Re; Oberlin,

Potsdam has better basketball (2 national titles, 5 final fours, elite 8 last year) , a great pep band, a 600 student nationally known music school (Crane - alma mater of Renee Fleming) and a choral tradition that is as good as any.

Westminster is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Rider University - a D-I school, so they probably don't count as a standalone school.

Bet you St. Olaf & Concordia in Minnesota, and Luther in Iowa would all argue with you re: choral tradition west of the Delaware.  They can all hold their own in that department.

When did Westminster get taken over by Rider, they were associated with Princeton several years ago when a couple of friends transferred there from NJCU.  I am basing my Oberlin Choir comment on personal listening.  They are better than many professional choirs and as good as many of the renowned international choirs.

Thanks to the music program at St Olaf College.  While traveling on Christmas Eve, I heard the St Olaf Christmas Festival performance via American Public Media.

It was as fine a performance as I have heard over the airways.  I can see why it is one lottery ticket to covet in the state of Minnesota.  It must be spectacular to hear in person.

I wish each of you a very Happy New Year, but thank St Olaf for the reverent hour we spent together that Christmas Eve afternoon. :)

I posted this on the MIAC board!  A really good choir!

I'd take Oberlin in a battle of the D-3 music schools!

Is this Classical, Jazz or overall competition.  I'd be willing to place money on NJCU or WPU in the Jazz competition.

Man, now we've reverted to choirs.  This is one step beyond the CCIW divergence to Soccer teams a while back.

In a musical/basketball combiation, I'll take Lawrence.  One of the best music schools in the country, a bit less pompous then Oberlin, and last time I checked was still the only team in the coutry undefeated....

Yep....LU wins

IWU's music school is VERY highly regarded; it is the alma mater of opera diva Dawn Peters among many others.  (And despite recent losses and close calls, its bball is usually not TOO shabby!)

The three best DIII music schools are Rochester (Eastman), Oberlin and Lawrence, hands down. There are a lot of other great music schools out there, and yes St. Olaf and Luther have great choirs and i'm sure there are a lot of good small jazz programs out there, but as far as all around music conservatories, Rochester, Oberlin and Lawrence (probably in that order, though it depends on the specific studio) far outrank any other DIII music schools.

Well seeing as they are conservatories they should be better schools.  The majority of D3 music schools are part of a liberal arts university or college.

Heeey! The Wheaton College music conservatory is pretty excellent. As someone who applied to the Lawrence music conservatory, but who passed over the Wheaton one because the requirements were more stringent, and who owns choir CDs from both schools (the LarryU one was sent to me for free) I am pretty confident that the Wheaton Conservatory is right up there with the best DIII music programs.

I'd quickly acknowledge that Eastman is by far the best... even if it's just because my mom, who attended there, would beat me if I didn't admit it!  :D

Well, my dad runs a great summer music camp in Stevens Point!  :D  He went to the Julliard School of Music and he's played with the big boys like James Walker with Free Flight and has also played at the annual National Flute Convention, among other things.  Me, I'm adopted and can't even play chopsticks on the piano.  ???  Stevens Point may not be the greatest DIII music school in the world, but there's one heck of a professor that works there! lol.
