I'm still holding out some hope for '07...and praying for the defense to improve.  Why I'm not throwing in the towel....

Game one: Emory & Henry vs Saint John's...enough said.

Game two: Did any long-time OACers really think the Pioneers could make it four in a row over the Jackets?  Actually played decent on the green cement.

Game three:  Played ugly both years vs Otterbein and lost both.

Defense gave up obscene yards in the passing game last year and it continues this year.  The only two teams not to pass for over 100 last year...Muskingum and MUC.  Of course, Mount was busy rushing.

Vrable was a playmaker in '06.  With over 400 yards of offense against Otterbein, I believe there are some playmakers on offense in '07.

Wish Hiram, Oberlin, Wooster, Denison had not left the league and one of them was coming to town instead of Capital.  Speaking of Cap, I like the video highlights on their website.  Puts them ahead of Mount on something!!

D3 Poster: I agree with your posts. I really thought the last couple of years they turned things around. I have lived most of my life less than 5 minutes from the field and I have seen the improvement over the last couple years. They did show some promise against BW but they have yet to be really competitive in a game. I thought the matchup with OTT was even. The defense looked good against BW. OTT's Senior QB I'm sure played a huge role leadership wise and #9 was an awesome receiver. The problem was the defense didn't make OTT punt once until late second half. The offense continues to turn the ball over. I haven't thrown in the towell and jumped ship but they better hurry up and find themselves to salvage this season. Jr. is staying positive and he really likes Coach Wiese and the other coaches. He moved back home for financial and academic reasons. He is good friends with some of the playmakers I believe you were alluding to and wants to help the team win. More importantly he wants to get into a federal law enforcement internship which Marietta is popular for.

There is no doubt the NCAC is a weaker conference than the OAC. I respect the Marietta players for not quitting and I also respect the players in both the NCAC and OAC bottom tier for their dedication to their sport. They all are adapting to adversity and being stronger for it. I'll still be at every game rooting hard for the Pios to win. Lets Go Pios!

Is there a defensive backfield in D3 that can cover Mount's receivers?

Rascal, yes there is.  But that team hasn't been put together yet....Aztec Bowl team would put up a fight..

If there is one constant in OAC Post Patterns, it's that idiots will come and go by the year.  And based on previous history means that Kcreds Jr. will transfer somewhere else next year so we don't have to hear Sr.'s crap.

and that one constant always seems to piss of Ric....or "The Ric" as one yahoo put it a long time ago....anyone remember who that poster was?  My guess is doeder..

Speaking of Doeder, anyone heard from 4u?

Haven't been to a Mount game but a girl I work with just graduated from there.  She went to as many games as she could while in school in Alliance.  She said this by far is the best team she's seen.  I figure if she knows this much about football (especially being a girl) she may be onto something.  Too bad she's way too young for me   :-[

Concerning MUC's scoring . Lou Holtz often said something like this ,,, it was the opponents job to keep the score close,, not his

Genius Gone Bad

I would have to say I agree with RC on this one.  I have no problem with a team putting up points if their 4th stringers are in.  I would be very upset if the game is out of hand and a team keeps dialing up a play you can't stop.  Thats classless to do that on a 4th down. As for Mount I hold LK to high respects and I think after catching a lot of heat for scoring 70 points after the 52 point first quarter.  I think he did the right thing so his kids didn't have to hear crap about them scoring.  I'm sure LK doesn't want to ever run it up on a team and If you have your 4th 5th and 6th stringers in and you keep scoring I see no problem with that, but i do if you have a play that they can't stop and you call it on 4th down.

Capital is playing really well.  Assmann has settled in, the D hasn't given up a TD and hopefully Alexander is healthy for the tough stretch in Oct-Nov.

My question is this....where would MU 2nd team or JV team finish in the OAC?

Being that none of the coaches talked to him after he missed that kick, I wouldn't be surprised if the miss wasn't on purpose.  After all, Scott Thomas ran out of bounds at the 1 yard line TWICE on break away runs.  Which by the way, would have been his first TD ever in purple.

The lengths at which LK goes to not score still amazes me.
Firstly, I would like to say I don't have a problem with the decisions LK makes or the ridiculous numbers that Purple Raider offense puts up.  It's incredible and admirable.  And I can't begin to imagine having to find ways to "not score".  But I wonder as an opposing coach or player, if you'd rather have the Raiders continue to score or kick field goals on first down.  Seeing a back veer out of bounds on back to back plays so as to "not score" is perhaps worse than giving the score up in general.

My team played a superior opponent the other week and we lost by 41 but our offense was able to put up 33 points on them offensively.  They ran the same play for TD so many times and our kids just didn't make the adjustments necessary.  I wasn't upset that they kept scoring on my kids, I was however upset that they insisted on running that play when the game was out of hand and there was no reason to exploit my team's weaknesses.  They were knealing to kill the clock and we called TO, down 35 points, to force a 4th down punt so our third team kids could get a couple snaps on offense.  They responded by running that play following the TO on 4th down for another TD.  Had they scored any other way, I wouldn't have cared.  I wonder if opposing coaches would feel similarly when MUC deliberatly avoids scoring.  I'd rather give up a TD to a 4th string TB than to watch a 4th string TB try not to score on my kids.
In contrast to that extreme here is an experience I saw first hand

In high school we were getting beat by a team with a vastly better program the first week of the season.  with a few minutes left in the fourth quarter they were up 56-0 and still had the first team in which scored again making it 63-0.  On the ensuing kickoff they still had first teamer speicalties in and we ran it back for a touchdown and we went for two making it 63-8.  After the kickoff they kept their first team in.  We got a fumble on first down and then scored a couple plays later making it 63-16 with another two point conversion.  After the game the quote by the other coach was that he was going to put in the second team until we went for two on the first touchdown.  He didn't think that was a sportsmanship like thing to do.  He also didn't like that we kept our first team in the whole game so he decided to do the same.  Well to make a long story short we only had 23 kids on the whole squad including freshman.  Our heaviest kid went 205 and they had a running back that ran all over us that went 235 lbs.  So we didn't really have a second team to put in.

joelmama,

Is there a defensive backfield in D3 that can cover Mount's receivers?
I think that Cap's DBs have the best chance of anyone on the schedule.  James Starks is all-OAC in his own right and he will likely draw responsibility for Garcon.  Matt Coleman, a senior with lots of experience is the other CB.  The problem with Mount's receivers, even against a good-to-great Cap defensive backfield is that you have to have safety help over the top, especially against Garcon.  This does two things: 1) opens up the running game, which is why Kmic has had huge days against us in the past and 2) opens up the underneath routes in the passing game.

The way you stop that is to get a good pass rush and get to Micheli before he throws.  With MUC's o-line, that is easier said than done.

I'll hold out hope for now that Cap can get it done.  Like cufan said, Cap has yet to give up a TD on Defense (the TD the Berg scored was on a fumble recovery).  Their Defense is very, very good.

While we're on the subject of sportsmanship and running up the score, here's a story from my son's football team a few years ago.

We're losing 56-0 with less than a minute left when the opposing coach calls his 3 time outs to force us to punt before the clock runs out.  With about 10 seconds left, he runs a double reverse to score a TD which makes the score 62-0 as the clock runs out.

The best part?  This was bantam football which is 7 and 8 year old kids.  Nice. sportsmanship.  Very nice indeed.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

JK: Cap's DBs will get a workout this weekend. It will be interesting to see if they can contain #4 Dawson. I actually would like to see Etta run the ball more but I doubt that will happen. The positive Etta can take out of this game is for their offense to score a TD.

Which, like I said, Cap has yet to allow.  I know that streak can't continue all season, but I will be rooting for it to continue another week.  Sorry KC.

Ok how about this story.  The week after we got beat 63-16 to start the season we won a game (the only one we would win that year).  The next week we played a team that beat the team that beat us 63-16.  On the first play of the game under the pile a friend of mine our team captain took a shot at the opposing players star player who's helmet came off.  he punched him in the face and he said it was a really good shot.  The guy looked at him and laughed.  We ended up losing 48-0 and they did the right thing and started subbing early in Q3.  But the way he recounted the story was priceless.  The rest of the day this guy just ate us  up.

HSCoach,
It sounds like your son's team was bad at football.   ;)
