Lastly, on the daily dose, I humbly apologize for the one poster talking junk.  I love my school and because I love it would never demean any other institution and think its bush league.  I probably should post it there, but am too lazy/busy to register there so it goes here since I wanted to post here after the game anyway.

Agreed.  There is a history with that poster on the boards.  Just a Hobart parent taking things too personally/being emotional about the end of his son's football career.

My son is only 2 so I don't have the same POV as that guy - maybe I'd feel the same way, maybe (hopefully) not?

Will be watching for the Cortland-MUC scores this weekend.  Good luck to both teams.

OMG ... Rutgers is going Purple Raiders on Louisville ... 42-0 at half.

RC, sorry for your loss.  Also lost my Dad in Nov, the day before OSU-UM in 2006.  The day after Bo.  We figured he wanted to get a good seat for The Game.

Hope you find some semblance of normalcy soon.

Cheers!

Brief mention in this week's SI of Nate Kmic breaking the d3 rushing record.

What I found even more interesting was a short article on mostly-forgotten UM qb Benny Friedman (even in Ann Arbor I dare say most people skip right from Fielding Yost's point-a-minute teams of 1901-1905 to Tom Harmon in the late forties).  As an NFL rookie (1928) he became the only man (before or since) to lead the league in both rushing and passing.  Tim Mara (owner of the NY Giants) was sufficiently imprssed that he bought the Detroit Wolverines franchise just to get Friedman's contract.  It worked: in 1929, Friedman had 20 TD passes (#2 had 6).  It was such a hit with fans that the NFL introduced the modern, sleeker football to facilitate passing.  No less than Red Grange has been quoted saying that Friedman would have been the greatest passer of all time with modern rules.  (Benny Friedman was posthumously inducted into the HoF in 2005.)

This may be old news to some, but I confess that despite being a Wolverine fanatic, I was barely aware of Benny's existence. :-[

RC My point, weak or not, is that with 175+ to pick from Mount doesn't have to start younger players like some schools in D3 with smaller rosters have to. Although beyond 17 these kids may not be growing much more, a couple of years of quality college coaching, weight training and conditioning tend to tilt the scales if your starting against a freshman for some small high school. I was recently comparing a photo of Johnny Josef from Mogadore as an avergae sized hs running back and 3 years later as monster defensive end for Mount Union. Young and dominant are seldom used in the same sentence in scholastic team sports. Age and experience are a luxury in D3.

My thought on conditioning came from the personal observation that Hobart had some 300+ pounders who were getting beat by 250 pounders from whose guts weren't hanging over their belts.

Sorry for your sad homecoming.

Ypsi -- Thanks for the history lesson.  Have been a Yost fan for a long time.  [comes with being a math/stats major]

Cuz afterall, the only reason there issports is to keep us statisticians happy, right?

As a retired stats instructor, thanks! ;D

Just for you:

Fielding Yost's record, 1901-05: 55-1-1 (outscored opponents 2,821-42 - bet even LK can't match that one! :D).

I may have over-stated the gap between Yost and Harmon, at least for the late 70s-80s crowd.  Some guy named Jerry Ford was a key player for the national champion Wolverines in 1932 and 1933, and the team MVP (when they won only 1 game) in 1934.  And, contrary to persistent rumor, he DID wear a helmet. :P

RC-Sorry about your loss.  I have three of my grandparents left, and am happy for them every single day.

Thank God my finals will be over by next week's game so I can head to Alliance. (woops...am I looking ahead!)  Haven't met any of you regular posters, but followed the boards while I played.

Here's to there being a next week!

Friedman was a Tarblooder from Cleveland, Ohio Glenville High School, recent Ohio HS champion team currently coached by Ted Ginn, Sr. (father of Ted Ginn, Jr.) and also alma mater of Heisman Trophy winner and Ohio Stater Troy Smith.  Cleveland has a high concentration (on a per capita of population basis) of natives in the Pro Football HOF but not nearly the concentration of Temple, Texas. Your task for today, students, is to specify the natives of Temple, who have been inducted into the Pro Football HOF. For extra credit specify the native Clevelanders in the Pro Football HOF.

Almost an A plus - Bobby Bell was born in NC and played HS football in,  I believe, Cleveland, NC. Incidentally, of the Cleveland, OH inductees one of them I coached and one of them I had as an uncle - not going to ask you to guess which ones.

My bad.  I did a search for "Cleveland" and forgot to look at the State listings.

The PFHOF has this website with the listings.

Bartman can join our friends in the NCAC with the "our school is better than your school" argument.

Don't you folks out east realize that all we care about is football?  When I was interviewing for jobs, people would say, "John Carroll is a great school, but you guys never beat Mount Union.  We're going in another direction with the position.  Thanks, loser."  Happens all the time around here.   ;D

I can't believe he was so offended that people in Alliance, Ohio had no idea where Hobart was (and he accuses THEM of being arrogant).  If JCU hadn't played them when I was a freshman, I would've had to look it up.  I'd hate to see what that guy would say if you tried to make small talk with him at a bar.
"So, where are you from?"
"WHY DON'T YOU DO A LITTLE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU TALK TO ME YOU ARROGANT JERK?"

Just heard from our OAC rep that Greg Micheli has been chosen by the NCAA as one of the TOP EIGHT athletes for the year--eight athletes chosen from all sports in all divisions and Greg lands one of the awards.

This is one of the highest collegiate athletic honors that can bestowed on anyone!!

CONGRATULATIONS GREG!!!!!
