Mount Union did what they had to do and reacted to Averett mistakes and opportunities. The line man that scored on the block punt and the player returning the interception 100 plus yards have something they can remember for years to come and no one can take it away from them. I say again, MT was very professional and treated Averett with respect. Thank you. For the rest of you, if you can't take it, don't go to Alliance.

I wonder if you'd still feel that way after week 10 if LK approached the game this way?  I somehow think not.
