this may be the best defense Mount has put out there yet.

Thanks, I wondered when folks would stop talking about Kmic and Garcon for a minute and realize the REAL attraction at Mount this year is the Defense. While I realize that today's kids over use the term awesome, this year's defense is awesome.

Muskie - funny you should mention that.......I just put a screen in last night at practice.  Now if I can just make our lineman understand they have to at least hit their guys ONCE before letting them through!   :-\  Of course, they rarely do that when it's NOT a screen.   ;D

Who's your go-to receiver in the absence of Blake and Alexander?  I'll be interested to see who has a better day in the air Saturday.  Gunter should be able to shut down Cap's #1 as well or better than Cap's secondary because of the injuries in my opinion.  I'd like to see ONU utilize FR Michael Busch more than just as a returner.  He brings good size and speed to the mix as I understand it.
OAC Champs: 1942 (one title ties us with Ohio State)
OAC Runners-Up: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1982, 1941 (Stupid Mount Union!)
MOL Champs: 1952, 1950

Mr. Ypsi

Reason #607 why MUC is the beast: their punter is likely to end up leading the nation (if only he had the minimum number of punts)!  First game: 2 punts for a 23 yd average - weak!  Second game: no punts.  Third game: 1 punt for 46 yds.  Fourth game: no punts.  Fifth game: 2 punts for a 52 yd average.  The national leader (minimum 3.6 punts per game) sits at 43.2 yds per punt!

2 questions:

How can LK possibly even recruit a punter?  That's got to be the loneliest job since the Maytag repairman.

Be honest now - how many of you even realized that Mount HAD a punter? :o

I too think ONU will be a good test for Capital.

I'm not sold on the Cap back-up qb (although it sounds like he did well against JCU), but can become a believer if he is stellar against ONU.

Running game is still not where it needs to be.  I've seen Merritt at running back and Matt is not yet a Dave.

Wide receivers without Alexander are missing a key link.

I am sold on the defense...expect them to be a better test for MUC than ONU's defense was last week.  It's never apples to apples, but this Saturday, I'd expect ONU's offense to perform better than the week before...so just because ONU scores or gains positve yards, I will still believe that Cap's D will be MUC's biggest challenge in the OAC.

You know, RC, with the offense they run, they don't even really have to have a go-to receiver.  It never hurts to have a guy like Howes or Alexander or Blake, but with all the 3 and 4 WR sets, they can spread the ball around and find out who the go to guy is for that game.  I think the best of the remaining WRs is Kevin Brackman (#17, 6-2, 220lb, Sr.), then maybe Ryan Gunnarson (#86, 6-2, 165, Fr.).  Last week vs. JCU, Bartholomew threw it to 9 different receivers.  I expect more of the same with all the injuries.

He may not need to be stellar.

What is worse than a guy making a mistake (I hope) in selecting Wilmington 24th on the AFCA poll is the fact that the guy picking Mary Hardin-Baylor (and no its not LK) has Mount Union 5th on his ballot.  995 points for MTU, I have that right, right?

I mean how can a guy in week five, with the ever changing top of the poll, still think Mount is only fifth best? I have no problem with Mount not being somone's first team, matter of fact I'm surprised two or three or four different teams don't receive first place votes in D3 ball, especially early in the year.  But 5th?

Pat (or anyone else really)

Can you tell me what the purpose of a poll in D3 football is? Clue me in to who votes, why they get a vote and what it means. I haev always wondered this. Does it have any influence on who gets into the tournament?

The purpose of a poll in Division III football is just like any other national poll in any sport other than "Division I-A" football -- to give a relative measure of teams. It doesn't have any impact on playoff selections.

More information about the D3football.com Top 25 poll can be found here:

I don't maintain a list of the AFCA's voters.

You may want to add Ancona (TE) in the mix as well.....this weeks game will be who's qb will be able to withstand constant pressure!!

It's like the Ol' Ball Coach always voting Duke in his football top 25.  Some votes are anti-votes by people who don't like polls.
