Yeah, Sager, haven't you heard? Scientology is cool now.... oh wait; nevermind.

Despite the fact that Mary Baker Eddy and L. Ron Hubbard looked so much alike, Christian Science and Scientology are not the same thing.  Besides, I don't think Christian Science was ever trendy.

I suspect you knew that, based on the "nevermind," but there may be others who confuse these two concepts.

Yeah, that was why the joke was in there.  The funny thing is that they are quite different in beliefs and practices and yet are equally ostracized by society.  I think that is really why people have a hard time telling them apart, well that and the prominence of "science" in both of their names.

By the way, have you ever seen pictures?  Mary Baker Eddy bears a very troubling resemblence to a young L Ron Hubbard...very mannish.

Yes, but how readable were her science fiction novels?

Science & Health is quite a page turner.

Yeah, I don't think Hollywood stars could be Christian Scientists. How'd they get their plastic surgery done???

Um, I don't think there's anything technically wrong with plastic surgery, its just you know, necessary medical procedures that are a problem.

I don't want to sound like I'm making fun of the whole thing.  I'm not.  I don't necessarily believe the the validity of some of it.  I just don't want to get called intolerant or anything.  I think that probably goes for the rest of us here.

Ok, so now that we got the disclaimer out of the way: back to the (good natured and not in any way hateful) jokes.

Jean Harlow was a Christian Scientist.  There are conflicting reports, but my late professional associate had significant ties to the "Science" community.  He maintained that she was a Scientist.

I've checked out that adherents site; its borderline at best.  They list people whose parent's were adherents and like anyone who have ever mentioned going to church is listed in that denomination's page.

Although, Milton Berle is certainly a cool one to see for Eddy's crew.

Now, is this really a fair point of contrast - how readable were L Ron Hubbard's?!

I confess I have never had a desire to read one, but I have read that they were awful.

Perhaps her LACK of sci-fi novels was a greater contribution to literature than his novels were! ;)

OK, I have to admit, I've never read anything by L Ron Hubbard.  I went to the used book store the other day to pick up a copy of Dianetics.  I figured I'd check out what this Scientology craze was all about.  Do you know how long Dianetics is?  It's like 1200 pages?  No way am I going to devote that much time to finding out why Tom Cruise is nuts!

I did see Battlefield Earth though, which lived up to its billing in Entertainment Weekly (and this is an actual quote) "A million monkeys with a million typewriters in a million years would be hard-pressed to come up with the drivel that is Battlefield Earth."  However, it was so hideously bad and John Travolta was so grossely mis-cast that it was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

I read Battlefield Earth a long long time ago.  I thought it was ok, but then again anything to read is ok when you are stuck on a submarine submerged of the coast of the former Evil Empire for over ninety days.

What were you doing lurking under the Hudson River in Queens?

The hudson river doesn't run by Queens, the East river runs by Queens.  Besides no sub could dive in those rivers, too much pollution.

Whoops, my bad.  I actually meant in the Bronx as a reference to your statement about the Evil Empire.  But, I guess, even then its still the Harlem River, isn't it?  Man, it's been too long since I've been to New York.
