A couple of quick notes...Nate is sitting at 2165 yds so far and Beaver's record is 2455 yds in a season two years ago. That looks doable.

Also Dan Pugh's record of 35 TD's in a season should be close too.

Anyway just some FYI.
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

He's tied with Pugh already, if I understand correctly.

Due to the holiday I have not been able to post...so this one may take a minute. According to Ric's site Nate has 35 rushing TDs to date, and 36 total. I think this number may go up a bit in the next game or two, or three. I watched the Hobart game on STO and have a couple of thoughts.

First, Hobart played a great game and I do not want to take anything away from them. Solid effort all the way around. However, the game, while hard fought, was not as close as 42-7 indicates (sorry - but close by MUC fan standards). MUC shot themselves in the foot at least once in the 2nd quarter with penalties. While Hobart got the sack on 4th down - the penalties put them in that situation. Additionally, downing it on the 1 yard line at the end. The score should/could have been higher.

Second, the hit on Claycomb in the 4th (I think the 4th). It was helmet to helmet, but it did not look blatant, dirty or cheap. Should have been called. If the rule is going to be there - then call it. I have seen Mount get flagged for less (like the personal foul in the 2nd).

Third, Congrats to Nate Kmic. I can not say enough about his effort week in and week out. I agree that he and Justin Beaver are 2 of the best backs D3 has ever seen.

Finally, Mount needs to watch the penalties. They did not have many but they came at the wrong time. A personal foul inside Barts 20, and then a holding stalled the drive. Additionally, special teams may become an issue. Barts punter did a great job and exposed a gap. That 'outside the box' thinking is something other coaches may see on films and want to exploit.

Speaking of records is there one for most consecutive seasons with at least 500 points? If so, does Mount own it?

Hobart spread their punt team with four wide, which forced MUC to go out and cover them.  It seemed that they were in man-cover, since they turned their backs and ran with them down the field to set up return blocking.  As soon as the Bart punter got outside of contain (which was now a down lineman), he had clear sailing to run/throw.  I don't know whether that's how MUC covers all of their punts (man)......if so, it would be something to exploit.  However, when your 2nd leading rusher is your punter..... ;)

desertraider- I think LK would agree with you about the Raiders shooting themselves in the foot.  I believe he specifically mentioned two penalties in the second quarter in the article I read on the Beacon Journal website.
They should have practiced harder.

I just saw the article and I think he did agree as well.

''We had 10 significant possessions and twice we stopped ourselves with unsportsmanlike conduct penalties,'' Mount Union coach Larry Kehres said. ''That's just unacceptable. Veteran players doing stupid things like that is how you get in a position to not consistently move the football.''

I am sure that calling out the veteran players on those will help to eliminate them in the future. I had a former student at Mount who told me that making a stupid mistake was the worst feeling he had - because he knew LK did not miss it and would call him on it.

NCAA stats say Nate has 36 TDs, 35 rushing, 1 receiving.

First, let me say that Hobart played a fine game on Saturday and they should be congratulated on their play. I believe the Raider faithful have made sure to acknowledge this fact on this board since the final gun.

Though the game was "close" it would have been a 40+ point victory without Coach K's sportsmanship during the final 2 minutes.  Additionally, a big chunk of Hobart's statistical success came on 2 fake punts...with one leading to their lone touchdown drive.  Regarding those punts by Hobart...the one that rolled inside the 5 of MUC should never have happened as the punter danced around for :10 before punting...Uhhhhhh...that should have been an illegal lineman downfield penalty...because if you watch the replay the entire Hobart team was downfield at the time of the kick.

Hobart was unable to line-up against Mount on offense and play straight up football and eventually...stuff like the double pass and the other tricks looked a little desperate.

I'm not as concerned about our special teams as ...Mount nearly blocked a couple of those punts and normally we would have had Shorts back returning punts...but Kehres was playing it safe with Petruziello back there on Saturday.  I think we have lightning in a bottle available if we want it...I don't think we're ready to risk an injury right now however.

Question...

I had read leading up to the Hobart v MUC game that Hobart's coach felt it was extremely important to get ahead early...as his team was not built to come from behind.  With that being the case why did they chose to defer the choice until the second half...when they could have had the ball first to start the game?????

That does not compute.

Simple.....more faith in the defensive unit so hoping they could get a stop and get the offense fired up.  Of course..the kick out of bounds to start the game didn't help any.

The first "fake punt" was DEFINITELY not a fake, but a great reaction by the punter when he saw/felt that the punt was going to be blocked.

Cecil was coming off his foot/ankle injury (was fine most of the week), and being sick (fear of mono at one point) the past few weeks.  LK was definitely playing a bit cautious with the young man.  I would guess that things will pick up noticeably in the Cecil Shorts department this week.   ;D

I never thought about the illegal man downfield penalty.  You're right!

Also, I've said it numerous times, maybe not here though:  There aren't many teams that should defer to the second half against Mount Union.  If nothing else, you take the ball and hope you can punch them in the mouth quickly, then pull a Lee Corso and call a timeout to take a picture of the team in front of a scoreboard.

That was funny!
Unfortunately, I was at that game...and pulling for the purple and white.

S-sidekick:

You're correct.  The first one was simply a great play by Vincent.  The 2nd one was a good call and even better execution.  The last one should should have been blown up and then called for illegal man downfield.  Either way, it provided a good test mentally for Mount.
