Although I consider Mount Union to be the premier team in D III, I do not agree that that last two minutes of the Mt Union game would have added much of anything to Hughes' development.

Now, if Mount could send the Pioneers some lineman, running backs, linebackers and defensive backs....that would add to Marietta's development.

Marietta got the ball back with one minute remaining.  Ran two running plays to a senior who doubled his entire year with those two carries and tried to pass it to him on the other play.

After Jorris' last pass late in the fourth quarter, Vrable threw for 71 yards on the following drive.  This kind of thinking that the radio announcers are better football minds than an OAC coach may have something to do with the vast amount of success the Kehres regime has achieved.   ;)

That's the drive I was thinking should have been the backup's drive.  Not the one with seconds left.

I hardly think one drive would have made the difference between well, anything and anything. I think a kid that's given so much to a program deserves the ball at the end of his career.

As for what kind of thinking makes Marietta Marietta, Marietta does just fine at several other sports. Should we have a hoity-toity attitude about how other schools do in those?

Ric

I think one drive in one game wouldn't make much of a difference. But that was the theme the entire year. How many passes were thrown from someone not named Vrable? We suspected Marietta would pay for that thinking in '07 and they did. When one guy is 75% of your offense and he takes 99% of the snaps that doesn't allow for anyone to be remotely ready to step in the following year. Why are we even debating this?

Ric

As far as radio announcers knowing more than OAC coaches, I hope we all know that is not serious.  But I will comment on two things I've seen in the last few years. My 14-year old has more offensive imagination than the last Muskingum coach, no disrespect to him, he is a great guy and is very well respected.

Maybe worse was at Wilmington a few years back when they ran the same play 11 times were they had that one really talented receiver from the city of Wilmington that they just snapped the ball, had him drop back five yards, pitched it to him, hoped he could get around two DB's by himself, and be off and running. Any defensive coach that has been around for just one game would have had that one figured out after the third time. That was a joke.

Because it is February and there's nothing else to do >:(
I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Statistics are like bikinis; what they reveal is interesting, what they hide is essential.

As a native of Phoenix, getting mentioned in the same blurb as Boris Diaw of the Suns is not a desireable scenario for Pierre.

Mount fans:

Any truth to the rumor that you guys might land a hot recruit from Florida named Phillipe Maitre'De?

The fallacy in your argument is the assumption that if someone had played that 07 would have gone better for Marietta. There's no evidence to suggest that's the case.

I had heard that the new recruit's name was Pete Waiter

12:35 p.m. - Mount Union wide receiver Pierre Garcon said point blank that he thinks he will get a shot with an NFL team as a return specialist before he does as a wide receiver. Coming out of a Division III school, he said, "I'm blessed to be here." He believes his versatility on special teams will be critical to his chances of making a team.

Nice to see he got a shot to go to Indy & show his stuff.  Hopefully he will impress the right people.

KS,

Thanks for the link.  Not a surprise given the location, but still, their actions are ridiculous and should be condemned.  I am considering my words for a possible note to them.

I have forwarded to everyone I work with, most of whom, like me, are in the service and Veterans of the War on Terror either in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I know there are several on this board who are either currently in the service, recently separated from the service, or Vietnam Vets (like runyr and seventies) who will likely take as much offense to this as I did.

How about trying common sense. Do I need to tell you that practice and repetition makes you better? There is no way to simulate actual game experience. Would it have shown in the win/loss column? It couldn't have hurt.

My boss said in response to the article that the Station Commander should have executed a pre-emptive strike and closed the station when trouble started brewing by declaring that "there is no one in Berkley worthy of serving our country."

This is the email I sent to the Mayor and the council members who voted for the resolution.  I used the VFW CINC's description of the resolution in quotes a few times.  I know George Lisicki personally, and I know that he is livid about this.

Dear Mayor Bates;

I am writing to express my extreme displeasure at the "Outrageous and Idiotic" resolution you passed trying to railroad the Marine Corp recruiters out of town.  I hope that you and your misguided city council realize that without people like these Marines and the young men they are recruiting you may not have the freedom to pass such "Outrageous and Idiotic" resolutions.  I am extremely happy that the United States Government threatened to pull federal funding from your city.

I agree with an Americans right to protest and served my country in the US Navy to defend that right.  I disagree with a city taking the stand that military recruiters need to be removed.  By trying to force the Marine recruiters from your city you are weakening our country even further.  Whether you like it or not the Marine recruiters are doing a necessary job and I can speak from personal experience that military recruiters basically tell the truth when trying to sign a kid up.

What really makes me angry is you and your council members will be the first to come running to Uncle Sugar when the terrorists attack your town asking for protection.   I personally feel that you and the majority of your council need to resign and allow people to come into office that actually have the well being of the town, its citizens and the nation as their primary focus.

I also commend the three members of your council that did not vote for your "Outrageous and Idiotic" resolution.  They actually showed common sense.

What you and your council have done is as bad as what many people did to our troops when they returned from Vietnam.  I would not be surprised if you and your council were among the people spitting and insulting our troops as they came home.  Those troops back then and the troops now are doing what they are told to do, they do not want to fight but they will if they have to.  Whether you agree with the war or not, the young men and women serving in our armed forces deserve your support, not your harassment.  In the spirit of full disclosure, I will tell you that I do not agree with the war.  No soldier or sailor ever wants to go to war, but we do it because we are told to.

I hope that you will reconsider your stand and issue a formal apology to the Marine Recruiters, the Marine Corp and the United States of America for your despicable actions.

Sincerely,

Michael Dougherty

Major Jon K - All my best to you in your civilian life. Please know that your service is appreciated and I'm sure that you have touched the lives of thousands of young men and women in a positive way over your career. Hope to catch you at a Cap game in the future.
