Re: MUC and penalties

Through 9 games Mount has 65 penalties for 679 yards.

2006 96 for 944 in the regular season - 132 for 1303 including playoffs
2005 76 for 670 in the regular season - 114 for 982 including playoffs
2004 68 for 603 in the regular season - 77 for 682 including playoffs
2003 46 for 427 in the regular season - 65 for 573 including playoffs
2002 65 for 536 in the regular season - 92 for 775 including playoffs
2001 61 for 500 in the regular season - 87 for 715 including playoffs
2000 65 for 575 in the regular season - 89 for 818 including playoffs

The Raiders sure don't look like they get any better in the playoffs when it comes to penalties by the numbers.

Trends???  The penalties just keep on coming.  And they're getting to be bigger chunks of yardage.  This may be the first year they average over 10 yards per penalty.  MUC has already surrendered 18 penalties resulting in opponents' first downs.  If they give up three more, they set another new record for the program.

The Purple Raiders probably won't give up 1300+ like 2006 even if they get to the Stagg but if they continue to give up their per game average and get to the Stagg, they would amass about 105 penalties for 1130 yards.

The 2007 Mount Union defense is amazing but consider this: The Purple Raiders have only given up 157 yards rushing on the year but have given up over 4 times as many yards via penalty.

Just some food for thought...

The only year that looks really bad is 2006 with 96 for 944 yards in 10 games.  Most of the other years are pretty similar, except for 2003 with only 46 for 427.

I waffle quite a bit about the penalty stuff between being upset by it and not really caring.  The one thing that I hate to see is the late hit/unsportsman like conduct penalties, of which those haven't been a big problem recently.  Penalties like holding, pass interference, face mask, etc can often be signs of aggressive play.  Hard to get a pass interference penalty when you're sitting in a soft zone with a 10 yard cushion.
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

In case anyone was wondering, I wasn't at the game, and don't have much to say.  I'm starting to wonder if JCU is going to continuously be in rebuilding mode...good enough to go 6-4, 7-3, but not good enough to challenge the upper third of the OAC.   ???

Pat,

Are you announcing the DIII playoff bracket?  Is it going to be on TV and what day and time is the bracket going to be announced?

Walsh?  Your kidding right?

It would probably be a better game if Mount played Boston College rather than Walsh.  There is NO ONE who has any credibility at Walsh EVER saying anything about being competitive with Mount.  I know....I live about 1/2 mile from their campus, and talk to two of the coaches and a few of their players through various avenues here in North Canton.  The North Canton community as a whole looks at Mount as being one of their own...probably MORE than they hold any Walsh team.

I truly have never heard or witnessed the "arrogance factor" from the Walsh contingent.  Geeesh....Malone cleaned their clock this year.

Haha...this year you're probably right about BC being a better game than Walsh.  I don't think I did a good job of clarifying my point in my initial post.  When I said I wanted them to play Walsh for selfish reasons I basically wanted them to play to quiet my friends that played at Walsh.  I lived in N. Canton the first 25 years of my life so as a result had friends and acquaintances play for Walsh.  It was these people that I know personally that I was referring to.  It was certainly not my intention to paint the current Walsh players or staff as arrogant (how could they be at 4-6?).  I apologize if that's how it came across.

;D   DA.....we all have friends like that!

I think what Walsh has done to their campus with the improvements, building additions, and just the overall growth is quite impressive.  Their president came from the private sector and really knows how to build and drive a business/college.

On another note......I wonder if KCreds' kid decided that the "grass was greener" at some other school?

Kcreds!  You coming to OAC mecca this week?   ;D

With the both OAC and CCIW second place teams having 2 losses, what's your opinon on which teams fill out the North Region playoff spots?  Last season saw the OAC and CCIW each send 2 teams to the playoffs, but it doesn't look like that will be the case in '07.  Does Mt St Joe make it at 9-1 over 8-2 Capital or NCC?  Do we see someone from another region shipped over (Waynesburg 9-1 in the South) to fill out our bracket?  Sure seems that way.

NCC and Cap are both better teams than MSJ, but I think 9-1 wins the bid.  Waynesburg?  Yea, I'd like to see them visit Mount for a good butt kicking.

Waynesburg, IMO, would be competitive for most any teams not named Mount Union this year.

Their freshman RB is pretty good.

Its one of those wide open years for "the race for 2nd place in the North Region" (playoffs)....

my alma mater hopes to do away with MSJ's playoff chances this weekend in the Bridge Bowl.

The committee has them set as though MSJ is the #1 pool C in the north. Anyone with their eyes open knows the OAC #2 should be treated as a 1-loss team. Dean Paul is on the North Region committee and Norm Eash from IWU is the co-chair. They both should know better. Good chance MSJ could get beat this weekend against Thomas More.

Capital is clearly the best Pool C team from the north. I would put NCC second if they finish 8-2. their losses are to wheaton and WashU. I don't think any 2 loss team has much of a chance with so many 1 loss teams out there though.

I am just hoping Cap can generate enough offense vs BW to stay in the NCAA discussion.

I thought Waynesburg lost again last weekend?  Regardless, I would like to see Heller play.  I guess I have plenty of time to do that if he's only a freshman.  The return of Rick Shepas to Stark County would only add to the interest for me.

If all holds this week in the North we will have:

MUC
Wabash
Case
Franklin
Wheaton
MSJ
Concordia Wisc
Hope/MIAA 4 headed sacrificial lamb

You could play the franklin/wheaton game at wheaton. but this scenario puts that winner in alliance in round 2 and wabash a likely round 3 game for the purple giant eaters.

Saints Fan:  Don't let us Capital guys down this weekend  :D

Gotta hope Cap takes care of business against the flaming pile and root hard for Thomas More.

I hope Cap gets in, and think they SHOULD, but it wouldn't kill me if they didn't this year.  The defense definitely deserves it, but the offense is really struggling.  Like everyone said, I don't want them to pull a BW if they do get in, and, with they way they are playing right now, they just might.

Great to see ESPN coming to a Division 3 School.. should be a great atmosphere. A little bummed out that it is not at Mount Union, because I think that would have been a pretty cool thing for them to do, and even though its not a rival game, the shutout streak is still impressive. Maybe during the playoffs... or there is always next year!
