For those of you around the Alliance area involved in High School Sports...

In case you missed it, my Dad officially retired from West Branch High School on Monday, June 30th.

38 years at one place.  Wow...

I don't think he knows what to do with himself.  He has called me twice this weekend.  I usually got about 2 calls a month from him...
JK, congratulations to your Dad.  All he has to do now is start another "career" doing something he loves.  And this time, he doesn't have to care as much about the pay.  ;)

I retired from Computer Management to become a teacher and coach. I obviously don't care much about the pay.

I know my dad didn't do it for the money either.  In fact, he told me that my salary now is more than he ever made as teacher/ coach or as Athletic Director.

My dad has many flaws (we all do, I suppose), but that was not one of them.  He loved that school.  Most notably, he was the head wrestling coach for 10 years and a Football assisstant for 15, but he also coached golf, baseball, and track one season when they needed a coach.  If the school had come to him and told him they had to cut girls cross country because they didn't have enough money, he probably would have given up his salary.  In fact, there was a time when WB went through a pay to play period because the tax levy had expired and the residents wouldn't approve a new one.  My dad was head wrestling coach at the time.  One of his kids, and not a really good one either, said he wasn't coming out becuase he couldn't afford it.  My dad payed for him to wrestle that year.

Anyway, those of you around the Alliance area, if you know who he is and bump into him, shake his hand and wish him luck.

IF you all can't tell that I am bored out here in El Paso without my family, here's proof:

I was digging through last year's OAC media guide, looking at multiple winners of post season honors.  Here are some things that stood out (I'm turning into a regular OAC historian):

Of the OAC Special awards:

There have been 11 multiple winners of the Gregory Award, and only one three time winner (RB Bill Cooper of Musky in 58-59-60).  Three each from MUC (OT Lewis- 05, 06; QB Borchert- 96, 97; and QB Ballard- 92, 93) and Musky (Cooper, RB Rick Harbold- 65-66; and T DeVilling- 65, 66) have won multiples.  None of the other multiple winners came from schools still in the OAC (1 from OWU, 1 from DEN, 1 from WOO, 2 from WITT)

[edited based on posts below]: There have been only 3 multiple winners of the Hoernemann Award for best DL, 2 from MUC- Matt Campbell in 01-02 and Mike Hallett in 92-93; and 1 from ONU- Jason Trusnik in 04 & 06.

Only 2 multiple winners of the Tressell Award for best DB: Kern from MUC in 01-02 and Corey Harper from Musky in 89-90

4 multiple winners of the Sherman award for best WR- 3 from MUC: Garcon (06-07), Marino (99-00), Knestrick (96-97).  The other was Ron Severance from OTT in 90-91

3 have won the Edwards for best LB multiple times- Chris Anderson (JCU- 95, 96), Rob Rogers (MUC- 93, 94), and Jim Clardy (BW- 91-92)

Before the Hoernemann, Tressell, and Edwards awards came into being, the OAC awarded a DPOY to lineman and DB.  There was only one multiple winner- Pete Primeau from BW in 81 & 82.

In terms of multiple time 1st team All Americans:
Best I can tell, the OAC has never had a three or four time 1st team All American, despite the multitude of AA teams out there.
As for 2 time 1st team AA's:
MUC has 12 (Kring-85,86; Ballard- 92,93; Weimer- 96,97; Borchert-96,97; Marino- 99,00; Gerber- 99,00; Kinniard- 02, 03; Kern- 01,02; Campbell- 01,02; Spisak- 03, 04; Lewis- 05, 06; & Garcon- 06, 07)
JCU has 3 (Arth- 01, 02; Fletcher- 96, 97; & Anderson- 95, 96)
ONU also has 3 (Jamal- 99, 00; Vagades- 98, 99; & LaVant King- 94, 95)
Cap has 1 (Ron Swearingin- 01, 03), in a surprise BW has only 1 (LB Kert Boedicker 84, 85), and OTT has 1 (Severance in 90 & 91)
Berg, Etta, Musky, and Wilma have never had a multiple first team AA in their time in the OAC

Multiple 1st Team All-OAC gets real interesting.  There are too many to name all of them, but I will give the highlights:
Prior to this season there was only ONE 4 time all-OAC I can find, and he is from OTT (K/P Jim Hoyle from 79-82).  BW Punter Kevin Soflkanics became only the second 4 timer this past season, earning 1st team from 04-07.
There are only 31 people who were all OAC 3 times (6 from BW, 3 from CAP, 1 from Berg, 2 from JCU, 2 from Etta and neither is a RB, 6 from MUC, 8 from Musky, 1 from ONU, 2 from OTT, and 0 from Wilma)
Total numbers from each school of at least 2 time all-oac (includes the 3 & 4 timers mentioned above):
BW- 41 (about 75% from before 1990)
Cap- 17 (suprisingly spread pretty evenly from 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's- but long stretches each decade of no multiple All-OAC's)
Berg- 17 (but only 1 since 00- and he was 99, 00, 01- their only 3 timer)
JCU- 11 (haven't been in the OAC for very long)
Etta- 14 (6 were RB's and the only player to earn all OAC on both sides of the ball: in 83 Phil Schmucker was a RB in 85 a LB)
MUC- 55 (more than half of the 55 are from the last 15 years)
Musky- 32 (all but 3 from more than 15 years ago)
ONU- 22 (all from pre 1985 and post 1991)
OTT- 18 (but only 3 since 00)
WIL- 5 (all from early in their time in the OAC)

There is your history lesson for the weekend.  Digest, let's talk...

That's a serious understatement.

From your summary, it reminds me exactly how good Musky was in the old days and contrasts how bad they are now.

And forty years from now someone will look back and say the same thing about the Raiders.

Great history lesson.  And yes, you're very, very, very bored to have put that all together.

One correction though: Jason Trusnik was another 2-time winner of the Hoerneman Award.  He won in 2004 (when he was D-III Defensive Player of the Year) and again in 2006 after missing most of 2005 with a broken foot.

Wow, thanks for that.  Interesting history.  As mentioned (hscoach, JK), Muskies were once great.  You can trace a legacy from the great Muskies of old to Mount Union today, from coaches Ed Sherman to Ken Wable to Larry Kehres.  It all starts with great coaches!  I salute all you coaches out there.

Either the guy writing that is smoking crack or he left off a "0" from the W&J ranking and really meant 20th.

You're right.  Sorry I missed it.  I guess it's because it wasn't consecutive years like the others.  Still wasn't hard to see though...

I edited the above for accuracy sake.

Thanks.

The Pride of Otterbein, Matt D'Orazio is headed back to the Arena Bowl.  This time he takes the Philadelphia Soul after tossing 8 TD's to 0 INT's in the semifinal game.  He already has one Arena Bowl title under his belt when he led the Chicago Rush to a title.  I might actually tune into game because of the OAC ties.  Best of luck to him.

Hilarious and great reply!  No slight intended towards W&J, however, I agree with you in questioning their being ranked No. @ ;D

Yes, good luck to D'Orazio in the AB Championship game.  That is incredible - one title already and a shot at another one.  A great plug/inspiration for all former DIII fb players.
