It was a setup for our resident ONU fan ... any time now ...

Sorry I'm slacking....gameday for my freshmen.

So umm, for that "reality check"...

Pentello was a better QB than Vrable.  Pentello is the most important player in Capital football history but his absence will be felt less than Vrable's who was at best the third best Pioneer football player in the last 20 years.

Happy now Pat?!?   ;)

Vrable was better than (other than obviously Brown and Weikart, who you were probably thinking of) Olivea, Couhig (etc. you get the idea the group I'm talking about, there were probably others on the defense that I'm just not recalling), Sidick? Not saying yes or no, just saying that that statement says maybe a little more than you think it does.

It's that group that gives me and no doubt others hope that Marietta can again get to a point where it's competitive with the top of the conference.

FWIW, I think it would be great, and deserved, to see Mount Union in the top 25 some week, but I don't look for it unless they beat Appalachian State. Or Michigan. :)

I was referring to Brown and Sasu.  I put them above Weikart and the rest you mentioned.

As a JCU supporter I am glad to see that Petro is playing well. I think that he is going to have an excellent year, barring any injury. I am pretty sure that he won't be cleared to play if he suffers a few more concussions.

Brad Petro is back in the OAC?   ;)

After making a statement as crazy as "Marietta is the best team SJU will see", you're calling me the mentally challenged one?  Yikes.

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Well, according to Pioneer lore, Kenneth (the lore is corrected) Sasu is the OAC career rushing leader with 4,727 yards during his career years of 1997-2000 while averaging 5.4 yds/carry.

I thought Mount might have someone higher, but Dan Pugh is listed as the career leader at 4,012 yards.

If post-season doesn't count, Sasu may have a chance to hang onto the record.  Otherwise, Kmic may hit 10,000 yards!

Reaching back another ten years into the archives, here are a couple other standout Pioneers...

1977 Charlie Black (DB) was the OAC Defensive Player of the Year and led the nation in Kick-off Returns.  He finished his career with 19 interceptions.

1978 Steve James (LB) was the OAC Defensive Player of the Year.  He was also a four time OAC wrestling champion.

According to Pioneer lore his name was and still is Kenneth Sasu.

Here's this week's friendly reminder to post your picks.

With roughly 80% of the picks in, the Lock of the Week is clearly Otterbein (93%) over Defiance (7%).  Wow did I miss that one!

Pick-Em of the Week is C. Newport versus Mary Hardin Baylor at an even 50/50.  Close behind are Millikin (53%) over ONU (47%) and Heidelberg (53%) over Oberlin (47%).

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

I get paid to banter with thirteen year olds all day. I don't need to do it for free on here. :D

And PS I think I apologized for my uninformed assertion after the game

Hey Ric,

Don't be mad at me too with the stepchild comment.

Actually, I thought that was pretty funny.  And I assumed you meant nothing more than I was probably sticking up for Ric.

Presto

looks like its going to be wet on the magic carpet today in berea.  wonder how that will change augie's runnnig attack, more effective or slippery? should give us a good indication of where both teams are early in the year.

shouldn't have much of an effect on Augie. their running game is pretty North South. If anything, a wet surface is a bit more challenging for the defense against Augie. THe Wing T usually isolates a LB or DL without much help to execute their responsibility (the misdirection forces the defense to play assignment football and limits the "swarm the football" help ).  It's my observation that this is effective in isolating less talented players  but a defense the quality of BW shouldn't be affected significantly.

I came into the week thinking Augie is a slam dunk to cover the spread in Pickems but after analyzing this more I am not so sure. Augie has lost at least 1 non conference game almost every year for the last decade. They seem to start slow. Plus there are reports of unrest in Rock Island (players quitting in camp, etc). It is Augie's 2nd game vs BW's first. I'll heistantly stick with my prediction of Augie winning or losing by less than the 6.5 spread. Augie by 3 17-14.
