reality check

I found out on my way home from work that one of the carpoolers (who sits ten feet from my desk at work) is a Kenyon grad.  He said he played outside linebacker for the Lords in his years at Kenyon.  I barely acknowledged his statement about football and asked if he swam.  He laughed and said, "So you've heard of Kenyon."
OAC Champs: 1942 (one title ties us with Ohio State)
OAC Runners-Up: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1982, 1941 (Stupid Mount Union!)
MOL Champs: 1952, 1950

RC,
similar thing has happened to me while looking for a job.  I had a phone interview with a team out in Los Angeles, when I said that I went to Mount Union he said "Oh, Did you play football?  Haven't you guys won about 1000 games in a row?"

I find easily offended people rather offensive!

Reality,

Am I nuts or did I see that Football is coming back to New Haven in 2009?

Small but Slow

I was surprised Parkersburg, WV, was a top 20 Titletown finalist.  Not surprised Valdosta, GA won it though.  It's a decent size town that is really into its high school football team.  Georgians may be nearly as fanatical about their high school football as Texans.

I found the only Titletown nomination I could find for MUC. Here it is for those who couldn't or didn't want to look for it:

Alliance, OH = Titletown

Posted 3 months ago

The Titletown search needs to go no further than Alliance, Ohio, home of the 9 time D-III National Football Champion Mount Union Purple Raiders. This D-III powerhouse has won 9 national titles since 1993 including 2 "Three-Peats." The small liberal arts school has an enrollment of 2,300 and it located at the heart of the small city of Alliance. These Purple Raiders truely live in Titletown. In 15 games in the 2007 season, the Purple Raiders outscored their opponents 51.9 to 6.9 points per game. Their DEFENSE scored more points than all of their opponenents OFFENSE scored during the regular season. The star running back Nate Kmic carried the ball only 274 times for 1,750 yards and 38 TD's, while never seeing the 2nd half until the playoffs. NFL-Bound WR Pierre Garcon had 14 TD's without playing in the 2nd half.

Stats are Stats. But Rings don't lie. 9 National Championships in the last 15 years.

Mount Union Purple Raiders = National Titles
Alliance, OH = Titletown

You read right.  New Haven is reviving the football program.  They've got a staff in place and have recruited a number of student athletes to be on campus for the 08-09 school year in anticipation of the rebuilding effort.  They will be affiliated with a local conference (the NE10) which is what they should have done when I was there.  Their aspirations to be the Notre Dame of Division II and play a national independent schedule is what did them in.  They'll be playing teams in the Northeast instead of jetting all over the country.  Don't get me wrong.  One of the reasons I loved being their radio man for that season was the fact I got free trips to flying to Chicago (to play St. Joe's of IN), Seattle to play Eastern Washington and Knoxville to play Carson-Newman.  There was talk of a conference affiliation when I was there but there were sticking points with the administration regarding scholarships I believe.  I tried to stay out of it when I was there.  In participating as a member of the NE10, they'll be playing some good schools though like Bryant, CW Post and cross-town rival Southern Connecticut.

New Haven would be the ninth football team for the NE10.  CW Post has departed for the PSAC and Bryant for DIAA.

Alliance has more of a claim to Titletown than just Mount football. Mount Union track and cross country have been winning OAC titles since the early 1960's and are still at it. Heck Larry Kehres's first OAC championship was as swimming coach. But beyond Mount, Alliance had some great teams in the 50's and 60's including one voted State Title and a guy named Len Dawson. Teams that regularly whipped poor little Massilon
Same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

I couldn't remember where I read it, that's why I asked.  That's great for them.  I know you were, um, distraught when they decided to drop the axe a few years ago.

During the 1950s and 1960s Alliance High School played Massillon Washington High School in football 20 times and won 2 and tied one.

pradierguy

I didn't write it. I just posted it, and I agree with you. THe author chose to leave many other things out, but at least Alliance was nominated.

Anyone attend or hear stories of the mid-July gathering of former OAC - NCAC coaches that Yost and Van Wie helped organize?
