While we're on the subject of sportsmanship and running up the score, here's a story from my son's football team a few years ago.

We're losing 56-0 with less than a minute left when the opposing coach calls his 3 time outs to force us to punt before the clock runs out.  With about 10 seconds left, he runs a double reverse to score a TD which makes the score 62-0 as the clock runs out.

The best part?  This was bantam football which is 7 and 8 year old kids.  Nice. sportsmanship.  Very nice indeed.

HSCoach,
It sounds like your son's team was bad at football.   ;)

That's the understatement of the year.  They were horrible.

k feds,
don't you think that marietta ought to hope to do more than "for their offense to score a TD"?  It sounds like there's a white flag waving awfully early,

Is there a defensive backfield in D3 that can cover Mount's receivers?

I think that Cap's DBs have the best chance of anyone on the schedule.  James Starks is all-OAC in his own right and he will likely draw responsibility for Garcon.  Matt Coleman, a senior with lots of experience is the other CB.  The problem with Mount's receivers, even against a good-to-great Cap defensive backfield is that you have to have safety help over the top, especially against Garcon.  This does two things: 1) opens up the running game, which is why Kmic has had huge days against us in the past and 2) opens up the underneath routes in the passing game.

The way you stop that is to get a good pass rush and get to Micheli before he throws.  With MUC's o-line, that is easier said than done.

I'll hold out hope for now that Cap can get it done.  Like cufan said, Cap has yet to give up a TD on Defense (the TD the Berg scored was on a fumble recovery).  Their Defense is very, very good.

It may be worth a drive to Columbus to find out.  What you may not know JK is that there is now a second receiver on the field, Cecil Shorts, who is as fast as or faster than Garcon.  Throw in Justin Wray who's no slow poke himself and it's a very tall order for any defensive backfield in D3 (with the possible exception of the Aztec Bowl team, which is not on the schedule at the present time.)   :)

Getting to Micheli may be the only answer, but as you pointed out, that in itself is problematic.
12-0 = 13

reality check

With all this talk of the Aztec Bowl team I'd just like to say that I would love to see MUC take on the Aztec backfield...

...if for no other reason than it would mean they'd be playing on Stagg Bowl weekend and maybe one of the other OAC schools would be represnting in Salem.  It's a long shot, but I'd take it.

I don't know about the whole backfield but building on last year's game, healthy Gunter vs. Garcon could be fun too.  And I'd love a sacking performance like this week vs. JCU when the Bears and Raiders meet up.

Be like most posters - blame on it the coach! ;D

Or was that you?  In which case, yeah, they were horrible! ;)

hscoach,

We had the same problem with getting our arses kicked (when I coached 8-9 year olds)....the only thing was most teams wanted to have a running clock when we had home games (for the 2nd half)...you see, I coached inner city kids and nobody wanted to stick around the part of town that the city of Covington had built a field.   If we had to play the whole game, we'd have gotten beat like we did on the "road"...

I agree.  That's one of the more interesting matchups in Ada next week.   The other one I'm looking forward to seeing is MUC's new DE's versus the ONU O-line, especially Millings.  He's a lightweight but very quick.

After sitting thru scrimmages with Averett, Otterbein, Muskingum and Heidelberg this week, I can't wait for Week 5!  Hopefully LK's been working the boys over in practice since the opening part of the schedule sure hasn't prepared them for Da Bears.

bw's defense really looked good last week this is rivalry week i think the 12 points is a bit much to give in this game as the underdog has always done well but i'm looking for a one touchdown win. one week at a time!

Capital is playing really well.  Assmann has settled in, the D hasn't given up a TD and hopefully Alexander is healthy for the tough stretch in Oct-Nov.

My question is this....where would MU 2nd team or JV team finish in the OAC?

cufan interesting if you ranked capital from 1 to 10 with 10 being the best how would you rank last years team and where would you put this years team? thanks

Regarding the subject of sportsmanship. Who do you think displayed the MOST sportsmanship? The Otterbein cheerleaders who cheered their hearts out with the chant "LETS GO O!" whilst the MUC offense had the ball......Or the MUC fans who tried to discreetly enlighten them that their team was on defense? Evidently they thought the MUC fans were trying to mess with their minds, because they cheered even louder and longer.  Too bad that isnt going to make the highlight video. Oh well, they were adorable anyways. :D ;D :o ::) :P

There might be a few DB's who can handle our receivers but the question may well be...can anyone handle the backfield of Kmic and Morring? These two guys are a headache for any DC.

Presto:  As the only BW fan we have in here since the departure of BWdad, I'm surprised you don't have more faith in BW covering.  Outside of the rivalry aspect, is there something concrete (and I don't mean BW's field) that makes you feel that way?  Maybe you should drink some of the Kool Aid that Coach Logan fed to Kcreds in the pre-season;D

Or perhaps they were cheering for their school which happens to start with the letter O... I don't know one way or another but it seems feasible to me.
